Most starters can be "rebuilt" in this way by simply replacing the contacts inside. Two years after this video I sold the truck and it was still starting perfectly. This is not a full starter rebuild, it is only a video of me replacing the starter contacts, which is all that needs to be done in this case.
The starter contact set is part number 28226-72010 and it fits most toyotas.

Just used your video as a guild to rebuilt my starter. Thanks! The contact on the right side was practically gone and the underside of the plunger thing had so much corrosion it looked like the top of a grimey fish tank! I can't believe the truck would at all let alone the 4/5 times it was giving me! Oh and for anyone wondering I have a 1986 4x2... and the complete job took me just under 3 hours. It's deffinitly doable for the avergae guy.

This video saved me $115!!!! I'm not a mechanic by no means. I'm the type of guy who sticks to what I'm a pro at and let mechanics work on my rides. However , I have heard that changing out a starter on a Toyota truck was pretty easy once you can get to it. I decided to give it a shot all prepared to take that starter up to the Auto parts store and trade it in and buy a new one for $155 with a $40 core return. Once I watched your video and seen what was most likely the problem with the dam thing, I took mine apart too. My seal was perfect it just had a dirty copper terminal inside from dust and grime. I didn't purchase any kit I just took mine apart just like you did in the video and I cleaned the hell out of the inside particularly the terminals and contacts. I put it all back in my truck and it crank the first try. I've been driving it around all night and shutting it off and starting it with no problem. It works perfectly now. This video opened my eyes to what was probably wrong and you saved me $115 and that's with me doing all the work. Thank you very much for this very important video you made. It's obvious to me now that most people return their old starter and buy a new one when all they really needed to do was clean out the dam thing!!! Thank you so much for the info!!

I think the reason you had to make modifications to your kit is because each post has its own kit. The kit you used (28226-72010) is actually for the post you didn't replace. Part# 28226-64370 is the kit for the battery side post/contact, comes with the paper piece, slightly different shaped contact, correct thickness nut, teardrop-shaped outer plastic piece (the piece you said broke on yours), and the post itself kinda flares out near the head which is why it seemed fused to the contact. Though, apparently it doesn't seem to matter which kit is used, as yours worked out fine. Just thought I'd post this up for anyone that wonders why 72010 doesn't seem to match the parts on the battery side. Good video, thanks for uploading it!

I ordered the contacts and plunger from EBay for only $13.95 and changed out the contacts and plunger. It was a pain to remove and reinstalled the starter, but my faithful 1999 4runner with over 200,000 miles on it started right up. Thanks for the great video and saving me a lot of money.

@@LegitRaceCraft I had trouble with the ratcheting device on the starter shaft in an '05 Camry. The grease was so thick that it would hold back the ratcheting pawls in cold weather, allowing the ratchet to slip. I was unable to access the pawls because the ratcheting device was stamped together, so I liberally oiled it with light lubricants, which I think diluted and flushed out some, if not most, of the heavy grease. Hopefully the resulting mixture will stay thin enough to allow the return springs to push the pawls into position even in the coldest weather.

Re-grease your contacts before putting them back in. It will lessen wear and prevent corrosion. Other than that good video (Maybe could use a bit less rambling but good information for the most part)

Why weren't all the parts replaced? The contacts on BOTH sides were needed to replaced, as well as the plunger.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 9 лет назад
777fuzzypeach I know, I wish the rebuild kit had come with the plunger also, but it didn't. Other kits I've gotten came with a new plunger. I guess those don't NEED to be replaced though because the truck is still starting fine over 2 years later.

Sounds like the contacts wear alot more than the Rotors, pinion gear, rectifiers, stators, regulators, bushings, bearings

Thanks! -Good thorough tutorial. I'm in Hawaii too... Now If I can just be sure of how to get to the bolts on my same year truck to get the starter off. Looks like they didn't exactly make it easy- did they... I can't even see the bolt/nut heads...:)

If you are doing this you need to replace both contacts and the plunger or you will just be doing this all over in a few months.

I used a torque wrench to tighten the copper stud nuts and ended up stripping the thread. I guess it was out of calibration or something

What engine was on the truck you did this on? I have one with a 22R-E and I want to make sure it will work on mine.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 9 лет назад
joeinvegas101 mine is the V6 3VZE. I have a video on removing it also. Most toyota starters I've seen can be rebuilt about the same way. Try to find a rebuild kit for your starter first, then go from there.

Is a new starter ever suggested vs the kit? Or can one just rebuild it once it fails and need to
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 9 лет назад
I've never seen one that couldn't be rebuilt. There are bearings in the starter motor itself that one day far from now will need replacing. Those didn't come in the kit, only the parts for the solenoid were needed.
@Black00XJ
@Black00XJ 9 лет назад
Coming from a Toyota Tech at a reputable dealer, a starter is always sold in place of a rebuild, the same reason as a parts store sells a starter in place of a rebuild, more $$. And the fact that rebuild kits don't sit on dealer shelves so that rebuilding it is not an option. The starter motor is all electrical and can be rebuilt but it takes time and patience.

You definitely don't want to do the click start too many times because as you said the injectors prime every time you hit the ignition and I fucked up my cataleytic converter on a 3rd gen pickup doing that too many times trying to squeeze more life out of it. (I was a starving college student at the time)
@TeeTafoya87
@TeeTafoya87 6 лет назад
Are you referring to the "click" sound from when you turn your key in ignition? Or are you referencing using the relay-jump to start your car?
@Raevenswood
@Raevenswood 6 лет назад
I'm referring to turning the ignition repeatedly to try and get the starter to turn over.
@drumbasher

I had to have my T100 towed home this morning, after clicking about 40 times. I hope I haven't ruined something.
@Raevenswood
@Raevenswood 6 лет назад
how did it go? I wouldn't worry unless you were constantly doing it to get the car started on a daily basis like I was. I would do it 30-40 times every day to get it to start for a couple weeks before it finally just wouldn't go anymore. thats how I flooded it and ruined my cat converter.

How long will the refurbished starter motor last?
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 4 года назад
I've rebuilt 3 of my own starters over the last 15 years(two different motorcycles and this truck), and all of them lasted until I sold the vehicle, so I'm not sure but they lasted at least 2 years from experience and should last well beyond that.

your rebuild kit ? or the starter? most older (all Ive seen) toyota starters do not have the o-rings. they added these later to help keep oil/water/etc out of the starter. just make sure the plastic isolaters are intact (not broken) when you put it back together.

Jay, I have an Acura 2004 TSX see link www.acurapartswarehouse.com/parts-list/2004-acura-tsx-4dr-tsx-navigation-ka5at/starter-motor-mitsuba. DELETE..THIS SPACE...html See fig on the right diagram # 14 can I rebuild this? Since I had it opened I wanted to replace the springs and the brush set have not had much luck finding a replacement. Was not very dirty on the inside and zero oil. Hmm now that I mention that perhaps that was the problem no lubrication on the friction parts. Anyway wanted to replace that item since I have so much time invested already. Thanks for posting sir, I did subscribe.

the link doesn't work, I just did a quick search. Ebay has a brush kit, couldn't find anything on amazon. Just do a search on 2004 tsx starter brush kit and you should find it.
