For the guy who wanted something like Avatar, it depends on what parts you liked in Avatar -Characters and Worldbuilding: Brandon Sanderson -Comedy and Romance: Percy Jackson -Representation and Cultural magic system: Earthsea -Similar feel: Blood and Bone, or any of the Avatar inspired books out there. If that doesn't satisfy, just watch Dragon Prince Edit: Quirky side characters: still Percy Jackson Politics: Anything Star Wars except episodes 7-9, Rogue One, or Solo.

I've got some "different" fantasy books to recomend. (Of course authors are influenced by each other, thus some things will always seem familiar.) My first recommendation is "Krabat" by Otfried Preusßler. (Having been originally published in German, there are a few English titles.) It's set in eastern Germany during the beginning of the 18th century and tells the story of a homeless boy who through dreams gets summoned to an eerie mill. He becomes an apprentice there and soon finds out that, next to milling, magic is also taught at the mill. However there is a very high price to pay for the power magic can give. It's a quite dark retelling of a folktale, with an interesting mixture of fairy tale-like elements and realism. Besides, the protagonist has one of the best character arcs I've read! Aside from the story being captivating, it also shows what it could be like to live in a totalitarian system, as well as how people handle grief and trauma (the author experienced the Third Reich and was a prisoner of war for five years). Another book I'd like to recommend is "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. It's about a guy living in London who one day finds a girl bleeding on the sidewalk and takes care of her. In doing so he gets involved with a place called "London Below". Basically, there is a underground world, whose inhabitants are invisible to those who live in "London Above". The worldbuiling is very intriguing and there are lots of interesting characters. By the way, both books have great villains!

For creepy vibes, I remember reading a book about a girl that goes to a boarding school, but the school is empty. She makes friends with the ground keeper and also there's two dolls that talk, and she makes friends with them over time. Eventually, she tells them that they are dolls, and they break. She is grieving over them when the ground keeper has a heart attack. She is in a really bad place when she goes back up to the attic where the dolls are alive and well (actually, not quite alive but you get what I mean) and there's a third doll as well. One that looks just like the ground keeper. Someone please tell me what it's called!!!

A good transition from YA I would recommend would be "tales of the Otori" as a historical fantasy trilogy (with a sequel and a prequel, making 5 books) where we follow a young lad as he grows and, later, his lives as an adult in a Japanese-like country.

For the person wanting something somewhat “confusing,” I’d recommend Malazan. For the sci-fi / fantasy one at the end, the Warhammer Horus Heresy series is great for that. You don’t necessarily need to know the background lore or the gaming system to enjoy and appreciate the books. Plus they look gorgeous on a bookshelf.

A good book/series to read where you fear for the reader but it is not necessarily a thriller is Keeper of the Lost Cities. It's different, funny and somewhat confusing sci-fi, can get you in the reading mood easily because it's short and funny but also intelligent, ans I personally also found it to be a great palette cleanser. Hahaha I love Stormlight and I'm glad younger people enjoy it as well. Everyone has their own reading development and it doesn't always line up with your age. Most of my first adult books were classics and literary fiction, while I was not mentally ready for YA until a few years ago (I'm in my twenties and terrified of drama). Middle grade was my go-to genre (though I also read classics) all the way into adulthood, until a few years ago I discovered Gothic fiction, and then after that, character-driven fantasy (which is how I got sucked into the Stormlight Archive).

Yeah, my stories definitely lean more sci-fantasy than sci-fi. Considering that the more spacey contain moments that would almost require the laws of physics to be entirely rewritten for them to actually happen :-P

A really good YA Fantasy series that is different than the usual suspects is Pendragon. It is a lot like Harry Potter in the way that the books age as you read the series. It is a lot of fun and would recommend it to anyone interested in YA fantasy.

Have you ever read the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz? I am currently reading it and it is basically after the original Frankenstein. I think you will love it

I recently read those. I thought they were fun. A bit pulpy, so they are very quick reads.

The Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab has a strong bond between adoptive brothers. Though it gets more focus in the second book, not really in the first book

Aren't they written by Cassandra Clare? I think she said she won't read books by CC anymore.

@@anjaligoswami5267 She did say that, but I want to say she started and finished the Infernal Devices before then. Think she has reviews for them on GoodReads.
