My parents and I were there when they loaded the van on that lowboy. One of the coolest things I ever saw growing up was him taking that jump onto the deck. Happened to have stopped for a bite to eat on the way back from a dice run. Thank you, after the last couple weeks I've had, for the smile on my face. And the memory shared with my dad and wife, as I'm laying here recovering from losing a leg. Nice to have tears from laughter, rather than pain. Lived a few hours away in Twenty Nine Palms from 78 to 83, and we used to stop and eat there about once a month.

“…he’s the same Brock Yates that did Diamond P Sports, and Car and Driver Magazine, and announced the Daytona 500, and he’s answering Travis Bell’s phone calls…” It's beautiful that he did and equally beautiful that you have the humility to appreciate it like that. This guy has raced up the ladder of VinWiki contributors to very near the top. Watch out, Ed.

My guess is someone yanked the motor / ambulance stuff, painted it a normal color, put a 318 in it and sold it as it was still a newer van back then. After that the van would have disappeared but I bet someone knows what happened to the dick landy big block.

Finally. Thank the Lord....a real, honest to God car guy on VinWiki. This guy has all the earmarks - he breathes it, smells it, tastes it, does it himself. He respects the stories and the history of the vehicles he's interested in and does his homework - and even meets his heroes once in a while and treats them with the proper reverence. Finally - he gets that what is coolest about being in the hobby are the people, the emotions, the stories. Even though Brock and Hal are no longer of this earth, our storyteller here will still do his best to honor his word to them. Not all cars have "souls" as he says - but he likes the ones that do. As do I. Good on ya, Travis. Job well done. -Ed on the Ridge

This had me in tears at so many points. I watched Cannonball on a crappy VHS in the early 90s and fell in love. Thank you so much. Absolutely epic times back then. And any German Petrolhead born before ´85 knows the Engelmann Spiegel. They were on Walter Röhrls Championship Ascona and on basically every tuning Opel in the years to follow. They look so smooth and satisfying. Greetings from Germany,

Hell, I'll admit that I am. Remember that night, seeing the ambulance parked there and it getting loaded up. But, they are tears of happiness, and fond memories, after 2 weeks that involved losing a leg. Listening to dad tell my wife about it was priceless, after we all sat and watched the video. Just like shiwijf her the t rex construction pictures mon took in 82, after she first saw Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Ain't no shame in leaking a little after hearing a story like this, has the love and respect he showed Brock and Lady Pamela. Same thing we felt when I tracked down my mom's first new motorcycle, 2 years ago, to give to my wife, as a 13 year anniversary gift. One from the woman who taught her to ride.

cars definitely have a soul. I had a blue corolla many years ago that when I played an mp3 cd in it that had 300 tracks it would play Eifel 65 "BLUE" but if I tried to skip the song it would play something else then come straight back to play "BLUE" it did that every time I skipped it one day it happened 8 times in a row until I let it play through then I did not hear the song again for weeks. It was just my cars favorite song I guess

I saw The Gumball Rally before I saw The Cannonball Run. I was around nine for GBR and say eleven for Cannonball I found out by reading Car and Driver that there actually was a race, it's history and that Brock Yates & Dan Gurney had set the cross country record a few years back as they completed the modern version and set a new cross country record in the process as well as the early years of the One Lap. I think I still have those magazines and if I ever find them I'll give them to you because you deserve to have them if you don't have them already. Recently I loaned my copy of the Cannonball book to my ladyfriend who is in her early nineties. She absolutely loved it. She's still cruising a 2012 S550.

Great story. I have been looking for the yellow "Lincoln Continental" rocket car used by Ken Carter & Kenny Powers to try to jump from Ontario, Canada to New York State, a stunt which was the basis for Hal Needham & Burt Reynold's movie Hooper. I have found many pieces of the car, but not the hulk. Maybe one day. Anyway, I recognize the struggle in your search for a vehicle which should be accessible, but just seems to have been lost to time. I have looked for almost 10 years.

Dang shame they continue to run into problems with that motor and trans combo. Good move on switching to EFI. They should throw on a holley dominator kit and be done with it. Incredible things you can do with the modern holley efi stuff. Hell, it even has an "auto tune" feature. While nothing beats custom dyno tuning, on the fly running the auto tune is pretty handy. Side note, I just want to say Ed keep up the amazing work with your videos. I always watch every video that comes out and have yet to find one that I didn't watch start to finish and enjoyed every minute of it. Anybody, and I mean ANYBODY, that says Old Cars DON'T have soul has never owned a car with history. My Ex-father in law had a '66 Malibu Wagon he built and drove DAILY. About as bulitt proof as you can get, short of the points. 350/glide/2:73 rear. This thing was built to pull. 310hp to the tires. 375 torque. It absolutely HATED his Wife. It would dump her in the middle of the first intersection she came to and refuse to restart. Anybody else could jump in, hit the key and it'd fire right up. Soon as she got behind the wheel it would die. I've had to many things like this happen to me to not believe they don't have "soul".

Winning kind of doesnt matter anymore. It has been elevated to a automotive icon that you could not possibly buy another car with so much story behind it. Replica or not. The story spans multiple generations now and its not even finished yet :) I see it continuing on VINwiki.
