Holy crap how did I miss this comment? If there's one thing that frustrates me, it's RU-vid's commenting system. If I never get back to you, feel free to email me. So the only way to get other sounds to go into your Zoom recording would be through using a mixing board. The Yamaha MG10XU will do this for you if you follow the instructions on this video. I also have a video on the same topic as it relates to Skype as well. I'm so sorry for never getting back to you on this!

This can also be done without the DAW using hardware such as the Zoom Podtrac P4. The only thing that sucks is that your guest's audio will still be compressed by Zoom. This is where something like SquadCast can come in as an alternative.
@TwoTrakMind
@TwoTrakMind 2 года назад
If you turn on "use original audio" on both your and your guest's Zoom's, you can bypass all of this and get isolated high quality audio from both sources, instead of just yours.

Thanks. I use a zoom H6 with a mix minus workaround to record all the audio away from the Mac, meaning my mic is a separate track with the advantages that has.

That mix/minus workaround is actually what we use in the broadcasting industry. It's more efficient, actually. I know the Rodecaster Pro has this. I guess that's the only downfall of the Yamaha MG10XU, but it's not enough to screw anyone up.

Shan this is great but it's just not working for me. I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB and for whatever reason it's not picking up the Zoom test in Audition. I know that's not much to go on but there is very little else out there on patching Zoom through Audition for a bit of newb like myself to troubleshoot with. Thanks for putting this out there though, I have been knifing in and out of interviews with my questions intentionally, knowing I'll be re-recording and cutting them back in later once I get back the poor audio from Zoom and obviously that is very inefficient and really detracts from the conversational nature of which I'm looking for.
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
Hi Todd. Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. I'm sorry you're having problems achieving this setup. Unfortunately the Focusrite 2i2 USB doesn't have the proper input to the the setting you're looking for. In relation to this particular video, the Focusrite would need an additional channel going out of the unit that would give you the ability to monitor back into Adobe Audition. That channel is something that is definitely available on the Yamaha MG10XU, but not the Focusrite. I've had quite a few podcasters tell me there is a USB function on the unit, but I don't believe it sends a "return" back to Audition. My assertion on the Focusrite is that it's mainly for live sound. Equally, so is the MG10XU, but it does a lot more in terms of equalization and recording. I honestly wish I had an answer for you on this, but to the best of my knowledge, the Focusrite won't create the effect you're looking for as it relates to this video. I'm sorry! 😣

@@ShannonHernandez Thank you so much for the reply, you are definitely 'the man '! I feel guilty for eating your time already but I'll go ahead and ask one more thing - I'm willing to invest in a mixer that will monitor back to Audition because I record from home with guests that 50% are in China or Asia on the whole, and as we know in the podcasting world despite the host maybe only talking 10% of the time it's the host that really needs to sound superb. So, with that in mind, what mixer would you recommend that will help me accomplish this goal that might not be as costly as the 10 channel from Yamaha? For instance, would the 6 channel MG06X work? It's about half the cost of the 10XU and I don't need 4 inputs. If I'm looking at mixers in general, what is the specification I should be looking for it to have that the Scarlett doesn't but the MG10XU does in the description? Much love!
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
Soooo, I wish the MG06X worked for this otherwise I would have bought it myself, but it's a matter of the 9/10 channel on the MG10XU. That channel is responsible for running the guest audio from your computer to the mixing board back out to Audition. In other words, it's all mixed in together. You can see my Basic Podcast setup here to see what I'm talking about: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4qfIVMBGmmI.html This link should take you directly to that section in the video. There are other boards out there that have this function, but where they fall short is in the electronics. Id' stay away from the Behringer brand because you'll have that board for a year before it starts to act up on you. I've used it with 3 different clients and each client had to replace it within a year. The Yamaha is the only one that has stood the test of time for me--and with the USB channel, it has made life so easy. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Shannon, I'm curious to know if you can explain whether recording through Zoom directly saving to a HDD versus recording Zoom audio through Audition would make a difference? As you mention in the video that the guests's audio is going to be subpar still. I already record myself directly via Audition and the guest through Zoom.
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 3 года назад
Hi Alexander. Sure thing. When you record audio directly into Audition while using Zoom as the bridge to transmit audio into Audition, the audio quality is going to be much better because nothing has been severely processed. At that point, nothing has been mixdown or processed by. means of a platform's limitations. If you record direct into Zoom without recording into Audition, you're just capturing the audio that Zoom is capturing. Once you end that Zoom recording, it takes Zoom time to save to your computer. From what I remember, that process happens to lower the quality to (I believe) 96kbps. You'd have to check on that number, but it's not at 128kbps because you can obviously tell. So if you want better audio, record you audio through Audition with your microphone piped in through your mixing board and having your computer piped into your mixing board. That will give you better audio quality. Does this make sense?

