A foldaway trailer would be nice. But the one you have linked in your discription is literally 10x the price of a hitch mounted carrier. Also if your issue is with rust, then it's the SAME ISSUE for both trailer and hitch mounted carrier.
@codrinmicusan446

not really, the trailer has two wheels to hold the load of the bike, a hitch trailer is basically 200 odd kilos dangling off the back of your frame, i'd feel significantly safer with a rusty trailer hitch PULLING a trailer than CARRYING 200 KILOS

None of this makes sense. Stop giving advice when you don’t know what you are talking about. A hitch carrier is fine. Your reason that a hitch could fall out makes no sense. Then how does anyone tow anything? You have to make sure your vehicle is rated for that tongue weight and you are good to go. I carry my bike on a hitch carrier with no problem off road. The same problems you have with rusty frames being used for a hitch carrier also would apply to that same hitch hauling your motorcycle trailer. An unsafe hitch is dangerous no matter what it is loaded on it, carrier or trailer. Now ease of loading? Yes, trailers have that covered. But now we have the front wheel carriers that lift the front wheel of a bike and make it the trailer. Only a portion of the bike's weight is on the tow vehicle. It's secured in place, and is very stable if attached to the carrier correctly. It's a one person job and when you're done, remove it from the receiver and toss on a shelf. A very affordable and portable solution as an option to consider.

Been using a hitch carrier for years for my dirt bikes. Some places we end up its easier to have a carrier than a trailer. Even over rough terrain my bike does not move. Use 4 straps and a fork brace. If your vehicle is so rusty you dont trust a hitch carrier, then its too rusty for a trailer too.

@dangerdanadv1445
@dangerdanadv1445 3 года назад
While I think his argument is rather silly, you have to be pretty dense to think a trailer puts equivalent stress to a hitch carrier. With a 65lb hitch carrier and a 350 lb bike, you're looking at probably 450-500lbs of tongue weight (due to the leverage, the hitch carrier acts like a lever with a weight on it). With his trailer, which probably weighs about 350 lbs, holding that same 350lb bike, you're probably looking at 100-200 lbs of tongue weight. Maybe even less. They're just not equivalent.
@orange3203

I have used a hitch carrier for 11 years now. Traveled over four different states, back roads, rain/shine, etc. Far better that hauling/pulling a trailer. As an Engineer: You sound drunk or ridiculous. As a Regular Dude, I'm with you all the way. This video grabbed me because I actually was doing some Chemistry one time and ended up with a leftover bag of Road Salts that had a bunch of Calcium Acetate and was for Canadian Roads and I left it in the back of an un-used F150 for about one year. When I checked on it the entire bed of the interior was nothing but rust. The Fuel Tank turned to shit and I had to replace it with a layer of rust on the entire exterior of the Frame from front to back. Not cool for your eyes if you catch my meaning. CC man, the extra weight is a non issue. The tongue weight of a hitch carrier with a bike on it is no more than carrying a 4-5k trailer load. Trucks are literally designed to do double or even triple that.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 5 лет назад
The Curt class 3 hitch I installed on my SUV is only rated 350 lbs for the tongue weight. Also, I could not even install one of the hitch bolts to the frame because the thread on the frame had rusted through. Your hitch strength is only as good as the mounting on your frame and the integrity of your frame. A hitch is simply attached to your frame with bolts. No way in hell I would trust a hitch carrier on vehicles up north where salt is put on the road in the winter. Also, I know a few dudes who had their back window busted out from the handlebar slamming on the back window.
@shielasimpleton7346
@shielasimpleton7346 5 лет назад
CycleCruza The window thing for sure. I just meant, the weight is no problem if you have a real truck. If you were planning on using a hitch carrier, you wouldn’t get a class 3 hitch. They sometimes don’t make class 4s for smaller vehicles like suvs or perhaps your BO van, but again if you have a truck, it’s not really an issue. As for the rust tho, I mean I’ll still carry a 5k trailer with a truck with some rust on it, so long as its not structural, which would be some serious rust. But maybe that’s just me 🤷‍♀️

1:00. These are NOT meant for bikes above 250 pounds. MOST of those type of hitches that carry the full load of the bike ( as in not one of the tires is touching t he street while you're driving unlike my one wheeled hitch for the front wheel), will clearly state a max weight limit of 250 pounds or less...thus they are most often for DIRT bikes

I live in Ohio, and I've not had a rust issue. I spray Fluid Film twice a year on my undercarriage and frame, and wash off my chassis once a week during winter. If you have a problem with rust, a trailer is going to be just as dicey as a hitch carrier.

