Video of mountaineers stepping over a dying Pakistani Sherpa on K2 has ignited a debate over whether more should have been done to help him. Norway’s Kristin Harila was one of those who moved past Mohammed Hassan as she made her way to a new world record.

There are obviously a lot of issues here. The majority of people (non mountaineers) don’t realise how difficult and incredibly dangerous it is to rescue a climber at these high altitudes, especially in what is called the “death zone” (above 8000m). In every way, K2 is an extremely treacherous, unforgiving and risky mountain, and this happened at probably the most terrifying part of the climb, a place called “the Bottleneck” which is severely steep and a narrow ledge on the side of exposed icy slopes. It would be suicidal and far too risky to have a group of multiple people trying to rescue a stranded climber, there is not enough room to do so, not to mention the extreme danger involved. It always seems possible to effect a rescue, but sometimes that will lead to multiple deaths because of the risks. RIP Muhammed Hassan.

K2 is a more difficult climb than Everest and even though it is possible to save someone above 8000m on Everest it’s extremely dangerous and some would fail in the process. And here on K2 is the most difficult part of the climb, the rescue would’ve been harder than on Everest. I’m not defending the people who left him but it is really unlikely he could’ve been saved. Many experienced climbers die on K2. With that being said, I do feel sad for this man and I hope his family can find peace. It’s just a complete tragedy.

This is commercial mountaineering. She and her crew as well as others had enough resources to save that guy. But they did not as it would mean end of summit attempt, lots of $$$ lost and her "record" would be longer. This is standard. I seen it few times. They use excuses such as "it was over 8000m". They had plenty of people and lots of oxygen left. Heck, a Sherpa saved a man singlehandedly on Everest this year (!) It can be done. But $$$. But records. But personal ego. I think a Samaritan law should be created in Nepal / Pakistan / China that if you fail to help and continue climbing your summit will not be recognized. And you will never get a permit for the same mountain again. No one is forcing them to help - they are just denied their "dream".

@@opius1199 I have like 10 expeditions behind my belt. I am going to Nepal in 3 weeks again. I am experienced mountaineer with almost 20 years experience. Many pp on Everest die and cannot be helped - for example, I was about a mile away from a tent in which my friends tried to save a climber with severe case of mountain sickness. They had him in their tent for less than 30 min before he passed away. There was nothing that could be done - no helicopter could get there that fast + they would have to lower him few hundred meters. Many die instantly from avalanches etc. I have seen the problem first hand when a climber that could not walk was to wait for a helicopter. Someone should stay with him, right? But a girl pointed out he can stay by himself - and just crawl to the helicopter when it comes. Yep, that is the attitude. On Everest you need to be lucky for them to save you if you did not pay $$$ for such service. And even if you did pay many will try to weasel out of it - after all, dead people do not sue and you can just lie to the family.

Headline of the news states "Sherpa" which is wrong term. Sherpas are proud indigenous people of Nepal's mountain region. The term "Sherpa" is not a general term for people helping to climb mountain. We as Nepalese are proud of our Sherpas and have enormous respect for them as they has represented our nation in the international stage. Al Jazeera need to do their due diligence and make immediate correction.

Yes, 'Sherpa' is a wrong term here, but sadly, those editing Al Jazeera's footage have no or very little knowledge about mountains, climbing and indigenous communities of Nepal altogether.. With regards to an immediate rescue mission of an injured or a dying person at an altitude of 8000+ meters above sea level, it is so risky or hardly even possible, that sadly, it is somewhat problematic to hold others accountable. If able and if the weather conditions allow, those in the vicinity or team members may have taken time and effort to comfort the poor man, but actual witnesses would surely have more information.. My deep respect and sympathy goes out to the family of a very brave Man..

It is my understanding that Mr. Hassan was a "porter," not a sherpa. Porters help with carrying gear, whereas sherpas are guides? In any regard, it is incredibly tragic that the gentlemen lost his life. May he RIP. I believe this needs to be investigated further.

Were they above maximum helicopter altitude? An aerial rescue might have been attempted before trying to carry/lower him.

They never planned to attempt a rescue. The plan was to get to the top and abandon anyone who was injured.

This lady and her team should be forced to donate their income from all their sponsorships towards assisting the family that this man had left behind. She might be a "world-class" climber but in terms of ethics has no moral compass. This if this is the pinnacle of human achievement,it is a complete failure. The fact that people are continuing to walk around them..is so disturbing. How can people carry on and celebrate at the summit after this?

Why? She did not do anything wrong. He was there at his own risk, and he did not even have the propper equipment. He was told several times to go back, yet he did not. Where was his friends and his team? Why did they let him go? Why did they abondon him while she and her team tried to save him?