@MattJacques
@MattJacques 3 года назад
Thanks for this! But just so I understand, this doesn't solve the problem of audio drop-outs, glitches and network latency that can still pop up over zoom, right? There are some cloud recording services out there that seem to solve that problem by recording the guest's audio directly to cloud and then you download it afterward. Zoom has cloud recording too, but I'm so frustrating that it's pre-mixed down to one track... 🤦‍♂️
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 3 года назад
Just a heads up, this is a long answer, but I want to make sure I address as many sides of this issue as I can. I might make your question into a video because it's a good question. So... It all depends on how you want to process the audio in the end. Personally, I don't worry too much about drop-outs because broadcast TV and radio deal with dropouts all the time even if it's a phone or satellite feed. I don't look at recording a podcast like recording an audiobook. Audiobooks are pristine recordings that are more formal. Depending on the type of podcast you want to do, but I see podcasts as being imperfect with personality. Recording a remote call for a podcast--whether Zoom, Skype, Phone, etc--there will be imperfections. If you want to go with something like Zencastr or Squadcast, the difference is in the post-production work and whether you want to tie all of that audio back together in your DAW and sync it up--and that is the biggest struggle for most podcasters. Even when I recommend they record the file as one audio file and edit from there, they prefer to have those two pieces of audio--which makes for a longer and burdensome process. All of this depends on your philosophy on how you see the audio being recorded. Personally, I am not one to worry about drop-outs because that's a normal part of a broadcaster's daily life and, at this point, should be a part of a podcaster's life too. It doesn't have to be, but I prefer imperfections based on my working philosophy. For this particular video, it's basically a pre-mixed down file other than the fact that your microphone's audio quality is going to be higher caliber than that of a Zoom recording--and that's expected. In the past week and a half I've seen network news run calls like this and imperfect recordings come with the territory. Lastly, I would mention cost. With the services that are out there that are charging to create these cleaner audio recordings, it's a cost that I personally don't prefer to take on unless I was recording a podcast with a regular co-host. To me, that gives a good reason to have a service like Zencastr or Squadcast. I'm willing to take on that cost if I'm trying to give off the perception that the two-cohosts are in the same room--and I would assume you could bring in guests to do the same. From there, I would export from whichever service and do the heavy lifting in my DAW. But if I were just recording interviews, I know that not everyone has a microphone or is going to care about using podcast equipment. More than half the interviews I see on TV and online are with someone on the other end just using their laptop microphone--which is frustrating for the podcast host, but that's the world we live in. As I said, if you want to go down the route of Zencastr and add steps to your post-production process. It all depends on the time you want to spend. I hope this gives you an idea of where I am coming from in my head and hopefully gives you some options to think about. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything.

@@ShannonHernandez that’s awesome - thanks for the detailed and thoughtful explanation. I guess there’s always that trade off of quality when you’re doing remote interviews... and with the type of guests I have on my podcast, I don’t think it would be fair to expect them to have a great mic of their own or follow a huge list of instructions from me. I guess I’ve just been self-conscious of the guest audio quality, but good to know I’m not alone in that regard. If you do end up making a vid on the topic, I’ll definitely check it out... and would gladly offer to collaborate by asking my questions ‘live’ if that’s ever something you’d be up for!

