Walk around the island village Rebun Island (Hokkaido) / The northernmost island village that can withstand the harsh climate.
The northernmost manned island in Japan, located about 59km west of Wakkanai City on the Sea of Japan. Leven is a word that comes from the Ainu word "Levensiri (Okinoshima)". Rebundake at an altitude of 490m is the highest, and the east side gradually slopes toward the coastline, but the west side has cliffs that continue for several tens of kilometers. Since being designated as Rishiri Rebun Sarobetsu National Park in 1974, the number of tourists visiting has been large, and the number is now 100,000 per year. Since it is located at a high latitude of 45 degrees north latitude, it is an island blessed with abundant marine resources such as "Hana no Shima" where more than 300 species of alpine plants grow naturally, which can only be seen at altitudes above 2000 m, and sea urchin and kelp. Famous nationwide. Currently, prehistoric, ancient, and early modern remains and relics have been confirmed at 55 locations on the island. Among them, the Funadomari Heritage site (nationally designated important cultural property) in the northern part of the island was excavated with jade pendants showing trade with Honshu and accessories using potatoes from the sea south of the Boso Peninsula. It is attracting attention as the northernmost archaeological site of the archaeological site that greatly changes the feeling. (See "Shimadas")
From Funadomari in the northern part of Rebun Island to Cape Sukoton is the northernmost island village in Japan. In particular, the view of the village that lives against the wind and snow under the cliffs on the west coast is spectacular. By the way, the northernmost tip of Japan is Cape Soya, and the northernmost limit on the nautical chart is Cape Sukoton, Rebun Island.
Kafuka on the southern east coast of Rebun Island is the gateway to the island where ferries from Wakkanai and Rishiri Island arrive and depart. Near the harbor is a modern town with shops, restaurants, inns and hotels, but as soon as you leave, it becomes a fishing village along the coastline. A little north of Kafuka Port, there is a village called Kafukai, which is the origin of the place name. On the other hand, if you go west from Kafuka Port, you will cross a small pass, and when you pass through the tunnel, you will see a peach-shaped peach rock. This area is a fairly steep rocky terrain, and the former settlement is clinging under the cliff. The youth hostel Momoiwasou, which is located a little far from the former village, utilizes a herring banya that is over 100 years old and was once famous as one of the three major youth hostels in Hokkaido.
Rebun Island Shiretoko is the southernmost tip of the island. It is a village overlooking Mt. Rishiri (Rishirifuji) on Rishiri Island over the sea. The fishing village of Rebun Island has boathouses and fishing facilities on the beach, and the main building is a little retracted or higher, but in the Shiretoko village, the coastline is close to the main building. Perhaps because of this, the breakwater is well built to protect the village. However, because each house has its own style of pulling up to the beach in front of its own house (there is no cohesive pool), even if a breakwater is built, openings are provided in every few houses to share the boat yard. I'm taking. The townscape has a gabled roof and you can feel the unity of the clapboard.
