🤣The most snow I have ever seen here in the southern half of the UK was about 10 inches in about 2009. The country ground to a standstill. You get 77 inches and you still clear the roads.

I lived in Hamburg NY in the blizzard of 1977. And it was 100 inches or more ❄️🐻‍❄️❄️
@justso4509
@justso4509 Год назад
@Spiritual Arborist I think measuring properly was impossible in '77 since all the snow was blown around by the horrible blizzard winds. Some open areas were swept clean while nearby drifts could be 10, 20 or even 30+ feet high. Most of that snow didn't fall during the storm, experts said there was maybe only a foot of fresh snow. Instead the 2+ foot deep snowpack on frozen Lake Erie blew into the area. That lake is larger than the state of Vermont, so it was a hellacious amount of snow!
@Boni-vw9ld
@Boni-vw9ld Год назад
You can believe anything you want. I lived through it,and just looked it up. My comment still stands.. 🙂
@justso4509
@justso4509 Год назад
@@Boni-vw9ld I believe you, because I *know* it was that deep in some places. Heck, whole houses were buried! I remember hearing about a snowmobile driver who hit the top of a chimney because he didn't realize he was riding over a house. 😱 All I wanted to say was that measuring it the normal way wasn't possible since most of the snow came in sideways, picked up off Lake Erie by the wind. It got deepest wherever it hit something to drift against, like trees, houses, fences, etc. So residential areas could accumulate a lot of snow and farm fields were largely empty. Depth of snow aside, there was a big difference in density. People are wading through this current snow, but in '77 you couldn't really do that. The blizzard winds packed it so tight that it was hard like concrete. In vast areas of that snow you didn't sink in, not even to your ankles really, it was almost as if you were standing on solid ground. Anybody who doubts this can google photos of the blizzard of 77 and see for yourself. You can tell how high up people were by what they were standing next to: street lights, houses, traffic signs, telephone poles, looking down on the roofs of cars, etc.

Reed officially the snowfall in Orchard Park (where the Buffalo Bills football stadium is located) was recorded at 77 inches with more snow (up to 10-15 inches) expected. Hamburg is not that far from Orchard Park and they are expecting additional snowfall. This is not the usual lake effect snowfall for Western New York - ten to 20 inches is the normal lake effect snowfall with high winds and blizzard like conditions. The Buffalo/Niagara airport was closed and there was concern how the Buffalo Bills would get to Detroit because the ball players had to get to the airport. Remember we are "the city of good neighbors" and whatever it took to get the football players to the airport it was done - some players had extreme difficulty just getting out of their homes and to the street but with the help of their neighbors they eventually got to their meeting facilities and then bussed to the airport but now they have to come back with additional snow expected this evening and who knows what will be the status of the airport. They could possibly land at Niagara Falls Airport and then bus to Buffalo (Niagara had a lot of snow but our mains are all open). Just thinking of these guys after all they have been through having to go home and clear out their driveways and sidewalks. Buffalo/Niagara Falls was hit with a blizzard lake effect storm in 1976/7 which paralyzed the entire area and the Federal government and New York State government sent the national guard and their equipment in to the area to help clear the snow accumulation which by my memory with snow so high it was 10 feet higher than the 4-wheeler my company sent to pick me up to take me to work (I was considered an essential worker) and driving down the road the snowbanks had to be up to ten feet higher than the top of the four wheeler and you felt like you were driving down a tunnel. the Federal Government and New York State Government declared a state of emergency for all of Western New York and the blizzard like conditions continued for a full week. If I recall correctly, we also had a major fire during the blizzard and with the snow, wind, and below freezing conditions the water froze as soon as it left the hoses. We all survived that blizzard of 1976 and the next year we had a smaller blizzard of 1977. The people of Western New York are a hearty people and we have learned how to deal with blizzard like conditions and return to normal within a few days because we have learned how to deal with these lake effect blizzard like conditions over the years. This year the lake effect came earlier than expected but we still prepared but we did not expect this amount of snowfall and wind drifting. We will be up and running as normal in two to three days.