Anyhow, looking forward to that test of yours in the future! I’ve subbed and am going to hit the notification bell so as not to miss a single vid. Both your Zoom vids inspired me to run that Passthrough test on Loopback and it really seems like it worked, however if you don’t have a license the audio quality does in fact degrade after 20 mins of recording, but I don’t know how badly. It would definitely be a great option for one off quick recordings here or there for users who can’t justify a physical mixer for an occasional project (though they really should). Keep up the great work! Peace.

Hi Shan, how is you guest audio fed into the MG XU? What if I don't have a mixer but using a ZoomH6 digital audio recorder?
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
I know that you can do this with a Zoom H6 recorder, but it's kind of a pain and there are far too many steps to take when you do it. I borrowed an H6 from a client and it was more hassle than it was worth. The H6 is mainly for field recording and not studio recording, even though you could use it in a studio. I don't have a Zoom H6 otherwise I'd do a tutorial on how I would set it up. But to answer the question, the guest audio is being fed from the computer when you change the settings to MG-XU. On the physical board it's being fed in Channel 9/10 USB IN.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks again!
@ShannonHernandez

When managing audio on webinars through Zoom, the level input from your guest has to be managed on their end. It's just what you deal with when you are handling multiple people on webinars through Zoom. It has been like this for years. The best way is if they're running their audio through a mixing board and likely that's out of the question with most of your guests. I'm sorry there isn't a better solution.

Hi Bill. If you're doing straight phone calls, and that process works, I'd say keep doing it. I use the Yamah MG10XU specifically so I can take calls through Skype, Google Voice, or wherever. The MG10XU has a USB channel that you can feed back into your recording software. The simplest and easiest way would be to get a Rodecaster but that's about $600, but has the ability to bluetooth calls in. I'd say if there is a process that is working for you, go with that, but if you want to make it easier, you'll need to upgrade from that Focusrite to a Yamaha or Rodecaster.

It really is going to depend on how much editing you want to do and how creative you want to make the process. If you already have the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, then it would make sense to just use PP. But if you're just recording a back and forth conversation, you might not need that much creativity. I personally just use Screenflow to edit my videos because it's just there for me to record and edit. I'm not doing anything super creative at that point. There's some creativity but not a whole bunch since I'm only sharing information and screen captures.

Hi Anne. Thanks for waiting on my reply for this comment. I meant to get back to it but I had a crazy busy week last week that I neglected to get back to the comments fast. My apologies. No question is stupid on this channel. Some people are new to the process while others are still trying to get a handle on the process. So you're not alone. So this video is the answer to your question. But you may need to buy equipment to make the audio sound awesome. That's the only thing that you'd need to be aware of with this video. It's the same process I use to record videos using Streamyard. Basically I have all my audio running through platforms like Zoom or Streamyard all into Adobe Audition--you can use Audacity too. Then I hit record in Audition to capture the audio that is being fed from my computer through to my mixing board and back into Audition. Simultaneously I'll record on Streamyard so I have another recording--not as high quality, but it serves as a nice backup. Plus, the video is great for repurposing the interview to promote the podcast. The only thing you would need to pay attention to is that you are monitoring both recordings while you're in the middle of the interview. A few weeks ago I did an interview on Streamyard and my camera blacked out. So it does take a little bit of practice to learn how to monitor both recordings, but it come with time. Don't expect to get used to multitasking this way right away. The only reason I know how to do it is because I have learned multitasking after years of working at the radio station. Go at your pace, but make sure you're always moving forward and trying to get better. I promise it gets easier. I'm glad you like my videos! Let me know how else I can help you out!

