This video will show you how to replace worn out struts on your Toyota or Lexus (Camry, Avalon, ES300, Solara 97 - 03) passenger vehicle by transferring the springs and other components from the old strut to the new strut. Although you can purchase "Quick Struts" or "Complete Struts", if the original components (upper strut mount, bearing, spring, spring seat, bellow and bumper) on the worn strut(s) are in good shape, I prefer to keep and transfer the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts onto the new strut. I've experimented with "no name brand" struts with limited success. Although the majority of replacement parts come from China, I've found the quality, ride and longevity of name brand shock and strut manufacturers to be better. Japanese OEM struts are made by KYB and Tokico; European are Sachs, Bilstein and Koni; American are Gabriel and Monroe. Everything else, IMHO, is a crap shoot.
Signs of worn our struts; loss of down pressure resistance with little to no rebound pressure (nitrogen gas loss). Testing the down pressure resistance can be done by rocking up and down on the front bumper of your car. If the car goes down too easily, the strut is pretty much gone or on its way out. Rebound pressure cannot be detected since the strut spring is the main component that pulls up on the strut stem. Rattling noise over small bumps can be caused by worn upper strut mounts, sway / stabilizer bar links and bushings.
The failure on my struts was rather unusual. The down pressure resistance was too high but there was no internal gas left for rebound pressure. Although the car did not lean on moderate speed turns, driving the car over uneven surfaces felt noticeably uncomfortable like riding over rocks.
Recommended tools to perform this replacement:
1. Powered impact driver with metric impact sockets
2. Pair or quality spring compressors with safety pins
3. 3/8" Hex sockets for sway / stabilizer bar nut removal.
4. Metric box wrenches

Watched hundreds of videos on “how to” It was a mistery to me what keeps the strut stem from rotating while you put the nut. Found out that it’s a upper support plate’s grooves. Thanks for sharing

WOw bro, Detailed instructions!! would be same for 2013 Lex ES350 ? HOw many mm are the bolts for the knuckle ?

Thanks! Only additional thing that needs disconnecting on the ES350 is the ABS wire bracket whose mounting point is shared with the brake line bracket on the strut. The knuckle bolts are 22 mm if my memory is correct.

Wow Thanks for posting this.. last time I changed the struts on my ES 350, I was afraid of the spring compression and took it to a garage for them to change the springs out. Do you think having three spring compressor does the trick?

Sure ... makes the job easier and safer in my opinion. I've gone up to 4 compressors. Get quality compressors though.

I've done many of these replacements over the years without incident. The key to making the job go easy is to use quality spring compressors. Made a huge mistake using the cheapo Harbor Freight jobs. Kept constantly slipping off!

Would you say that if the shaft of the strut is above the locking nut, it is aligned with the groove? The reason I ask is because I had a mechanic put mine together and now I am getting clunking noises coming from the strut mount area when I bounce the car or go over bumps. I am trying to determine if my brand new strut mount went bad or the mechanic put it together wrong. I am also going to try and tighten it more now..
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro Год назад
If reassembled properly the notch in the upper strut mount should line up with the threaded portion of the shaft. If not, could cause noise. Most common noise problem is a worn upper strut mount.

which strut is gas and which one is oil? or are they all gas or oil,please. Which one is better?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 года назад
All modern struts and shocks are gas and oil. Gas pushes up the strut stem ... Oil dampens the compression with the gas.

Is that brand Gabriel better than KYB? I want to do the front struts on my car and what are the shopping around now for a decent brand
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 4 года назад
KYB is the best you'll get to OEM quality. The Gabriel struts gives you a little bit more of plush feel. Monroe OE struts is a good compromise between the KYB & Gabriel.

@@hardlymovingpro alright so maybe I'll go with the kyb. I put on a pair of sensen shocks and now I hear creaking noises coming from my front end. So now I know to go with a better name brand! Lol
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 4 года назад
That's hysterical! The pair I replaced on my Camry were also Sensen's and yes, they were making that creaking noise. Also, the suspension felt like driving over big rocks. The Sensen struts failed by getting too stiff on the compression stroke and there was no gas for the rebound. They were always stiff from the get go. I got around 60K miles out of them. KYB and Sachs are the best but didn't want to put on expensive struts on a 20 year old car. The Gabriel's I got were on rockauto.com as a blow out sale. $10 a strut! So far, so good. The ride is smooth.

Most of the "Quick Strut" assemblies on the market are cheap made in China stuff. For a high quality strut and components you will usually have to put it together yourself on most cars. I have compressed a dozen or more strut springs with portable spring compressors like used in this video. It can be done safely.

Quick question so I trust your answer above anybody ha ha Ha ...is it true I will need a front wheel alignment after putting a simple quick strut? ..I'm saying no but some light to argue😂👹
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 года назад
Most of of the time ... No. It depends on how well the new strut lower mounting holes line up with the steering knuckle. The tighter the fit, the less likely the alignment going out.

If it doesn't have the eccentrics like most Toyotas then no need for a wheel alignment.
@davem5333

KEEP YOUR FACE AWAY FROM THE END OF THE STRUT ASSEMBLY WHEN REMOVING/REPLACING THE SPRING!!!!!!!!!! And you might as well replace the bellows as it isn't that expensive. And the final result will look much nicer and more competent.
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 4 года назад
Good advice! Also, from my past observations doing strut replacement on noisy struts, the source may be attributed to a broken upper strut mount. The strut may be fine but the mount or stabilizer link may be worn out. Also if the strut stem bumper is worn and not replaced, the new strut could prematurely wear out.
