Wow! I purchased a pair of the exact same speakers yesterday at a thrift store for 6 bucks. I watched part one and two. Anxiously wanting to see the results of your before and after audio test I searched for part three. Then I noticed that part 2 was uploaded only 3 days ago, lol. I will be watching part 3 when you get it up. Thank you for the very detailed and easy to follow information. I am confident that I can update my speakers the same except for soldering the new capacitors, I will get help with that. Or maybe get a soldering iron and practice before attempting. Thank you Sir.

Thank you for the nice comment. It may be a few days for part 3. Soldering is really easy; there are lots of good tutorials on RU-vid. You should be able to get a soldering iron and some rosin core solder at Harbor Freight for less than $10. It's a great skill to develop! www.harborfreight.com/lead-free-rosin-core-solder-69378.html www.harborfreight.com/30-watt-lightweight-soldering-iron-69060.html

This 3-part video is surely the most viewer friendly crossover service how-to I've seen. Each step is clearly demonstrated and bristling with important details (including safety advisories!). Basic technical aspects of measurement and crossover electrical function are presented in simple enough terms to lend a sense of the principles involved without bogging down in the maths. This effort should inspire confidence in even the most nascent hobbyist. There are a couple of minor corrections to be made in the crossover schematic (at 5:16): The mid/tweeter shunt inductor is actually 1.0mH rather than 10mH. The decimal point is barely discernible in your sample (at 4:52). Inductors in my own Nova-7B's are much more clearly labeled. The HF Compensation switch position labeled "Normal" is actually the "High" setting -- all series resistors are bypassed, hence will yield the highest tweeter output. Inversely, the position labeled "High" puts the 2Ω resistor in series with the tweeter for the "Normal" setting. These are mere quibbles that don't detract from the excellence of this video production. Bravo!

Thank you for your kind words. Also thanks for the info on the inductors and the compensation switch.

@@LifewithDavid1 Is it advisable to spray some deoxit on the 3 position switch for the tweters?

@@LifewithDavid1 Is the weatherstripping you used for the speakers foam or rubber?

@@LifewithDavid1 Very interesting and informative video. It will greatly help in the restoration of the 7b speakers that I bought if they are not shot. Thank you

@@SDsailor7 I suppose it wouldn't hurt; just don't hit the speakers with deoxit.

That woofer looks like the woofers on the Optimus one that I used to have.

That would make sense. They are all from the same family. Back in they day, these were decent speakers.

@@LifewithDavid1Hello, I am restoring a pair of Realistic Nova 7B's and would like to know if the capacitors are nonpolar or polarized? The ones installed look like they are nonpolarized. Thank you

Just wanted to know if the woofer surround is foam that needs replacing or rubber that doesn't- thanks! I did subscribe.

Do you have to reinstall the fiberglass insulation inside the Nova 7B's?
@LifewithDavid1
@LifewithDavid1 12 дней назад
Yes. That prevents unwanted resonance. Thanks for watching.

You were wise to remove the fiber Glass,idid the same thing on some bookshelf bostons I have it really improves the midrange in my opinon!
@LifewithDavid1
@LifewithDavid1 2 года назад
I did re=install the fiberglass before I reassembled the speaker. I wanted to keep the vintage sound, and I wasn't sure if removing the fiberglass would change the resonance in a bad way.

Usually, it is the tweeters that blow on these. Be very careful, they are super hard to find.

Why not use a polypropylene capacitor as non polarised caps will give a kind of distortion as the waveform goes from plus to minus and back? It is such a cheap upgrade when only one cap is required per crossover. Apart from that, the video shows what needs to be done and how to do it.
@LifewithDavid1
@LifewithDavid1 3 года назад
You absolutely could use use a polypropylene capacitor! I just got these NP electrolytic caps at the same place as I got some other speaker components so there was no additional shipping charges. At the frequencies these are used; there is little difference in distortion. The quality is perfect for these speakers; after all, they're not Rogers or Advent speakers. :-)

I'd have used gloves and a mask when handling that fibreglass, vaccuumed the rest out of the cabinet, and replaced it entirely. Awful stuff.

I know what you mean. Surprisingly, the fiberglass was in great shape and held together very well. There was no residue and didn't itch at all. Thanks for watching!
