The success of Netflix's popular series The Queen's Gambit has stoked new interest in chess, and a fascination with children who show early genius for the cerebral game. The Fifth Estate looks at examples of parents who attempted to foster genius in chess, with dramatically different outcomes.

My family all play chess, starting around age four, at home or in school. No-one considered it as a career. They all have interesting careers and play chess with their own children. Everyone seems very happy.

Judith recently beat Magnus Carlsen in a friendly game in Madrid in just 23 moves. Very impressive! And most important, she looked as if she was really enjoying herself and loving chess

I grew up in a chess family (my dad was a member of the Canadian Chess Federation for years and my brother is a former provincial medallist) and I coach chess at my high school. Thank you for this! I knew about Judit Polgar, but not how exactly she became so talented.

All of the translation from Hungarian to English in this video are highly incorrect ! At times the narration doesn't translate at all what the people are actually saying Native Hungarian speaker .

Genius + insanity has not only been in chess but in the world of artists and scientists. The Polgar dad is so wrong thinking that it could happen. A the most, you get what chinese parents do, create little sad monsters who play perfect piano. Thats it.

So you don't think these ladies are 'kind and thoughful?' Perhaps you think they're evil, and thoughtless? It's not either/or. You can quite easily be kind and thoughtful, and beneficial to others whilst at the same time being a dedicated, successful person. TBH, you just sound like a hater towards these successful sisters, which quite possibly means that your parents didn't raise _you_ to be "kind, thoughtful and beneficial to humanity."

this "report" focus mostly on bad cases and try to imply they are typical, and for that dishonestly ignores actul typical cases, in typical western trashy "journalist", anything for a buck and predetermined conclusion, fashion. no desire for looking at an issue in an unbiased well rounded way. so much for "journalism". in reality, most professional chess players, including most world champions(including all of the former still living ones, both men and women ), are very well adjusted. notice how this video doesn't focus or interview actual living champions (most of whom were also child prodigies but are doing well as adults) but devote time to a obscure canadian player, with a sick abusive father, who didn't and was never going to achieve much. and while focusing on off beat hungarian polgar "experiment", this ignores soviet's successful system of tapping talents without destroying the players' lives. or current russian or indian chess cultures which produce great players without destroying their lives. again so much for "journalism", a "the fifth estate" like this stinks.

Bad cases? Child abuse is rampant in chess, and most elite chesspalyers are dweebs. Why do you think I waited until 54 to become seriously good? I've spent more time in the chess world than all of you put together I bet. It's a terrible place and child abuse is rampant. Kids who lose to Beth Harmon get hit when they get home.

None of the Polgar sisters was ever world champion. Polgar never beat Kasparov while he was world champion. And a true genius is like Capablanca who, despite the fact that his father would not let him play when he was very young, turned out to be one of the greatest players of all time. Many great champions have considered him the greatest of all time.

You don't understand chess history well if you think what the Polgar sisters did is anything short of genius. Not everyone needs to be a champion to be a genius. There are plenty of examples in chess from Keres, Mecking, Khan, Judit polgar, etc...

@@gerdotamas4895 When that game was played, Kasparov made a mistake but Judit accepted it. He should have gotten up from the board and not continued the game. The outcome of the game, had Kasparov's move been preserved, is unknown

These aren't prodigies, mostly abused kids whose parents wish they were prodigies. Kids who lose to Beth Harmon get beaten up. Scholarships to private schools are at stake. I was a chess prodigy and the last thing I wanted to do was waste my best years on chess. Finally on track to become world champion (up 740 points past six years) because I literally have nothing left to do. Age is not an advantage: I don't have a life at my age. A twenty-one year-old playing chess fulltime is an atrocity.

Judit loved playing chess so it isn't an atrocity. Her Sister Sofia was more interested in Art than Chess which is why she didn't become a Grandmaster.
