Got flash backs of Cyclone Steve ( only a cat 3) My house was one of the only ones that didn't get flooded as we live between two rivers on a beach. Locked in for two weeks. Food and water air dropped or came in via boat. ( mostly beer and milk and bread on the pub runs) Our house had people sleeping side by side until the water, crocs and stingers( jelly fish) returned to the ocean and rivers. I feel for these people.

Thank you so much for sharing this. We are east of town and have not been able to go into town. We live just west of town. This is the first I’ve seen of the flooding. Having ridden out Charlie in 2004, we decided to leave this time. We left (Pine Level) headed opposite from Ian, around 10:30 pm Tues. Went down to Clewiston. Experienced lots of rain and strong wind gusts, but nothing like this. We got back to Arcadia Thursday and now staying in a camper/RV resort east of town. Hubby will try to get to home in Pine Level today, But obviously won’t be coming in from this side. He will try to find a way to come in in from the west. Prayers going up for all of us whose lives have been turned upside down.

I know this is going to sound negative at first glance but it's not, I have lived through 1 cat5, 1 cat4 and 2 cat 3 huricanes, the fact that these buildings are still standing, with a cat4 closed to a water source such as the peace river it's a miracle. Florida is a flat land, waterbed is very closed to where we walk. These areas are expected to get hit like this and for some reason we are always unprepared. 😥
@dfinlen
@dfinlen Год назад
To be fair, if everything is flat the water comes up in very strange places. And besides if they do know the house is in flood plain, its probably the only thing they can afford. All the big houses are high and dry for a reason.

@oterosocram25 Год назад
@@dfinlen Majority of rescues are happening where there are many luxurious homes as well. There is many elements to the discussion for sure but when you see the flood map, waterbed map and other geographical legends you can see that it really doesn’t matter. All regions in Florida have a potential to be this way. Look at Orlando and Kissimmee for example, many people have heavily impacted by this as well.

Just looking at the map... I'm reminded how many lakes and rivers are in the central part of Florida. I am surprised this situation doesn't happen more often. Many folks 'cash out' of their primary residence and retire in an RV full-time. They likely don't consider the risks of occupying the lowest-lying land in the area.
@ketoauntie7301
@ketoauntie7301 Год назад
They could drive away in their RV though, some just didn’t take the warnings seriously enough. There is a reason we are told to prepare & be ready to leave at last the moments notice here in Florida!!! If I remember correctly they have had drought situations . So people think low lying areas are ok till the rains come . I lived in Colorado in the late seventies , the old timers would just shake there heads at the new development being built on flood plains .you never know when it will strick . The wind , the rain , the earth quack . But the poor are often put into these situations due to cost . As a nation we are not in a good place .

It's amazing how poor listening comprehension is these days. The man flat out said in this video that the evacuation warning came too late and that there wasn't time to get these trailers out before hand. Many people who live in those RVs full time don't have a vehicle that can tow them. They buy them, get somebody to tow it to a lot in a park like this and then live their fulltime. People like that wouldn't have time to make arrangements in the face of impending disaster to get their homes to safety. I used to be a fulltime RV dweller and even though I DID have a vehicle that could tow my trailer prepping it to move it safely would take more time than what these people were given. And the idea of pulling that thing in hurricane force winds is just absolutely laughable. There is just so much ignorance and lack of understanding and compassion for people in some of these comments!!!

We need to get the national guard out there and help people get out of there and taken to a shelter.

This is especially heartbreaking because RVs are affordable housing for a lot of people and from the gas stations being flooded (and possibly previously sold out) we can see there weren't a lot of options to get out quickly. We can only assume there may be people trapped inside of some of those units. 😢 God bless the residents and the rescuers.

I find it strange with all that damage, there are pockets of islands of areas that were hardly touched by the impact of the storm. One of my friends that lives in a trailor in a trailor park in North Fort Meyers showed the aftermath of where he lives since he rode it out in his trailor with his elderly parents? That whole trailor park went barely little damage while another trailor park just down the street had all the trailors tore to the ground. That park is for retirement folks to live at, and a lot of them are elderly. They don't have water, power and all that right yet, but my friend did a livestream since they barely got cell reception. Not sure if emergency officials went to his park to check on the elderly who stayed during the hurricane, but these folks might need assistance soon in case they have medical issues before the storm.

I saw one of the news outlets yesterday an area of Fort Myers that had mobile homes that survived very well. Could be the newer hurricane straps did their job!

Hey have you boys seen Riley Lowe out there in a Mullet boat? Punta Gorda Boy 66 year old, we haven't heard from him since Ian landing 4:30pm. He had his boat on Peace River, I imagine he is out there helping, at least we hope so. Commercial fisherman, family trait.
