Rebuilding my Ficus Bonsai Structure

I chopped down some and removed all grafted branches. Last couple of years, I tugged grafted branches into places to make it look decent but I was not happy with its structure, so I ignored that for a while and focused on developing a stronger base instead. Finally got around to dealing with its structure. I either go on not being fully happy with its structure or do something about it. I decided to rebuild it properly. I got some very nice massive cuttings I will roots so can't complain.

Ficus is like clay and so good at coming back from drastic work. Awsome work and happy to see more updates from you!

Thank you! It is one aspect of Ficus I enjoy. A lot of work can be done on it without any problem with the tree coming right back!

@@VicTheFigGuy Especially Salicaria. I fear no plant. But those things.. They scare me.

@@chrisrose323 lol I can understand that. Ficus salicaria is interesting because it is not as vigorous as a lot of other ficus species. There is a pretty good reason for it. What we know as Ficus salicaria may actually be a witch broom mutation of Ficus pertusa. A botanist I know did a DNA barcoding and found that it matches Ficus pertusa DNA. This makes sense because then it means Ficus salicaria is a cultivated mutated dwarf phenotype of Ficus pertusa which explains its growth habits. This also explains why we do not actually find Ficus salicaria growing naturally in the wild unless planted there from nursery stock.

@@chrisrose323 haha yeah. It is always fun to see! The massive backbud is also a quality of witchbrooms mutation.

Good idea. I have a similar large bonsai and am planning on chopping it down. It’s become too tall and not bonsai looking :). I think yours looks better, curious how it looks in a year or two! Thanks for sharing your experience.
