Reasons to buy a RACE BOAT for a CRUISING HOME
A lot of people are curious as to why we chose a race boat for a family cruiser.
They've been asking us things like what it’s like to sail, whether we can manage it just the two of us, how she behaves on a passage, what the costs are like.
We don’t have all the answers as we haven’t had the boat that long, but in this video we want to share with you what we’ve learnt so far.
In the last video we talked about the 5 biggest disadvantages of choosing a race boat for a cruiser. In this video we will share with you what we think are the 5 biggest advantages.
We aren’t the first to turn a race boat into a cruiser and we won’t be the last. For example, the Palmer family turned an 80ft whitbread yacht into the beautiful cruiser called Camara that you check out on their RU-vid channel "Camara sailing". Then there’s the Duracell project which is Mike and his wife restoring the boat that American sailor Mike Plant raced in the first Vendee Globe in 1989. You can see more about them on their RU-vid channel "The Duracell Project".

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts, including sailing half way around the world from Europe to Fiji!
Last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa, which he raced in the 1990 and 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
You can find out more about the boat, us and our refit plans on our website www.sailingnv.com or follow us on

Wow, that's such a super aggressive, high performance boat for a cruiser, even more than Duracell, Camara, and the other examples of converted race boats I've seen. Just looking at the impressive hull form, low sleek freeboard, deep keel, and massive rigging, it's immediately obvious. Interesting.

The hull of Camara is a very different hull as you can see, it's a perfect compromise (in my opinion anyway) of a good sea worthy hull with speed in mind, but also ocean crossing safety with comfortable sailing attributes. Whereas yours is basically an 18 foot skiff hull on steroids, with all the skiff sailing attributes like slamming hard to windward for example. Camara also makes very good use of it's huge size by having the cockpit right back in the stern which allows the use of all that interior for comfortable living space. Although there'd be nothing stopping you from opening your boat up like that, but it would be a ton of work and cash. Also who knows what it would do to it's sailing dynamics being it wasn't designed for that
@SailingNV

Camara have done an amazing job, but we were looking for something different

@@SailingNV will do. A mate of mine put the idea in my head he’s done it a few times. He bought one of Chay Blythe’s British Steel race boats and converted it to a sailing school boat. He eventually sold it but it’s now a Challenge Wales Yacht which takes disadvantaged teens on sailing expeditions from Cardiff. It might be an avenue for you to look at as a Charity? He also bought Tracy Edwards Maiden with a view to doing the same but that fell through.

@@badgersupdate good to have some inspiring friends! Yes we’d definitely be very interested in doing something similar… do you think we could contact him to ask for some advice about how to set the whole charity thing up?

That spinnaker with the bull logo was from Bill Koch's maxi boat Matador. It dates from 1980!

Wow very cool to hear! It’s our favourite sail! It’s still strong, so great to hear this kind of history! Have you seen any photos with the boat with that sail? We’d love to see them
@baxternauset
@baxternauset 2 года назад
@@SailingNV Google Bill Koch / Matador / maxi and you should be able to get a lot of information. Bill had a number of IOR maxi boats called Matador before he got involved in the America's Cup. Nearly all of them used that Picasso artwork of the bull on their spinnakers. Hard to believe a 40 year old spinnaker is still good. Glad it is. Hate to think what a new one costs!!!!

I've always been into doing this but I was put off from other sailors as I've not met anyone in my travels that would recommend converting a race boat into a cruiser. You need alot of spare cash that's for sure. I just settled for a 1.35T, 10m by 5m performance catamaran and I've converted this to a minimalistic cruiser instead, it will need reinforcing on all joins of the fibreglass which is important as its an open core 5mm thick boat which can break easily especially if its used in hard conditions which it has been, hell things break if its safe on the hard or in a marina (joys of boat life). I agree it's more fun and alot faster than an ordinary cruising boat which in turn makes things safer and more interesting. I really like your boat NV great job with it hope you enjoy, fair winds.

I’m not sure when you guys will see this but I’ve thought about doing this after seeing your channel.I’m not sure if I want to follow through as I have to think about a commitment this big through more thoroughly.one of the things that was touched on was fixing a racing boat is expensive because of how it was created with some parts that you can’t get readily available compared to other sailing vessels that aren’t racers and how you have to be careful because of weight displacement and what you can take on including yourselves and the last thing I want to do is get one,start work,get it fixed up to the way I like and sink it by being a fool and putting too much on their lol what’s most alluring though is the amount of room they can offer almost like an open floor plan for a house or apartment.it makes it look easy to refit for a cruiser with all that space,still on the fence on this though .i enjoy your content on here though
@SailingNV
@SailingNV 2 года назад
Hey Nick thanks for the message, have you seen a race boat you’re interested in? Have owned boats before and done much sailing? Yeah there’s a bit more to think about for a race boat compared to a normal cruiser but also some nice rewards in the end! Keep us in the loop with your plans, we’re interested to hear more and good luck

Beautiful boat however almost a 14ft draft is way too much for a curiser , staying to far offshore to anchor is nuts in heavy waves . The keel should be changed out and engineered by a company like Mars Keels in Canada who are world known for doing such projects . I know someone who sent his keel there from Australia
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Hey Chris thanks for the connection. Unfortunately changing the keel isn’t in our budget for now, but maybe one day! For now we have to enjoy her how she is :)
