I love the maturity and poetry of analysis within this superb video essay. I’m struck by the comparisons between James Dean’s and Marlon Brando’s presence and acting techniques. Dean’s upturned collar and use of the milk bottle on his injured brow remind me of the scene in On the Waterfront where Brando tried on Eve Marie Saint’s gloves. Its a fascinating piece of movie trivia that you unearthed with the origin of the live fast and die young quote from Nicholas Ray’s earlier film. The themes of misunderstood youth are still so relevant today. It’s eerie how the three stars of Rebel each died young, cementing the iconic status of this groundbreaking picture. Thank you for furthering my education and appreciation of this timeless classic. I feel like you’ve entered new territory with this gem. I hope you are buoyed by the praise that this essay receives and continue to wade out deeper into the giant ocean of film history.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. Those are some great observations as well. It would have been interesting to see how James Dean would have turned out had he lived as long as Brando. Glad you liked the video.

@@MovieBirthdays It would have been interesting to see if James Dean's acting career would have thrived in the 1960's like Paul Newman's and Steve McQueen's did or would it have struggled like Marlon Brando's did. It all would have come down to if there were any great parts for him and if he was versatile enough to play them. Marlon Brando rebounded with The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris and Apocolypse Now. Paul Newman was hitting home runs teaming with Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and also the Sting. James Dean's style of acting may have gone out of style by the mid to late 60's, even though there were enough imitators like Christopher Jones and Michael Parks. Also a number of younger intense actors were coming on the scene like Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty and Robert DeNiro.

@@jamest681 It’s part of the allure of James Dean, not knowing how things might have panned out for him. I think Paul Newman and Brando are great models for what might have been, I also wonder if he might have had a career as varied as one of his peers Dennis Hopper, that would have been an interesting turn of event. Thanks for the great comment.

This film had an analagous seminal place in cinematic history as say, Look Back in Anger had in theatre... You encapsulate in your review a mesmerising contextualisation of the complexity in the purveying of teenage angst and the real-life tragedy that befell the actors, underscored through-out by an atmospheric sound track. James Dean (along with Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo) carried off his part with real pathos and empathy despite the ever so slighty questionable physical age difference.

That was bloody good. Very nice edit on the Hopper. with the VO "we never got to see them age, their careers fade away." - knocked it out the park on this one!

Thanks a lot, this was an emotional one to put together, it has so many layers.

Gonna be honest I've never seen this film, something I now want to rectify after your analysis. Dean always reminds me of River Phoenix, another great actor who died before his time, shame.

You’ve got to see it, I think it still holds up and is worth seeing. It’s quite a moving movie and seems to resonate more as I get older, beyond the teen angst I think there’s some great themes around the angst of being an adult too, especially as a parent. Let me know what you think once you get around to seeing it.

@Remo Gatron That sounds like it was a cool experience. I’m a huge fan of the Mosquito Coast also, it’s a really interesting film.

Despite mispronouncing “Mineo” a dozen times, a very good analysis of Rebel Without a Cause, and a nice tribute to James Dean.

Very well done review. While I think it was groundbreaking at the time, I don't think it has held up well. Teens today wouldn't understand it just a different generation

The only Dean film I’ve seen and IMO he was awful. The scene when he breaks down is laughably OTT.

I’m guess the only thing that dates the movie is that it’s a melodrama which is a genre we don’t see much of these days. I think James Dean’s performance was in the same vein as Brando in Streetcar Named Desire, method actors getting deep into their characters and then unleashing big emotions. Needless to say things have become more naturalistic since then. 👍

@@MovieBirthdays If Dean hadn’t sadly passed on, then quite possibly he would have become a great actor. Problem I have with his performance is that he is crying... whilst at the sametime he might as well be looking into a mirror to see if his hair is in place.
