I’m 23, and I don’t wanna say I have a receding hairline, probably more like a mature hairline, but a couple of days ago I got an 8 guard on top with a mid skin fade on the sides and a short beard for the summer. I was contemplating doing it for a long time and I was afraid that it wouldn’t look good with my current hairline, but it actually looks perfect and I love it!

Hey thanks for this video. 1 inch top and short sides is called crew cut right?

SJ14 I would call it a long crew cut or a college cut. Be careful with names ans numbers. Say that you want 1" on top and the sides and the back tapered in a short, medium or a low/full taper. Short meaning scalp shows through the hair higher up the head, medium less scalp shows through, and a full or low taper has the least exposure of scalp just at the neckline. A barber - if he or she is worth their weight in salt - should be able to give you the best cut for that look. It's only hair and it does grow back, if you don't like it. Also remember, you can always cut more off, but you can't put it back on. If you're uncertain on the length, err on the side of keeping it longer. I try my best to advise my customers when I think they are making a mistake. The advice is well meant and comes free of charge. If they take it fine, if they don't that's fine too, but I often hear "I should have listened to you" in the aftermath. That's why I always say, find a haircutter who you trust, one who will work with you and give you the best style/cut/look possible. Max

SJ14 My professional advice is to go to a barber and ask the same question. There are many reasons why to do this such as face shape, body shape, hair density, structure, texture and recession that are all a part of determining the best haircut for you. If you can find a good barber who will take the time to look at what you have and then make a realistic assessment of what is possible. You will be given the best professional advice possible. Find a time when the shop is not too busy which will make it easier for you and the barber to discuss options. I personally hate it when somebody comes in and says this number or that number. It’s not about paint by numbers because you are a unique model and need to be treated as such. Breaking down Nick’s advice...it was good. Keeping the hair shorter on the sides and back will make a longer top look fuller. A number 8 is 1” long. It’s short without being a buzz cut. As a rule, there should be full coverage (no skin showing through). It can reveal a weak hairline or diffuse thinning if these have already progressed. I think there is a fear of going “short” because of the unknown results. There is any easy way to get a rough idea of how a buzz cut will basically look. Get your hair sopping wet and comb it straight back ask tightly as possible to your head. This will give you a rough idea of how you will look. It will reveal your head and face shape before going short. Albeit there may not be any skin showing through and the short bristles won’t be there. The question is then whether you think you can wear a short cut that hides nothing. If the answer is yes then, I would say go fort it. Otherwise a longer top and short on the back and sides may be a better choice. Remember that hair grows at a rate of about 1/2” a month. This will help you calculate roughly how long it will take you to grow your hair back to its present length. Good luck!

Thanks - I actually have no thinning, I just naturally have a bad hairline. Also my hair grows forward facing so if I keep a bit on top it makes my hairline look less harsh, kind of softer because it just goes down like a very short fringe. That’s why I think I wouldn’t look good with a full buzzcut. Can’t stand it much longer though because I have kind of very fine messy looking hair that won’t go over to the side or anything so quite short is the only way to keep it neat. Thanks for the advice

SJ14 I still suggest you talk to your barber/stylist. You may need help finding the right style and length. Fine hair can be difficult in many ways. I think you may need a longer fringe and a good product that will hold the hair in place. Just a question, have you ever used volume powder or dust? It does a great job on my own fine hair. It creates weightless volume and texture. It's great with shorter fringes creating texture along difficult hairlines. Aside from that avoid having your fringe cropped in a blunt straight line. It should be carefully textured to suit your fine hair. If you need any more help, feel free to ask. Good luck! Max

I respectfully don't agree. There are many variations to a buzzcut. Some are more extreme than others therefore not presentable in a professional setting. A number 4 is just between buzz and crew cut .You can style it. A number 6 I agree is useless and way past buzzcut territory.
