Thanks for another year of sharing your journey with me. I’m still here, thanks to God, and have not missed any of your videos I’m now 89 years old and my oncologist told me I’m very close to the end of my journey. You bring so much joy and sometimes tears as I make believe you’re talking to me with each narrative. Have a Happy New Year and May God continue to bless you and your family.

If the water is initially hot, cooled water at the bottom is denser than the hot water at the top, so no convection will occur and the bottom part will start freezing while the top is still warm. This effect, combined with the evaporation effect, may make hot water freeze faster than cold water in some cases. Interesting fact

Yes hot/warm water freezes faster than cold. Right now it's -18 here and all of my cold water taps are turned on to a slow drizzle in order to stop them from freezing. Also they must get heat tapes for any pipes under the house or exposed to the outside.

We used to put thick polythene curtains, weighted with a length of 2x2 stapled to the bottom, over our rabbit hutches to keep the wind out in the cold spells in winter.

I used to do the same over my dog crates when we didn't have heat. I'd put a blanket over the plastic for the wire crates, and leave a tiny gap at the bottom for fresh air. When I opened them up in the morning to let them out, steamy warm air would come out...😂🤣😂... They would always give me the stink eye, like, why are you letting all my warm air out???

My dad has talked about when they got a bathroom in the house when he was a teen in the late 50's. They made the living room and a bedroom a little bit smaller to create the new room but they kept the outhouse as a backup. At the same time they converted the kitchen sink from having a hand pump beside it to having pressurized water in a regular faucet. I guess your kids will talk about when mom and dad built a new house "with a real toilet and everything!"

I grew up in the early 60's and our water was in the barn at first. I was taught by Grandpa bbn how to lay plumping and sweat copper pipes. I was 7 and small enough to go in the crawl space under the 24 ft X 24 ft kitchen in our 3 story farm house. Grandpa & I put our flush toilet in too. That has a funny story behind it too. Grandma LOVED GREEN, everything was shades of green. Grandpa loves blue. Grandma painted the walls green, bought new green towels and curtains for the brand new bathroom. Grandpa went to town & bought the new tub (no shower) sink & toilet. Brought them home & he and I installed them while Grandma & mom were at work. Grandma was horrified when she & mom got home from work & inspected our new bathroom. That baby blue tub, toilet & sink are still in that green bathroom to this day! LOL The 3 seater (2 adults & 1 child size seats) outhouse is still in great shape in the back yard as a back up.

Hey a Canadian here. It's been between -30 & -40 for 2 weeks now. Hit -52 with wind chill they other day. Steel snaps like ice at these temps. Stay warm folks.

@@ardenpeters4386 Last year we barely had any snow on the ground for Christmas if memory serves me right. Nothing compares to the winter of '96 though. -20's and over 9 feet of snow dropped in a short amount of time. I remember being in school and there still being piles of snow that hadn't melted yet near the end of the school year. To say North Idaho winters have been tame in recent years is an understatement for sure.

This is our 4th winter, first we've seen sub-zero temps for an extended period. When I lived in the Sierra we had 2-3 weeks of it every year around the holidays, so it's more of what I expected. Hopefully it will warm a little bit, give us 2-3" of snow overnight every few days until March and help with the drought!

@@debrahenderson798 I was only 14 at the time so it was amazing! Aside from being told I couldn't go out to play because it was -20 outside. As an adult now though, no thank you! I don't miss the power being out for close to a week at a time or when IGA had to use calculators to add up your grocery totals lol. Will always remember 96 tho.. helluva winter and we went straight into fire season the next year.

When temps are that low, use stacked hay in front of gates to stop the winds. It will really help the horses. You are a really lovely couple from everything we watch. Love your shows. Stay warm

There are a lot of videos on solar water tanks to help with the big animal water tanks. I’m sure most folks use electric tank heaters but that takes a lot of extension cords or power close to the water tanks. I used a heated dog bowl to keep my chickens water from freezing and a heat lamp by the roost so they would keep giving me eggs, no heat, no eggs from my gals. It’s amazing how cold weather and short days really slow the progress of getting anything done in a timely fashion. Keep warm and keep busy, this is just the first blast. There could be a lot more cold and a lot more snow. I love your channel.

Living in Idaho I know we need the snowpack so if it snows I'm happy for that. The weather is supposed to warm up a little bit next week, currently I have 6 inches of snow on my lawn and it is cold but that's Idaho for you (four seasons)!! The poor animals out there need to be taking care of, Melissa and Jeremy you do a great job!!

Get yourselves some electric rechargeable heat pads. The best place for them is your arm pits to help warm your hands. Be very careful of frostbite, especially with the kids. Happy New Year. Good Luck, Rick

Hot water freezes quicker than cold. The molecules are short in cold water and it takes longer to become long as in ice. Hot water has long molecules like ice. Just saying. Maybe kids can do an experiment.

Thats what ai was taught too, but we use the hot water to break up any ice in pails too. It's cold really quickly

To help the chickens through cold spells, I give my chickens hot wet hot mashes of cracked corn, rolled oats, some apple cider juice and chicken crumbles. I put some salt in the hot water too let stand 20 minutes and then feed to the birds they love it. Also give them some soft grass hay and they love it too really helps to keep them warm. Great job with the horses,feed in cold so important watch for any shivering see shivering more blankets. I feed the horses wet hot mashes of their food too they love it too.

Hi guys!! Here in Montreal we’ve had temps as low as -40 cel with the windchill but not for the last few years thankfully 😅. But I love our winters 😊. Our summers can get pretty hot and humid. You guys are amazing and love watching your videos 🥰

A suggestion for you all. Buy rubber tubs/buckets for their water buckets. You can turn them over and beat the ice out of them and they don't break! The plastic ones will. Stay warm ya'll. Happy New Year!

I totally agree, the cold does make things harder. I'm so over the cold and even the snow already. It's bad enough here in the valley with everything frozen so I do feel for you guys bcz I know it's a lot colder than what we have down here. Hopefully and praying that it warms up from these freezing temps quickly. But at least the snow looks beautiful around your home, not so much here in the city, lol.

Just a suggestion for a science experiment for the kids. Which freezes faster, cold or warm water. This will also help in what temperature water to give to the animals. Really enjoy your journey.