@ShannonHernandez 3 года назад
Hey Adriano, you're welcome. So the board you have doesn't have the USB channel that feeds through the board. The board you have is kinda bare bones and mainly for live sound. Even if you upgraded into the Xenyx 12, that board still has problems. I was able to patch sound from a computer, through the board and back into a recording program, but it was sloppy. When I first started out with some early clients, they had that Behringer board and found it had limitations based on their needs. That's why I recommended the Yamaha to them--the setup was way more simple. Just as a heads up with those Behringer boards: if you decide to keep that board, keep an eye out on the output signal because 2 of my clients had that board and eventually it had low noise signal on the output for the podcast. Turns out the mixing board failed on both clients. I can't say that it will happen to you, but keep an eye on it. I realize it was a little more affordable than the Yamaha, but we realized there was a reason it was affordable. If you wanted to make it really simple, you could look into the Rodecaster Pro, but it has a heftier price tag. Does this help?

thnks for sharing it, how do you improve the audio of the other peer when you have a guest?
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
I believe in the video I mention that you can't improve the audio of the guest. Unless the other person has a nice microphone and has a podcast setup that is decent, there isn't a way to improve their sound quality. The only other way you can do this is by doing a Skype phone call where you call them via a Skype number and conduct the interview via telephone using this same method. I have a video for that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JWWXhei44Oo.html Phone calls are already normalized/equalized, so all you would need to do is adjust the levels on your end so you can capture the audio. Other than those solutions, most of your guests are going to be using their webcam mics. I would provide the option for either having them use a great microphone (which they will likely decline), or make the process easier on yourself by calling them via Skype telephone and conduct the interview that way.

I have a question, and you’re the only one that I know to ask. I recorded my first podcast today over Zoom using your advice. I used the MG10XU with the Samson Q2U. Every 3 minutes or so in the recording, the audio would completely “peak.” I don’t really know how to describe it because I’m new to this. I went in and inserted the Zoom recording for my guest’s audio when the Adobe Audition recording was “peaking” or freaking out. This was so much work and I definitely don’t want to do this every time. I am willing to follow directions and troubleshoot in order to make this work. Please help.

Shannon Hernandez I did some more troubleshooting to try and figure out what the problem is. It almost sounds like feedback when it happens. It happens for probably 7 seconds every 3 minutes in the recording. Also when I play it back in audition, I can occasionally hear that same sound, but it disappears when I play it back a second time. So I have concluded that it is not an error with the microphone, because it happens when the mic is off. It must be a problem then with the audio going from the MG10XU to Audition on my Surface Pro 3? It did not come from my guest, because the “feedback” is not present on his end of the zoom recording but it is present on my recording over zoom. Do I need to download the Yamaha MG10XU Driver?
@PeterAlanJohnson
@PeterAlanJohnson 3 года назад
@@jamessnyder2531 It is unclear from your question whether the problem is on the recording or not. If it's sometimes not there when you play back, or it occurs in different places, then it isn't on the recording and there is something wrong with your monitoring (like, that your own mic is still live and feeding back, for example?)

In order to get the same sound, you would still need to get a mixing board. You have to record from the source (your mic) in order to get the clean sound. But if you're talking about doing something similar to Zoom, you can check Skype Meet Now or Google Meet. If you want something that is a little more streamlined, you can check my latest video on StreamYard: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--zxeEbQNDMc.html

I'm starting an audio only podcast with one mabke two other people. I want to open with a intro/description of what will be on that episode. What is your opinion of recording the intro and possibly the outro the same day as the interview, and try to force the show in a predetermined path. Versus having a desired path, but letting it flow organically and record the intro later?
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
I wouldn't "force" anything, honestly. When you force it then it makes for a recording that you end up not liking. I'd record the show, then create an intro/outro after the fact. That's typically what my clients do so it doesn't come off sounding awkward.
@MarianPierreLouis
@MarianPierreLouis 4 года назад
Do you use Zoom or something else typically? I've been using Skype since 2012 but I'm starting to think it would be easier on my guests to use Zoom (this way) because so many more people are using Zoom these days rather than Skype. I want the best sound quality but I also want to be realistic and make it easy for my guests. What do you think?
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
Hi Marian. Thanks for the comment. Honestly, as the content producer, I use whatever is easiest for my guest. Typically I'm just calling them over the phone and patching the line in through my mixer into my DAW. But I can do the same thing with Zoom. If you use the setup in this video, you can have the best quality audio on your end when you talk in your microphone. If you want the absolute best possible quality sound, your guest would have to record on their end as well and then send the audio file to you so you could match it up. To me, that's just going overboard for something that isn't set up for remote broadcasting. Even in radio, our remote broadcasts sound remote. It's just the nature of how you record/brodcast. But at the end of the day, I personally use this setup and recommend to the interviewees that they record through a USB microphone and wear headphones to avoid feedback.