@CycleCruza 5 лет назад
If you think 2k is high, my trailer is actually a Kendon trailer knock-off, the same trailer made by Kendon costs $3200 new!! The reason people like me get a fold-up trailer is because it takes up little space and can be stored in the garage. I would trust it with 450# without a weight distribution hitch. I don't know that I would try to get a sport bike all the way up to the hitch, but a little dual-sport would be doable.

"Most" bikes are under 600 pounds wet and "most" of the big 3 brand pickups have a tongue rating at or over 1k lbs. Not an issue unless you're moving a full dressed HD. P.S. I have a '17 chevy 1500 moved an fz09 many times no issues at all. Also moved a 2006 Vmax 4 times about 100mi round trip each time. Never had an issue.

I have a 21 Tundra with a class 3 hitch, and a 1k rated hitch hauler custom welded together. My bike and hitch hauler together never exceed my tongue weight. Its been an awesome thing to have. You need to know the maximum tongue weight your vehicle can support. It's usually 10% of the maximum towing capacity. For truck based SUV like a Tahoe, Suburban or Expedition, you can probably carry a 600lb bike on a trailer safely. For most crossovers with a 50lb carrier and even 300lb dual sport you'd be close to maximum safe tongue weight. I am hesitant to use a hitch carrier with my crossover to carry a WR250R, although it would be much more convenient than a trailer.

This guy missed the biggest reason against a hitch mount motorcycle carrier which is torque multiplication. Normal hitches do not extend very far. A motorcycle carrier is further out from the vehicle mount point causing more rotational torque to be applied to the hitch. Example: A regular ball hitch that sticks out about 1ft is rated for 500lbs. (I know 1 foot is a bit much, but it makes math easy) If a motorcycle carrier is 1ft further out, the weight of the bike is doubled. So a 400lb bike would apply 800lbs to the hitch.

A bike carrier is no problem as long as you stay within TW rating. No different from towing a trailer. I've hauled my bike thousands of miles with the bike hauler (in Ohio) with no problems.
@CycleCruza

Weight that is placed on the hitch stresses the hitch much more than towing. The hitch is bolted up onto the frame and a hitch carrier with a bike is putting down force on the bolts as where a trailer pulls away not down, much less stress when towing (reason you can tow much more weight!) Your hitch is only as strong as the mounting to the frame. One of my hitch bolts could not even be installed because the frame bolt hole threads were rusted through. You are playing with fire if you live in ohio and drive on salted roads in the winter. My Curt class 3 hitch is starting rust and I've had it for only a couple years. I had to replace the original hitch ball with a stainless steel hitch ball because the original ball had rusted bad. You must not live in Ohio. lol You just drove thru ohio only? If you lived here you would know this is called the rust belt for a reason. lol

Hey CycleCruza, one thing those of us that live down South always do when we buy used cars is look at the frame to see how rusty it is. That rust is a result of all the salt and brine they use on the roads in wintertime to keep ice from forming. Down south, we don't really have to worry about that, so our vehicles always have good looking frames for much longer.

Make sure the hitch tongue weight rating is sufficient for you bike and find a hack to prevent the handlebar from bashing your back window which is quite common, Also, you need to make sure the tail lights are visible, if not add some dot tail lights on the carrier and re-locate the plate to avoid cops ticketing you.

Your bike could always fall off your trailer too if it isn’t strapped down correctly.
@Eastsidegeorgiaboy
@Eastsidegeorgiaboy 2 года назад
That happens because of improper tie down. People aren't tightening them down tight enough, nor in good locations. People forget that the suspension of the bike will compress while you're towing it. If not strapped down properly, it will lead to the bike moving a significant amount, enough to where it hits your back window or tailgate, or even possibly falls off the hitch carrier. You only need 2 straps. You can use more if that makes you feel better, but two is all you need. Get a fork saver in the color of your choosing, install over front wheel, and strap down nice and tight. Make sure you put the bike in gear at least. Putting it in gear keeps the bike from rolling around. That's all you need.

