We are back to working on the 2017 GMC Terrain SLE AWD that should never have been a total loss. The biggest part of this build is the dog leg repair and we will knock this out in a couple hours then we can get the rest of the car ready for the painting gnomes. You always impress me with the extend that you go with your repairs. Honestly there are very few that would go to that extent to repair that damage. They would pull or hammer things out close and then bondo the rest and call it a day. With you it ends up as good as new, maybe even better. It is no wonder that you vehicles are sometimes sold before you even have the repair finished. 👍💯

I've been doing estimating, and it's amazing how much labor is involved in R&I (remove and re-install) and setting back things (wiring, carpeting, etc.) I just wrote a $7800+ estimate on an Equinox that took a B-pillar hit right above the rocker. Just over half the job is labor. We're replacing both doors, the pillar, and about 3/4 of the uniside (from mid-front door to the tail lights, sectioned through the rearmost side window and below the roof on the pillar). That uniside alone is booked at 22.5 hours. Each door gets about 5 in labor for parts swapping, hanging, and alignment, and another 2.5 each for paint. Then we drop the rear bumper, both taillights, remove all the inside trim on that side, the driver's seat, the left side (60%) rear seat, airbags, drop the headliner... I'm also expecting damage to the inner rocker, but I can't write that damage until we open it up and verify it. Either way, it's not a total. The car has only 1,286 miles on it.

I'm just completing estimator training and getting into CCC One estimating software and associated notes. This is aimed more at people who want to follow in Vehcor's footsteps (like me). From what I have seen, the proper GM sectioning procedure for the dogleg is to remove the entire quarter panel, sectioning it through the rear window below the roof. I would have to check notes on Monday as to whether the skin is high-strength steel (HSS) or not. Probably not as the skins are usually stitch-welded, and that requires more heating than HSS allows. If it's not, you can probably get away with this repair without compromising anything. I'm betting the wheel house is not HSS and can be sectioned anywhere. Generally, parts that are crushable are not HSS while the "roll cage" members will be. All the same, it's a tough call for skin metal and I don't know of a way to tell by looking. Mfr. specs will tell you or call your local dealer and ask. Good call on the inner parts though - those parts should be removed entire as ALL the rocker steel is HSS and should never be sectioned. I also noted your B-pillar replacement on this or another similar car was by the book. Anything less compromises structural integrity. Quick note of something I was alerted to two weeks ago - a new rule from Subaru says that any dents big enough to require quarter panel replacement that are within 100 mm (4 inches) of the roof is an automatic total. Note to self: Avoid Subaru from 2021 onward. The reasoning is that the roof will have to come off, and the labor involved makes the job expensive enough and compromises structure enough that the car would be considered unsafe. Dents can be filled, but any wrinkles, folds, or overlaps are a DNR. NOTE TO THE NOOBS: 1) There are parts of a car that may be boron steel. Those pieces are NOT repairable and must be replaced in their entirety. 2) HSS has restrictions on welding. Generally the metal outside the immediate weld area cannot be heated past 650 degrees F for more than 90 seconds (max) in two cycles in the same area without compromising the strength. Weld once and do it right. Don't heat it to shape it if you can help it. It can be hammered back to shape. Be sparing with the heat. 3) Unless you can find otherwise, assume that any frame member is HSS or Ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) and must be replaced whole. Front and rear frame rail ends are a possible exception and do have (generally) manufacturer-approved areas for sectioning. 4) Any frame rail that is kinked or bent is an automatic replacement, even if pulling straightens it. It has bent once. Its crushing strength is compromised and may fold up worse in a second accident. Vehcor has been very good about replacing crushed frames. Don't take chances. If in doubt, replace it whole. Link shows GM-specified lines for quarter sectioning. www.gmpartsonline.net/v-2013-gmc-terrain--denali--3-6l-v6-gas/body--quarter-panel-and-components
