I really liked this color, so I bought another Acura RDX Aspec AWD. This one doesn't have the red interior but other than that, it is pretty much the same as the last one. The damage is a little different so let's get into this job and see just what it will take to get it back on the road.

Here in Australia, that Acura would be a Statutory Write-Off, in other words a Parts Title. Vehicles with far less damage than that get totalled with a Parts Title here.

My hands were covered with warts from handling hydraulic fluid in the Navy. They were ugly and getting them off was painful. Years later, as a mechanic, I was happy as a pig in slop when they came out with the exam gloves and the mechanic's gloves. Say what you want about them, but even more than 25 years after I left a 22+ year mechanic's career, I'm still happy for the "b*tch mittens."

Seems like the insurance companies total these new tin cans...uh cars...with what seems like minimal damage. Do you have any idea (A) what that vehicle is worth and (B) what the estimate was to fix it? (this or another of your builds) Do they go by a percentage of damage to determine fix or total?

The threshold for a write-off is based on a percentage of the value of the car in the condition it was before the accident. But the calculation is not just based on the repair cost - it also factors in things like external costs and the salvage value of the vehicle in it's post-accident condition. As an example, my car was written off after a fairly minor accident (similar to the car in this video, in fact) - this was based on a number of things - (1) the parts were on backorder with a long lead time (2) my policy provided a replacement car while the repairs were being carried out and (3) the vehicle had significant salvage value - taken together, they wrote the car off.

Worth $45k, rebuild cost was $25k. 70% is the general threshold for a total loss but due to the back order of parts, they total it to avoid paying for a rental car the entire time. They also know they can get a good price at auction so it becomes a numbers game. If they can total it and end up paying out the same or even less it makes sense, no liability that way.

That bluetooth swaybarlink reminds me I'd need to change those on my car, those that are on rear... Freaking barely 8cm long pieces of shit. At least they are easily accessible as you need just lift rear end of the car, not sure how easily they come off though as they most likely are original from 2011 and been there while in the land of snow.

They would accept a split wheel for a core? Would they really straighten that wheel and weld it back together?

Cores are no longer for obtaining rebuildable parts. They are now a tax. A salvage yard can sell a wheel for $200 with a $100 core. You don’t return a core and they get to collect $300 for their wheel that was originally cheaper than other yards which is probably what brought you in the door. If you do return a core, they toss it in the scrap pile and get $20-40 for it. They really don’t want the core, they make more if you don’t have it. The same goes with engines, transmission and rearends although they do occasionally sell those to rebuilders if they are in high demand. Manufacturers are doing it with headlights, bumpers and other rebuildable parts to stop remanufacturing companies from repairing parts and driving prices down. Sorry for the novel.

Previously, he was getting the OEM seat back cover only - reupholstering is not the right repair procedure since OEM use special threads for that airbag to deploy properly.

On my rebuilds, I purchased and installed seat bag, tested and then sent the seat to a an upholster that specialized in this type of work. He used a special tread to complete the repair
