Hey Grant, I've been working days and nights for about 10 years. Start by staying up later and later until you are able to stay up the same hours as your shift. I can usually do it in three days. Buy a box fan and and blackout shades for your room. The sun makes it difficult to sleep. I put the fan on middle speed so it provides a consistent ambient noise to mask any noise you may hear. Trust me you will need something. On my off days I try to wake up earlier on day one so I don't waist as much of the day. I stay up until 2am and go to bed. When I'm bored, I work out in the middle of the night, play video games or focus on personal goals. Congrats and I look forward to your journey -Billy

Billy that is great advice, thank you so much for sharing. I will definitely be getting black-out curtains and a fan! I will also try to do what you said with waking up a bit earlier on day 1 to not waste as much of the day.

wait, you were only scheduled 3 days a week? 12 hour shifts, correct? i know shifts vary, but i thought it was strictly 4 days a week. i am beginning work in january. in regards to you mentioning the negative reviews, i 100% agree. I'm a psych major, so I totally know reviews are only left by people super unhappy or super happy, and it's rare someone's so happy that they leave a review. but it is hard to let it go in one ear and out the other when you see so many bad reviews, so i appreciate these videos!!

Thank you for sharing your experience during your Amazon hiring process. Amazon is one of the top companies globally and a hard company to get in because it is very competitive. I got an offer for the Area Manager position at Amazon last week, and I decided to take it. My offer letter states my total compensation, start date, and location, but it does not mention my work hour or the department I'm responsible for (Inbound, Outbound). I think I'm L4 because I was hired through a college program, but I'm not sure. I was searching online; however, my salary is more than what an L4 makes. What is the salary range for L5 and how do i find out if I'm L4 or L5?
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
Hi Migdalia, congratulations on receiving an offer, that is great! My offer letter did not state whether I was an L4 or L5, this is something I had asked in response to my offer letter. The relocation package I received was noted as being for L5/L6, so that was an indicator prior to receiving confirmation from the recruiter. In regards to the shift, I was told my shift a when I got information on Process Path Training, which is during your second week where you work as a member of the team you will be managing.

If your offer letter clearly states there is no negotiation on the salary, then I would expect them to hold to that. You can always ask your recruiter but in general if a letter says no negotiation from regardless of the company, typically they hold to that.

Hey, Grant! I have enjoyed watching your videos concerning the Area Manager position. I am a senior in college from Texas, and have been offered the position after my Spring graduation. Like many others, I am also a bit scared to make a decision due to the apparent high turnover and bad reviews online regarding the position. Another issue is that I got offered the position across the country and not in Texas like I’d hoped, and I’m just having difficulty deciding if I should join a very successful company and move across the country even though I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews online on the position. I understand that this would just be the beginning of my career and first post-undergrad experience, but I definitely wanted to keep thinking through the decision before I made up my mind. Is there any advice you could give me concerning my situation? I know I’m going to have to make a decision for myself, but I would love another perception and your input!
@Layersncurls
@Layersncurls 3 года назад
Just like Grant advised, ignore the reviews online and reach out to real people on LinkedIn or in your network. At the end of the day, understand and know that it's your decision to make and everyone's experience is unique to them. I have been working at Amazon as an Area manager now and it's been a very interesting experience. It has taught me a lot about myself and about people. Even though it hasn't been rosy all the way, It also hasn't been bad all the way. I've had some ups and downs and I have learned from it. Amazon is a great company to work for especially thinking about the times that we live in; the job is secure and there are lots of opportunities to do different things, try out different positions, live in different places, (You can always find your way back to Texas by transferring) and grow as an individual. They invest a lot in their people and that alone is very commendable. I hope this helps you.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
HI Yamile - your concerns are totally valid and it is great that you are thinking through these things. Like you are saying, this decision is something you have to make for yourself, and when people approach me with these concerns I typically say that the "risk" with this is dependent on how comfortable you are investing in your future career by going through a wildcard like an AM role. By wildcard I just mean that there are quite a bit of unknowns that you won't uncover until after you accept the role, but that is also the fun of it. I believe that if you worked at Amazon and made the best of the experience that it would be a fantastic investment in your future at such a young age. If you were to decide that Amazon is not for you, nothing is permanent and you can go elsewhere. Just like Abimbola said below, it is such a huge company that you would probably be able to work your way back to Texas if needed at some point. One thing worth pointing out is to take a look at the response these videos have elicited and read through some of the comments. Take notice of how many people have the same concerns as you. If you worked as an AM, these people would be your peers and they would understand what you are going through and that is how you develop strong relationships. I wish you the best in making your decision!

I have worked the nights as an associate at amazon and am applying for an AM position now through their campus next program. Buy a good facemask for sleeping in the day that's the main thing I did to manage the nights. I was wondering how long are your shifts and do you know if there is a way to transfer off nights after you start or are you stuck working nights for a while.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
Ian Chandler thank you for that advice, I have blacked out my and hopefully will be able to adjust as quick as possible. I mainly don’t want to be up all night by myself on the days off so hopefully I can adapt my schedule somewhat. My shifts are 12 hours three nights per week, and from what I understand you are on that shift for a while but the length of time is purely dependent on the person and situation.

@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
Hi Cortney! From how it has been explained to me, a big differentiator between L4 and L5 is experience level. Definitely ask your recruiter to further explain in detail the differences, but I would assume most college students going in to their first job may be in an L4 position, whereas external hires may be more likely to go in as L5. When it comes to compensation, benefits, and hours, this is something you should ask your recruiter as I cannot speak on that level of detail publicly. I would not focus so much on L4 or L5, I would focus on doing a solid job and working your way up from wherever you are brought in.
