THE MOST INTENSE BLIZZARD EVER INTERCEPTED! Motorists stranded in Buffalo

Insane blizzard conditions are hammering Buffalo, NY with 70 mph winds, dangerous cold, whiteout conditions, and an icy storm surge called a seiche ripping off the tip of Lake Erie. Motorists are stranded across Buffalo. Trees damaged with power outages. If this lake effect insanity continues, this once-in-a-generation blizzard could surpass even the infamous Blizzard of 1977. I hope that all those stranded in the cars tonight are able to find shelter.

In the country, farmers tied a rope to the house so they wouldn't get disoriented in the white out and die. Once they reached the barn for chores they tied off the rope and used it to get back and forth. Personally ,I like the houses and barns in nova Scotia. They are built as one building so the warmth from the house Reaches animals too. Nothing funny about the dangers. In 2000, I was out in -50F, and my lungs were freezing. I was losing strength just getting the barn chores done. And yes, my face was covered.

In Alaska, I've seen these ropes attached, going from one building, through the path you'd walk to another building, and what you do, is people have these harness things with a tether and this clip, and you clip it onto the ropes and they guide you.

@@lindastent-campbell5130 they had building farm structures like this in Illinois farming area, as a teen we cut across the state for a camping trip across/around Lake Michigan. We kept seeing these circular structures in the region, lots of them. So when we stopped for a meal in a structure designed the same way - circular- we were told that this was the way that homes/ barns were designed in the 1800s in the whole area. Circular design with animals in one section and people inhabited the other floor. They just needed one big fireplace for the structure. Stairways carried the heat throughout.

I live in one of the areas hardest hit by this. It was terrifying - I've been through my fair share of inclement winter weather, but this was the worst I've seen it in my entire life. Even the October Surprise storm pales in comparison. My family was at least able to drive to my Aunt's house back then, where she had power once the snow had stopped and plows had gotten through, and the limbs and downed wires were dealt with along the route. The roads this time are entirely impassable, there's a six foot drift of snow blocking me from exiting my driveway, emergency services are still suspended until further notice, trash and recycling services are suspended indefinitely, plows are struggling to clear the roadways, and the death toll is climbing as more of the stranded vehicles are able to be attended to as they work to clear the roads. I have snow drifts inside my garage from it forcing its way in under the closed door, those winds were so intense. The only times I went outside were to clear out directly in front of my door so I wouldn't get trapped inside. Even those short, five or so minute expeditions left my lungs hurting, my body chilled to the bone, and my fingers and toes aching with proper winter gear. Those gusts just do not care how many layers or what kind of fabric you are wearing, any little gap, any seam, it will worm its way in.

If Reed found stranded drivers in the small area where he walked, there must be many more. And he’s absolutely right about the danger of drifts covering the exhaust of an idling car, sending carbon monoxide inside. As I hope all who are stranded are found and brought to safety. This is terrifying and deadly. I also hope that when not filming, Reed covered his face when outside. Frostbite can happen quickly. Reed is experienced and will know this, but others might not.

That's absolutely amazing. I live in NW Washington state and while we didn't have 80mph winds, we did have blizzard conditions. I got 20 inches of snow and saw snow drifts for the first time on the west side of the cascades. The temperature got as low as 8 degrees and we had a couple days where it didn't go higher than 12. For western Washington at sea level that's incredible. The bay froze near the shore also, about 10 to 15 feet out. I've never seen the bay freeze before. Yesterday it turned into an ice storm. This morning it's raining. The Temps will increase to the 50s on Monday. That means that all the snow in the valley and all the snow for a couple thousand feet into the mountains will all flash melt and flood.

