We set out to build a classic Ford 460 on a rock bottom budget. From the junkyard to a fresh, nearly-new powerplant. It's a TV build full of tech tips and fun facts about the good ole' 460. It's a low-cash project for money-strapped gearheads.

Great teaching video. Thank you, fills in lots of gaps in how my dad used to refurbish, and slightly upgrade parts. Cheap was frequently the name of the game for him and he was not a teacher. Awesome thank you again!

Good luck finding a machine shop to clean an engine, plain the block, heads, and alight cam and crank journals and repolish the crank for 500 bucks

I thought he meant the heads cost $500 not all the other work included. Which would be about right for just the heads

@@bertgrau9246 exactly but he said the machinist did everything for about 500 bucks. no way. Clean, plane and magniflux heads maybe but they showed line honing the cam and crank too. They Definitely got the "say my name on tv" 50% off deal

Good torque. Probably be a decent truck engine.

Early lincoln heads would woke this motor up at over 500HP with the simple mods you guys did and it would have still been on a budget If anyone is ever reading this and looking to build a budget BBF 385 series always go for a C8VE, C9VE, D0VE and a D1VE they were stock heads on all Lincoln cars in 1968-1971 and had 10.5 to 1 compression ratios... Block off the EGR and remove the hump in the exhaust port along with gasket matching and give it a nice cam with upgraded springs and ignition and 550HP is easy to make with about 600FP of torque. Also 1968-1978 big blocks are internally balanced not that it really matters and pre 1973 engines the timing marks are zero from the factory not ret@rded.

do the early heads flow a good bit better than the later smog era ones? i know most have the egr bump on the exhaust side that really needs to be removed
@AtomicReverend
@AtomicReverend 4 месяца назад
@@augustusappling139 i have never seen any flow rate testing but from my personal experience with a 1973 Lincoln (8;1 compression) just changing the heads from a 1973 stock to a 1970 stock head (10.5;1 compression) is a significant power increase. Obviously in a land yacht like a 1973 Continental more door it isn't the fastest car ever but it went from a consistent 78 mph quarter mile to an 85 mph quarter mile. Then when I did everything I listed in my previous comment if I can manage to hook (it spins the 235/75/15 tires like nothing after all the mods) it seems to be around 100ish (it has only hooked twice on my personal quite quarter mile street so I can't give an honest answer). To answer your question a little bit better the 1973 head isn't a terrible head from everything I have read at least when compared to the mid 1980s stuff. As an example I had a buddy who had a 1987 f250 4x4 and he took my old 1973 heads and other than putting new valve stem seals on them he put them on top of his 460 with no other changes and it definitely improved performance I don't know it it was worth all the work considering he only had them on there for a couple of months before he made a torque engine with all kind of mods for towing. But the 1987 truck is pathetic in stock form and it felt a bit more spry with just the head change.
@augustusappling139
@augustusappling139 4 месяца назад
@@AtomicReverend Ive got an 87 4x4 with a 460. my plan right now is to do a lot of what youre talking about: straight up timing, re-curve the distributor, plug the egr port and port the bump on the exhaust side, and put some flat tops in it and maybe do some work on the heads(springs, roller rockers, bigger valves- gotta read up on that though) but i was thinking about keeping my d3ve a2a heads and just get my compression up in the 9's with flat tops rather than getting the older heads just bc ive heard the compression gets a little high for todays fuel with the older heads. What kind of fuel are you running?
@AtomicReverend
@AtomicReverend 4 месяца назад
@@augustusappling139 my 70 (D0VE) heads are definitely a premium fuel head and I wouldn't recommend them on a work/tow truck because of the compression ratio. That being said my Lincoln never pings but it also never hauls more anything other then 3 or four adults and it's own weight so it isn't exactly under any real load in terms of what a 460 is capable of and as I have gotten older I don't drive it like I stole it real often (nor is it my tow vehicle any longer) so again pinging isn't an issue In the case of your truck the 73 (D3VE) heads will definitely make it a little more spry then the garbage stock E3TE head or the (I think) E7TE head and if you remove that stupid little bump in the exhaust and then Port match with the gaskets supposedly that's worth 35 to 40 horsepower that's pretty significant for a few hours worth of work. Just be careful not to get into the egr port as it is under that bump somewhere there are web sites that show pictures of what the ports should look like once you grind them out, I can't post the address unfortunately because RU-vid will delete my comment. If you add a cam that is designed for torque and a decent free-flowing exhaust I would imagine you will outperform a modern hemi or 6.0 LS truck and definitely you will get rid of the sled feel that all 1980s v8s suffer from. My friend's truck was pretty much an identical build to what you want to build and it was stout and he drove that truck everywhere I can't tell you how many times it went to Wyoming from Southern California towing a 28' trailer and it was reliable I don't think it ever gave him a hickup.

I suggest you change the timing chain to a double roller with multiple key way positions. The 429 had 12 degrees more timing and the hp was higher. As you said in this video the 460 loves the timing? Well use the timing chain to time it like a 429.. and if you want to go stock, use ‘69 year 429 pistons.

- Not one bearing clearance was checked. - Protecter sleeves weren’t installed over the connecting rod studs during engine assembly. - No cam break in. - Cam should have been degreed when installed.
@Cheezeball99999
@Cheezeball99999 3 года назад
While you're right about the rod studs, they just didn't show checking clearances and cam break-in. They said at some point way back that they cut that stuff out because it would get boring if it was in every episode, and they're right. I, too, used to be worried that they never let engines break in before throttling them to redline, but we've been since assured otherwise. Though again, not sure why they didn't put anything over the rod studs. Some of us just use little pieces of fuel hose, so there's no excuse.

Is there any possibility that you can upload some OLD episodes from the mid-late 90s when this show was called "Hot Rod TV"? Back when it was just Joe and Pat. I remember a couple episodes when they put a roots blower on Pat's "grocery getter" Chevelle Wagon and another when the same car developed a rod knock that led to a full engine build.

I don't believe anything I see from these videos. It's like anything else done for entertainment purposes, they do things to entertain not for reality and accuracy. Although I do find them entertaining because I like the subject and I am no expert. I guess like things I know a lot about if I did know a lot about cars I would find these videos cringe worthy. I do however know a some about cars just not enough to know when they fake it all the time, some are very obvious. Good catch on the ignition.

It is very possible. Someone may have had a failed ignition module and replaced it with a simple points distributor. Or maybe whatever junkyard sold them the engine got it all wrong.

I find it comical that the majority of the people commenting on these videos do not realize these are very old episodes and were aired on the "Paramount" cable TV channel (a.k.a Spike, a.k.a TNN) every Saturday and Sunday morning back in the late 90's-present day. RTM just changed the show names and cast around over the years