My 2014 jeep grand cherokee ecodiesel can tow 7200lbs. A proper weight distribution at full capacity is 10-15%, which is 720-1080lbs. I tow my Supra + Car Trailer + racing gear all the time which comes close to max capacity with the family loaded too. I'm pretty sure that my motorcycle hitch carrier which weighs like 75lbs + my dirt bike that weighs about 230lbs = 305lbs total is not dangerous or putting undue stress on my jeep. Since my jeep has the factory air suspension, I also don't need to "upgrade the rear springs" either since it stays perfectly level no matter how much weight I put on the back of it. My jeep at about 185,000 miles, 6 years old, and there's practically no rust. Obviously, there are motorcycles that weigh significantly more, and a tow hitch carrier isn't a good solution; it's all about perspective. Putting a blanket statement like "hitch carriers are dangerous" and making poor generalizations is just bad information.

My thoughts to this video? Rust proofing is an option, and I always spray my undercarriage when I wash my car in the winter (New England). I'm not crazy about hitch trailers because I feel they'll make the backend of the vehicle heavy and wallow, but in my case I'm thinking a small ADV or Supermoto.

I just bought one of these to haul around my 1985 xj700. It has a 600 lb capacity and the bike weighs maybe 480. The hitch I installed on my f250 has a 1000 lb toungue weight capacity so all in all I'm in spec. Now, if I had a nice bike I wouldnt use a hitch carrier either. At least not this one. My xj700 is a beater that already had scratches and dings. It's a bitch to load by yourself for probably any bike heavier than an average dirt bike. I've already broken the mirror off the first time I went to use it because I lost my balance. Again, beater bike, not really too concerned, especially since the bike is insured for more than it's worth. There are far superior hitch carrier designs out there, with a substantial price tag but it all depends on your investment in the bike. I've seen some custom made hitch carriers built so heavily it could handle two gold wings. It's just a matter of finding the proper application to match your needs.

@elpresidente8730
@elpresidente8730 2 года назад
That's not really a good argument against using hitch carriers as rust attacking your tow car would have the same outcome if it were a trailer attached. A better one is that a hitch carrier is subject to both vertical and horizontal forces and designed to take considerably more horizontal stress than vertical. When towing a trailer the predominant stresses are horizontal and peak during acceleration and braking while the vertical force (nose weight) remains fairly constant. A trailer hitch will typical be rated to about 300lbs or less nose weight but it really depends on the size. With a hitch mounted rack the horizontal forces are minimal but vertical stress is imparted by the weight of the bike, the carrier plus any acceleration in the vertical axis which would be caused by uneven road surfaces, ramps and pot holes. Bigger heavier bikes may exceed the rated nose weight before you even drive off, so it's worth checking the welds from time to time.

You're wrong on this one. A motorcycle isn't going to break your hitch off as even the heaviest bikes aren't going to break a 5,000lb hitch. Your frame would need to be practically destroyed in order for that to happen and by then your vehicle would be falling apart at every bump.

I appreciate the video but the only good thing you said was don't buy a cheap Chinese version hitch carrier. That little bit of rust is nothing on your Lexus. I live in British Columbia and we get roads salted quite a bit too in the winter but that reason for not getting a hitch carrier was not that smart Hahaha. I would recommend spending the money and buying a high quality one, especially if you are putting a naked bike, sport bike or mid size cruiser on the back. Put grip tape on the ones that have a smoothe ramp and main part where the bike will sit on carrier. After some research Black Widow has a aluminum one rated up to 400lbs (good for dirt bikes). They have an all steel one which is black powder coated and rated up to 600lb. Also, VersaHaul makes a pretty good looking carrier too with a smoothe ramp which would make loading a 450lb Ducati easier. If I decide to get one for my dirt bike and my Ducati it would be the VersaHaul. Gotta do more research though.