I am an essential worker who is luckily sheltering at my workplace in Buffalo which is a place I am very safe at. I have been monitoring communications thru this whole event. Overnight, after about 1am, I heard absolutely no radio traffic / dispatches on Buffalo Fire. All crews sheltered. As far as I know there are no ambulances either, no plows are out due to zero visibility, and police have been sheltering. Essentially right now, if you are in Buffalo, you are isolated to whatever location you are and it is an island. I hope that island you are on has heat and water and food. But if it doesn't, you may be on your own for a while. If there was a time where we needed the Military to step in to assist, with tracked vehicles and better optics for navigating those vehicles, it might be now.
@bubba72205
@bubba72205 Год назад
There's GPS on every ambulance servicing the city of Buffalo, plus I believe BPD cruisers are also equipped with GPS tracking as well. I don't know if BFD apparatus all have GPS tracking, but they have MDT's, so they should. My point here is that even if every public safety vehicle is tracked with GPS, there's still no way to get to any of those vehicles. There are still ambulances with patients on board that are stuck and have been stuck since 1600 yesterday. When they called this a once in a generation storm, they weren't kidding. The last time we encountered weather like this was 1977. All of the 7 feet of snow in 7 hour lake effect snow storms won't touch this storm as far as deaths and property destruction goes. It's time for the individuals in this area to begin listening to weather forecasts and plan accordingly. It's time for people in this area to begin obeying traffic/driving bans as well. If fire apparatus that weighs 20-30 tons each are getting stuck, personal vehicles shouldn't even be on the road, yet the city streets are lined (and now buried) with cars and trucks. And your biggest Billy Bad-A$$ diesel 4x4 pickup trucks won't make it more than 10 feet in this either. This was a "stay home, stay warm, stay healthy, stay alive" event right from the first projected forecast 3 days prior to the initial event, yet a lot of people just don't think that pertains to them. Reed, I hope you're safe, warm, and healthy. You know as well as anyone to not try to drive anywhere from where you are. If you see a fellow EMS provider stuck in an ambulance anywhere, or any BFD firefighters stuck, or any BPD police officers stuck, please check on them to make they're OK. It'll be another 12-24 hours before anyone will be able to get them out and safe. I fear for when this storm begins to slowly move south over the Southtowns because most people still had 6-12" of snow already on the ground before this even began yesterday. Say a prayer for my EMS family, as well as the rest of my public safety family. They're going to need it.

That’s exactly what it looked like here in Eastern South Dakota for the last few day’s and night’s. We were at the epicenter of the coldest and windiest area in the country, while it moved through here. At almost-20 degrees below zero, ppl might not think it’s that cold, but that wind is so bitter cold, it feels like knives cutting your face, and any skin exposed. We dealt with negative-50 degree windchills, and in an area where nothing ever shuts down, because we’re pros at this weather, most things did shut down, except for peoples job’s, they stayed open, and most stores for Xmas shopper’s. But It just wasn’t safe to be out for more than a couple minutes! Luckily, we found a local guy who plows snow as his business, to come plow us out, so the Mister could drive the 35 minutes to work each day. We had to have it plowed at 5am and 5pm, so he could get out and back in, because the drifts were/are insane! We have a plow on one of our quads, but these drifts are too massive! The worst part was letting my two dog’s out to go potty, because they could barely see where to go, or stand up in those crazy blizzard winds, and in 90 seconds tops, their paws would be so frozen that I’d have to help them back inside and warm them up! This is not a place where you let your dogs out and walk away. You have to wait, hold the door open, and be ready to rescue their them in a hurry. Winds have gone down today, thankfully! Only 15-25 mph. The temp is back up to negative -1 degree, and the sun is shining! It’s a Christmas miracle..lol But more snow in the forecast for Christmas Day tomorrow. Aye yi yi.. Stay safe out there, everyone!! Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays! Blessings for whatever it is that you celebrate! God Bless!!🙏🏼✨🎄🎁☃️❄️👍

Protect your pets paws. Put gym socks on all four paws and pull them up to the chest. Buy kids sweaters to put on your pets if real dog coats are too expensive. Their skin/Ears need protection too. Buy kids tie hat to put over their heads and ears and tie under chin. First time out in this weather and dog recognizes immediately the difference. Believe me they are grateful. Ours actually got excited when they saw the winter clothing being pulled out. They recognized their hat and socks . If don’t have a dog coat, then pull out an old teeshirt or sweatshirt and put them in it, tying off the ends so it doesn’t slip off. Dogs can cut their footpads, with ice between their toes, and salt burns on their skin and they don’t get sick licking off the chemicals and salts, if they wear gym socks. You think of them as one f your kids. Treat them as such!

