There is a wire clip at each end of the shock that keep the shock from slipping off the ball. I found it MUCH easier to pop the shocks off if I removed the clip first. When you put the new shocks on, you definitely want to remove the clips before putting the new shocks on! Thanks for the video! It made the process much easier. The dealer wanted $500 to do it!
Thank you for this great guide video. Changed these yesterday and it took something like 90 minutes. Without your video it would take whole lot more time.
Your videos is always helpful and easy to understand. Im gonna need to replace mine soon. It looked like that junk yard volvo had the 2 extra seats in the trunk and the loading cover too. Hope you grab the cover as i know they arent that comman and difficult to find 👍
Hi, I'm just about to do mine now, this video is super helpful, also your video on the top engine mount replacement/torque bar bush. I'm new to volvos, I got a 99 v70 T5 a few months back, always wanted one growing up as a kid. I'm slowly doing bits and pieces to Try and bring it back to its former glory. Thanks
Thanks Robert! This is the second video I have used to repair my 1998 Volvo V70 XC. You were right about that top panel being fragile like glass. I forgot and did that one backwards from what you said and one of the screw mounts snapped off, But that's an easy fix! Small price to pay for never getting my head smacked by that tailgate again. It happened all the time when I was trying to unload grocery's.
Thank you Robert just done the rear door struts, and you where right that trim is like glass. It snapped both sides, but it fitted back and can hardly be noticed. My 850 t5 is a 1996 so suppose it’s going to happen. Thanks again buddy.
On my 2002 those Torx are T25. Also, I clamp ViceGrips onto the hatch brackets to keep the hatch up. Use a rag to keep from scratching the paint. Keep up the good work.
Awesome stuff. I really wish we didn’t have to risk breaking plastic just to access this stuff but hey, they weren’t counting on people driving these 30 years later.
My awesome 2003 XC70 just gave up the ghost. Wife crashed it and the air bags are deployed so they won't pay to fix it. Made it over 300,000 miles and planned to keep going to half a million. BUT! 3 days later and I have a "new" 2007 XC70 with 122K on it. So the adventure begins again. I have another one (2001) that has 270K so far so I'm half way to half a million lol. Thanks go Robert and his awesome videos. I'll be purchasing the 2003 from the insurance company. It's still a great car with lots of good parts.
Robert DIY thanks! And yes she walked away with a scratch on her hand where the airbag flap hit her but she's just fine. (Now that the adrenaline rush has worn off LOL). The other car didn't do so well. But no serious injuries. I'm impressed with the '07'. Nice clean car with a few items to work on but overall rides and drives like a new one.
Thanks for this couldn't of been easier. Also it's much easier if you can grab an extra pair of hands to hold the tailgate and cup of tea while you work.
My after market WAS brand shocks were a hair long, by loosening the bracket ( two 12mm I believe) holding the front end ( toward engine) it was fitted easily. Great video , Thanks !
I had a similar problem but found that by pushing the back door up a little further the shock went on easily. For me, the hardest part was getting the plastic caps off the rear trim without damaging the plastic. I used a very thin plastic card to get one of them off, but for the other I had to resort to a thin metal "pry bar" that is part of my cell-phone toolkit. Great video, thanks so much!
My support struts are dead. Just a tip for everyone else I use a hiking adjustable pole to hold the tailgate up, I suppose you could use one as well while you swap out the struts. just make sure it has a rubber tip at both ends so it won't slip.
I was cruising till I got to the part where they connect back on. There were no clips on the original struts, but they were in position (and leaking badly). Turns out getting the new ones to stay on when the hatch bounces open was a pain. I had to slowly work through how the clips work. I would have been grateful if that tidbit had been included. I fumbled and cussed for the better part of an hour.
@@RobertDIY Ha! No, just hope you'll maybe include that info for other folks. I assume you're always striving for perfection. I am very conscious of and grateful for the info you did include that didn't cost me a red cent. For anyone reading who's working on this, you'll want to do some dry runs threading the clip into the hole. It's designed so that the "clippy part" that grasps the stem is swung out away from the cup joint. Then the "sticky part" gets threaded up into the cup through the two holes, locking it onto the ball. Then you swing the clip onto the post till it grabs the stem.
Thanks for sharing. I rarely see those style. I have posted those instructions in another video. I don't always remix videos but I'm doing it more and more these days.
@@RobertDIY Love your vids. I turn to them first. As I wrote, the ones that came out of the Volvo didn't have clips, but they did have the holes for them. Don't know what that means.
@@RobertDIY my pleasure.....I have a 97 volvo v70 and it's great to find someone who gets straight to the issue...and deals with things that others dont. On a personal note I used to detail these at a volvo dealership here in the uk when they were brand new.....could never afford one back then... Happy Christmas!
I looked further into it and the car( 2004 V70 )has a known manufacturer or engineering defect where it causes the car to stall however in finding this information I have not yet come across any information other than what you have shared that points out what it could be that is causing it. Thank you.
Hi Robert, the thick plastic liner on the inside of the rear hatch has broken and it is causing a very annoying squeaking noise. Do you know where I could get a replacement plastic liner?
Hi Robert, This has been the year of repairing wagons for me. Somehow, i have four of them. 97 850awd manual, (cracked block). 2000 and 2003 V70's various. And 2000V70R lots of things. Question, Is there a good method for changing and adjusting a replacement tailgate. Switching the lettering on the gate, and removing the pin stripes/trim from 99- earlier doors and fenders. Thanks, Bill from Vancouver, Canada.
it looks like you completed this job by yourself without anyone or anything to support the tailgate hatch, but maye... your head? How difficult is it to do this job by yourself, using your head as a support?
How easy is it to replace the tailgate itself? The one I have has a bad wiring harness and the inside door handle just broke. Might be easier than feeding the harness.
Thank you for your help. I have a question regarding my 04 V70 wagon 2.4l non turbo randomly stalling while driving on the street (not Highway)and then it starts with no problem.I checked the code it read po420.Any suggestions no one has been able to address the issue with a solution. Thanks again for all your help tutorials.
It never stalls at a standstill only when driving never on the freeway with a highway usually at Surface Street speeds and when coming to a stop once it did
He's more complete than the previous video I watched: > .ipd Volvo Tailgate support shock replacement 850/70 series wagons . The previous one gave a what I consider a brief overview, skipping perhaps some important things, the light removal, and more important: that the trim piece clips are " fragile as glass" in this presenter's words. A very good caution unless you don't mind an unscheduled trip to the volvo dealer where they'll be glad to take probably 30 - 40$ for a new set of clips. - I'm not kidding, the retainers around your door locks are $12.80 ea! Plus, tax which is almost 10% on top of that where I live. Yahoo!? Best advice is however This, from me right here: Get rid of your volvo and never get another (nice handling, quality ride, super functional design, long roof-rack - all you want, even superb styling for a wagon, still, the repairs are just too absurd. Stuff you rarely see as repairs are commonplace, and expensive all around, ie, even on the common stuff)
LOL, the BRICKS are the cars that made a lasting good legacy. These P80 cars are a lot of work but it's still easy to fall in love with them if you get one in good shape.
