+BrooklyntoBrixton I believe a lot join just to join and say they belong to the particular group. Many who are apart don't even participate in the "community". These organizations were founded on much more genuine principals than what is displayed today.

FYI...Active members don't have the option of not participating in the community (which includes the campus community for undergrads). All active members participate (on some level) in accordance with our local and national service programs/projects and all chapters are audited for this activity; which means all chapters have to show "receipts." Exceptional chapters receive awards at regional and national conferences for their work.
