In our new episode, we finish the complete nut-and-bolt restoration of a 1979 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica.
After Mike Hailwood’s spectacular victory at the 1978 Isle of Man Formula one race, Ducati commemorated this event with the introduction of a race replica. This bike was introduced in 1979 and only produced in a limited run of 300 (initially announced to be limited to 200!) and came with a certificate. Although Mike’s racing bike was based on a 900 NCR Formula 1, the street model was largely based on the 900 Super Sport of the same year with bodywork mimicking the sport Motorcycle racer.
In this video, you can watch Harné working on finalizing the build. A big moment comes when the bike is started for the first time in many decades! Subsequently, the bike is road tested and adjusted to finish the project.
This particular bike was featured in the 27 October 1979 issue of Motor Cycle Weekly, a UK magazine at the time. If someone has an original copy of that magazine available, we would very much like to buy that!
Thanks for watching this episode and see you soon at Back to Classics!

Loved this bike when I first saw it in a bike shop in Sydney, Australia in 1986. Couldn’t resist it and gave up cigarettes to fund it. Being Australia, the powers that be always want to fiddle with everything so the front indicators had to be on stalks a la the rear ones. Not that powerful compared to similar Japanese bikes but handled beautifully and always made people smile.

Indeed the Japanese bikes of the day weren't up to Ducati when it came to handling. Enjoy your Ducati on the Aussie roads!

Oh that wonderful sound. I'am also from Australia and owned a 1976 900ss. So glad to see such a wonderful restoration coming down to OZ. Feeling very envious of the new owner.

Utterly phenomenal. I had a restored Laverda Jota 180 big valve 1980 at one time. Could never decide which i preferred the look of, that or the Hailwood.

I used to keep all my copies of MCN and MCW and would have had that issue, MCW didn't go on for that long after ending early 80's I think. Sadly the pile of old papers just go too big and they were disposed of some time in the early 90's to make room for hundreds of magazines (now also all gone)

Been there, done that, with this & many other Ducati models including Darmahs, Pantahs, 860GT. 900GTS, 900SS & of course a show quality '79 MHR in Toowoomba, Australia in 1986/87.

Goodmorning! Just wondering which company you could recommend for the black chroming of the exhaust. Thanks for the great builds and putting that on RU-vid!
