Hi Chris, just found your channel and have caught up with all the vids. You are doing a good job. I owned a series 1 RS turbo from 1988 to 90, but the villains in my area drove it more than me so I had to get rid! I actually made money on it, but someone I know just sold a mint one for nearly £40K, so should have kept mine. Anyhow, you are obviously discovering the best people to watch on RU-vid, particularly Dave, who's just a top bloke. The other inspiring channels to watch are Fitzees Fabrications (originator of the "cut and butt"), Elin Yakov's Rusty Beauties, Trev's Blog, Carter Auto Restyling (originator of the weld a bit grind a bit) and Yorkshire Car Restorations. They all do some incredible work and there is something to learn from all of them. I am currently trying to finish restoring a 1998 BMW 840Ci which is beating me to be honest as I am 70 now and things are so much harder than when I started on it about 6 years ago. anyhow, keep up the good work and I look forward to the next videos.

Thank you Sid and thank you again for the help with the wing, it made replacing the sill so much easier, I was worried about how I was going to do it.👍

Thank you, yes I’m pleased with the progress so far. It’s been a bit slow the last couple of week as family life has been busy but I managed to gat an hour or two on the RS today. 👍 Good luck with yours too mate.

Stayed awake to watch this its really coming on since the begining I will be excited to see it resprayed and all the interior going back in and also weather you will change to the 90 spec interior with front and rear spoiler , but I would probably guess you would want the final outcome to look as original as possible 88 spec I would imagine. Look forward to the next one.

Thank you, I’ve not made my mind up on whether to respray it myself on the channel or leave it a professional, I try and do as much of the work on my cars myself. I’ve been collecting the interior parts since I’ve owned the RS as it had no interior when I bought it. I think I’ll be putting the 88spec bumper and spoiler on as it will be correct for it year but I do have a 90 spec bumper incase I change my mind in the future

Thankyou for your reply Chris, from watching from the very begining won't be long now until the project changes course and the work becomes easier you will probably be taking the red fleck seats apart to do the seat pans and bolsers be very interesting to see what direction you go next once the underside is complete keep up the good work Chris.

Thanks, there will definitely be a video on the interior restoration, it will be so nice to be at that stage once the welding is complete.

Magnum panels don't fit well towards the back of the sill - neither do any of the others - they all fall just short on width. I've found that cutting off the upstand on the new panel & adding a 90' extension to give an extra 4-5mm of width solves the issue. That also allows you to solve the issue of the new panel not coming up high enough to spot-weld it to the cars existing seal-upstand. Your cars B pillar is not rotted, so you didn't run into the issue - but most are - as you didn't use the rear 10-15" of the repair panel. The rear 10-15" is generally off. That & your door bottom is solid.. you have a bloomin Unicorn there, lol. :-)

You also did what I do - chopped the lower wing - so disregard my earlier comment. :_) Cracking work btw - verr nice.

Thank you, both doors are solid, the boot needs a bit of welding but I’ll work round to that. I love the unicorn comment! Thank you.👍

Excellent job Chris enjoyed this vid. Definitely carry on with the other side 👍🏻. I see your still using the cut and butt technique how much of a overlap do you leave on the panels when doing this? May give it a go with my fuse box panel I have to weld in on mine
@ModernClassics81
@ModernClassics81 Год назад
Thank you Stephen, the cut and butt technique is great for jointing panels and I found doing about 6 continuous spot welds then grinding them down as they cool works well to minimise panel distortion. As for the overlapping I don’t think it matters but try and make sure you get the cutting disc at about 45 degrees to the panel when you cut it, so when you push the new panel to the original panel the joint is much closer then if you cut the metal at 90 degrees. I hope the technique helps with your car.

Great video! Ive watched it a couple of times to get some ideas for when i replace some sections on my own. I could do with a cutting disc to attach to my drill, too! What did you use, and where can i get one?
@ModernClassics81

Hi thanks for the comment. I’ve done a little review on the cutting disc and folder that I use in my latest video.
