REVIEW
On Friday, May 24, 2024, I attended Reckoning LARP for the first time. Live Action Role Play (LARP) is my biggest creative passion and hobby, and I was so very excited to experience this particular game for the first time, especially with it being under new management and knowing that there were measures taken to really improve the quality of the game experience, and the creative minds behind the changes.
I joined the Vadurkin culture/faction as a wanderer, and my original character, Estrid.
While the game did not get to last the entire duration, it was planned due to severe weather, the experiences I did have were unlike any other, and made me want to return for more. While I have truly enjoyed every event I have attended, this was a nice pallet cleanser, and no two have been the same.
My immediate observation was how welcoming the culture was, and ultimately all of the players no matter the culture. Out of game experience was just as great: lighthearted, fun, warm. My personal experience was so wonderful, as I was lovingly embraced for my creative contributions, which made me feel really good that they accepted what I wanted to bring to the table in character.
I did notice there was a great sense of comfort in the ability to stay in character and carry out role-play. Found it to be easier on my part when others are just as comfortable- we feed off of each other. Not one time did I feel uncomfortable being in character or felt silly.
The game mechanics were incredibly interesting to me, as there was the added element of magic/higher fantasy. There were a lot of rules to learn in order to participate in the different mechanics, but the staff and the other players were patient and kind as everyone got more familiar and were able to implement easier.
Witnessing the special effects used for orcs, and the undead was fantastic. I had chills witnessing their appearances, it was so realistic. Having them present, created a sense of underlying doom that we awaited with excitement, along with an unease on how to handle the danger at hand, which upped the ante- our problems were no longer just gathering the most resources and fending off other cultures for land.
The staff took on heaps of obstacles that were out of their control and handled it to the best of their ability, and I am in all of them. The way that they handled the event as a whole was astonishing and downright admirable. They did everything with a smile on their face and encouragement. This was a big task to take on for the first year, in between managing personalities, storms, third parties… They made sure everyone was safe and had a great time.
Not only do I recommend giving Reckoning LARP a go if you have ever wanted to experience role-play at this level or just want to try a different LARP experience, but I’m looking forward to personally returning next year.