Many buffalonians use the blizzard of 77 as a standard for blizzards. I was young but the drifts were to the tops of telephone poles. I can't say what this storm brings because it's only half way through its wrath but at least there is much more prepreperation for it saving many people's lives.

That band had been parked over us since yesterday afternoon. I was in junior high during the famous blizzard of 1977 and this dwarfs that. The wind has been relentless. Think a cat 1 hurricane but with snow rather than rain and bitter cold temps. Can barely see the houses across the street and had to dig out the vent pipes for my furnace once and will probably have to do it again. The Bills game today will be a welcome distraction lol Be safe everyone!!!

I drove a semi on a 12 hr shift on Thurs night in WI. Longest shift ever. We didn't get the snow amounts they getting in MI & NY as we got around 2". We did get the Gail force winds & the rock bottom temperatures. The lowest I seen was -8* F. They said the wind chill was-25 to -30* F. That was cold enough as the wind blew around all night making for ground blizzards of what did fall. I love Reed's posts. He should make a movie of all of his adventures.

We did just that in the blizzard of 77, my dad and i almost died in that storm. I was 9 and dad carried me a mile and a half down a secluded military road. He knocked on the 1st door we came too and no one home, he kicked in their front door (as a very respectable school teacher and coach for decades) it was hard for him to do but once inside he immediately called the nys police and explained the situation to them. I remember he left a 100 dollar bill on their table with a note for the damage of their door and little food and heat we used until the morning. Lived in wny for 45 yrs and have been through every major storm since 77. A Merry Christmas to everyone !!!

I live in Oswego, born and raised. Nasty winters use to be common. The warm winter have made people complacent. 40 plus inch storms are a way of life here as you can attest. My grandfather had to use snowmobiles and sleds to deliver groceries from his store to customers. My mom still has photos of the Storm of 1966. Think that was 100 inches of accumulation from what my grandparents told me. Hope everyone stays warm and safe.

We were without power- heat for 8 hrs Friday- I woke up to a cold home. My house dropped 12° in eight hours- May not sound like much, but when you have wind chills in the negatives, it gets cold quickly. And with a Driving Ban all over Erie County here- we’re at the mercy of the weather gods & it’s brutal. I’ve been through the Blizzard of ‘77- been through 2014’s Snovember that dropped 7 feet of snow in less than 24 hrs, the winters lasting more than half a year- and getting worse every year- it’s time- my body is done this Buffalonian is now in my 50’s & it’s time - I’m moving south come summer.

Remember working in a blizzard similar to this in Baroil, Wy on an oil rig 1980. It froze our covered two inch water line to our boiler. Our only source of heat. Wasn’t as cold during. With 7° and 35 mph sustained, 55-60 mph gusts. Worst 16 hours of my life. We burned smudge pots (metal buckets with saw dust or cottonseed hulls and diesel) in every wind break we had. We chased frozen everything thawing. We just got everything back to running when a dozer brought relief crew in. 🥶🥶🥶. Wyoming blows 🌬🌬💨

A few years ago I was driving overnight from Great falls Montana to Helena Montana in a snowstorm very much the same as this one except with more snow. I was in a line of cars and we could not see anything. We've reached a point where we all had to drive with our right tires on the rumble strip that is on the side of the far right lane because we literally could not see the road so we had to be guided by the rumble strip! It was the scariest driving I've ever done in my life! If you've ever been where I'm talking about you know that you can't stop there or you would be stranded and probably not make it. Wolf Creek canyon is part of the area but it was actually worse out of the southern end of the canyon closer to Helena. The wind was being blocked by the mountains in the canyon it turned out so once we got out of the canyon it was nightmare driving!