@@ShannonHernandez Thanks Shannon! I appreciate your response. I think I'll give Zoom a try. Can I ask you another totally random question? I'm trying to improve my podcast sound as much as possible (without the benefit of sound engineering degree or working professionally in the business). My biggest problem is getting my voice and the guest to have the same general loudness. I have recently switched to using a Zoom H6 so I can record on separate tracks. I do my best to get the dB right on input but it never works out perfectly of course! Can you tell me do you normalize your files? (to -0.1dB, -3dB? ) And do you ever use the Match Clip Volume To: Loudness -16dB? I'm just wondering if I should be doing that as a way to create a consistent sound across all my episodes.

Help lol. I love all of this ... I see what mixer you are using ? But mine doesn’t seem to be allowing zoom to record into adobe .. I have a Rodecaster Pro and can’t get Adobe to record the zoom call ... it only records my mic ?? Not the guest. My audio preference is set to the Rodecaster ... and still nothing .. how are you getting the guest Audio to go through your mixer ?? Thank you. !
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 3 года назад
So I wrote out a whole answer for you and then RU-vid crashed on me. So here we go again. 😣 Since I don't have that mixing board, I can't give you the *_EXACT answer,_* but I'm sure it has something to do with your settings inside of Adobe Audition. On that channel that would be Channel 5/USB (between Channel 4 and the Phone channel) , that's where you can turn the volume up for the sound coming from your computer. Since you have the Zoom output set to the Rodecaster, make sure you go into Adobe Audition's Preferences menu and switch the input. Go to *Preferences>Audio Hardware>Default Input --> Rodecaster* No need to change the Output in Audition. From there, the sound should feed directly through the mixing board. I can't say that this will work, but if it's like my Yamaha MG10XU, it should work exactly the same. Let me know if this works/doesn't work because I'd like to know I got it right or need to find the answer.

Duuuuude, so the universe was speaking to you through me. Someone reached out to me tonight and needed help setting up her Rodecaster because she was tired of the Zoom sound being so low-quality. We got on a call and I did a troubleshoot for her and figured it out. So apply all the settings I mentioned. Just make sure your USB channel is turned up. The one step I didn't know (but we figured out) was to disengage Mix/Minus for the USB. From there, you should be able to hear yourself go through Audition and the call coming through the mixing board into Audition.

You should be able to capture his audio via Zoom when you've pressed record. You don't necessarily need a mixing board if you want to capture audio. But if you want to capture higher quality audio, you'll need the mixing board. Check your settings on your end. Likely you have an issue with the setup of Zoom.

I have a question, I want to host a meeting on Zoom (I am just the tech guy and I wouldn't participate in it at all), record all the guests, and later make an episodic podcast out of it. My question is about audio quality. If we send the guests a good microphone each, would that assist in recording better audio on my end...?
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
No it wouldn't make that much of a difference unless they had that microphone and were recording themselves on the other end. Great microphones do help, but it's a matter of the bitrate being used on Zoom. If you want higher quality, I believe Google Meet has a higher quality setting that you can use.

Any tips on recording the zoom podcast in 1080p? Looks like zoom best quality is 720p. TIA.
@ShannonHernandez
@ShannonHernandez 4 года назад
Most online streaming platforms are going to broadcast at 720p just because of bandwidth issues. Higher graphics means more bandwidth usage which means your stream drops out. This has been an issue for many years. Internet service provider infrastructure just hasn't given us this ability yet. Google was on the path to doing this with Google Fiber, but that program went away I think. Short answer: 720 is as high as it gets for streaming.

You would have to mute the original Zoom audio in a video editing program like Premiere, Screenflow or Camtasia and synchronize it with your Adobe Audio. It's actually very simple to do if you have any of those programs.
