Love this side by side comparison. I use a combination of lard and tallow instead of palm. I use 2 parts lard to 1 part tallow and love the creaminess from the lard and extra hardness from the tallow. All my customers love that my soap lasts ages 💕

My husband says his mother used to have to make soap back in the day. So, I asked him what, if there is, a difference in tallow vs lard in soap. He explained and answered correctly! I've been trying to make more natural soaps in hopes to get us further off the detergent "soaps". It's a struggle with inflation, but we're making it work! Great video and thanks for the comparison! 💖

(Note for those with sensitive skin or eczema) Thank you Ellen for the recipe, and I have a note that I hope will be accepted Please note this in your upcoming videos An increase in the percentage of coconut oil will dry the skin
@richardthompson14
@richardthompson14 16 часов назад
A side note. If you fill your mold to your desired amount, the grams of water you add is equal to the milliliters of water. 1 gram water = 1 ml of water. If you calculate 65% of that, you will be real close to the perfect amount of your fat addition. It will be a little less since oil weighs less than water.

Being farmers, I render my own tallow from our animals. Most of my soaps use tallow, coconut and olive. I use both beef and sheep tallow. You mentioned the bacon smell in your lard. I clean my tallow 2-3 times before i use it and have no smell in them. Always seemed more sustainable to us to use what came from the back yard than palm ftom the other side of the world.

Tallow is richer in stearic acid and has more satturated fats than lard, therefore the difference in lather. But lard is so creamy and gentle. They are both great fats for soap

Yay! I was hoping you’d do this. I’ve made palm oil soaps for years but it is way more expensive now. I’ve gone over to the carnivore side and have been using both rendered oils. Now, I know how to describe the lather factor.

@EllenRuthSoap been trying figure out how to get a better lather, but was trying 45 % lard 45% coconut oil 10% hemp , but the 20% makes so much sense! How low can the cleansing conditioning bubbly numbers go and still get a good result ? I read on a forum some confusing stuff, and would really like to understand 😅 Also, THANKYOU for telling us about lard soaps lather improves with curing, how does tallow compare later too?

Tallow has a little more lauric and stearic acid in it, this more bubbles. I love them both but tend to use more lard as the cleansing is a little less and condition higher.

I use tallow more than lard just because of easier access (I save the lard and bacon fat for cooking), but I did get a little pork fat recently and I double rendered some for soap. Hello Mrs. Ellen, I love your videos. I laughed when I saw the title of the video the battle of homestead Soapers. I have a question if you do water discount, does that mean the soap will cure faster? Or why do a water discount? Thank you very much. I am a fan ❤

A steep water discount does help a soap cure faster, plus it reduces soda ash and glycerin rivers.
