Reason for Beginners

I just got Reason 7.0, and I'm utterly blown away by it, by its sheer potential... it can be daunting, but I'm getting used to it every day and at recording stuff, using effects and such... Stellar product, bravo!!

As a music tech tutor I really like this and think I'll create some "Your first ten minutes in Reason drills" for the learners, because I tend to get bogged down in all the detail before moving on whereas this is a great example of skipping a few steps and just getting on with the making for starters. That Keyboard is the Nektar Panorama P4 and it's awesome. It integrates with Reason on a level so deep that you could literally turn off your monitor and use reason with out a mouse... just the controller. Way cool. We have an upgrade from 6.5.1 to 7 that is about 130 dollars US.

Great video, Carlo! This is even informative for Reason 8 which is a little different since the Browser has changed but it's very handy and I'll be sending this to my students. Hello to Jessie who is TIED UP with a bomb attached. LOL

We've done that. It's called track grouping or busing and we have that in Reason 7. Just select the mixer channels you want to group and personally I hit Command-G (the quick key). A group channel fader is created that is a little sub-mix of those channels similar to the master fader but with just the channels you want to group-control.

Much of ReCycle has been integrated into Reason 7. It now supports slicing audio files up, quantizing, stretching slices, and even bouncing out to Rex files for loading into Octorex.

I'm new to recording my own music. This is awesome and so easy to understand! Hopefully I will be able to get something done tomorrow. I'm basically a singer songwriter who just wants to get up and running. I just want to record some live demos to listen back to at the moment, so I can get to grips with the basics in using this software. I couldn't figure out how to get anything to work. I was really struggling, I wanted to just set up my vocals ready to record on one channel with some effects, and my guitar on another completely dry. I only got as far as getting sound. However I couldn't understand how to apply the echo delay on my vocals ready to record. I couldn't even get the delay to work! For three nights I've been upset and tearing my hair out. Constantly scouring RU-vid videos and getting nowhere. Because most of the videos are aimed at people who already have some sort of understanding of using recording software, and they are familiar with the language and terminology used, and are pretty swift using a computer. I'm not great with computers, I have very basic knowledge, as for recording software, I am learning from scratch. I basically need someone to show me step by step instructions, even as far as right click here etc.... This video is the best I've come across so far. I hope finally I can record something tomorrow. The only thing is that the teaching video is too fast for beginners such as myself. Or maybe you can point me to something that is at a much slower pace for complete beginners. ☺️

I have that keyboard. It really is all that and more. If you have 6.5.1, you don't need record 1.0. Record was for version 5, with 6.5 they integrated record into it so Reason 6.5 is all you need. Upgrade to version 7 if you want features like MIDI out (to some minute degree there's MIDI out) Parallel channels in the mixer, basic recycle features built in, and faders built into the rack for easy access.

This guy is great. Will we be getting more tutorials with him? And possibly more video tutorials?

It's in the Reason manual. Go to your OSX system prefs and keyboard settings to turn off the function keys. Or you could just use cmd+function keys to switch the Reason windows without changing system settings.

you might have to ask on a Novation support forum, it should recognize it easily though... If you use your Mininova like the keyboard in this video, it will merely work like any other simple keyboard MIDI controller (meaning all the effects and parameters will still be controlled by the Reason "instruments" or synths like Thor/Subtractor etc.). If you want to play the Mininova with it's own controls, you can use the integrated "External Instrument" rack device in Reason.

are there any license restrictions regarding the use of all the loops? e.g. if i create a song with the help of some loops, am i allowed to use the song in a commercial way?

Buenas tardes, una consulta. Porque esta tan mal echa la parte de distribución y asignación de canales midis en Reason 12? Por ejemplo tengo un alesis v25 y un vi61 con los 2 tengo el mismo problema. No se pueden separar los pads de las teclas por mas que las teclas están en el canal 1 y los pads en el canal 10. AYUDA POR FAVOR (todavía no conecte mi otro teclado que es un novation mk3 así que no se si tiene también el mismo problema)

you need to use .rx2 or you can use .wav .rx2 save chopped beats in the .wav? or they just try block your sound in any other DAW's?

Nice vid!!! It's official.... I do not know jack about creating beats. lol..... You did in 10 minutes what normally takes me 10 weeks. Well... I do spend alot more time auditioning beats and of course we all spend more time in writing songs and the list goes on.... Overall, still a wonderful presentation. By the way, please do a video/tutorial on laying chorus vocals in Reason.

can you do video for vocal editing, effects , recording , mastering and finalize . can reason support Antares autotunes vst plugin ? have problem in vocals in reason simple in Cubase your quick feedback is highly appreciated

Whoa, new Reason member here (coming from Cubase). Whenever I open up reason it makes RU-vid and Vimeo unuseable. The videos just show as static. Close reason and they work again? Any thoughts?

I tried to make the exact set up as you did but failed after discovering in Reason 7.1 did not have one of the instruments that you used. I have no problem with Dr Octo Rex and the loops but when I tried to add other instruments I could not get any sound ( like NN XT or Malstrom ). I cant figure out what I doing wrong. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks

I only have "Default Song: Empty Rack Built In Custom There is no "new song from template" selection in Reason 5 :/ The "empty + FX" is not there. What to do?

Just got Intro. So far I'm impressed by the great sounding and exhaustive factory sounds, but the UI really needs an update. Even you, you had to use a magnifier in your demo. Have mercy for our eyes.

One question that I have: Is there any chance that you'll allow a Rack Extension that can play VSTs? I spend hours carefully cataloging a huge collection of VSTs when I was using Reaper and FL Studio, and I'd love to be able to use them in my new favourite DAW without resorting to Rewire. I know you want to keep the quality up in the main program, but surely allowing an optional RE for people who want it couldn't hurt?
