Who was the YOUNGEST MONARCH EVER? Who was the oldest monarch ever? Which monarch had the shortest reign in history and which the longest? Who was the tallest King and the shortest Queen? These are just some of the questions this royal history documentary from History Calling will answer as we look at record breaking royals. These are the Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses and others from around the world who have made it into the history books because (deliberately or not) they did something extraordinary, something that no other royal has managed. Some of these records are tragic (the most royals killed in a revolution for instance), others are amusing (I’ll be telling you which Princess has the most hit records for example) and many of the subjects of today’s video are Guinness world record holders. So sit back and chill out as you hear about royals from as far afield as ancient Egypt and the modern United Kingdom. We’ll visit 18th century France, 20th century Russia, hear about the babies who were born Kings, the youngest Queen to ever give birth and the most prolific royal couple. Our record holders include Queen Victoria of Great Britain, Louis XIV of France, John I of Portugal, the Romanovs and the Windsors, all the way down to Elizabeth II, her husband Prince Philip and their eldest son Charles III. Some of the tales I’ll be sharing are contested world records and I’ll be explaining why to you that is and leaving you to decide if you think the records are justified.

I have always hoped that French Louis would be deemed a king, because his wife was Marie Therese of France, the daughter of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. It seems fitting somehow that after all she suffered she might have followed her parents as a ruler of France, if only for 20 minutes. (Napoleon once said that she was the only man in the Bourbon family.)

20 minutes seems a bit fleeting to me, especially with no declarations. But it definitely marks their places in history (let's face it - the vast majority of us just fade away into oblivion) and makes for interesting discussion!

Regarding the most petite queen ever: a British friend of mine owned a pair of silk stockings (monogrammed) once worn by Queen Victoria. Worn only once, such personal items were supposedly passed along by her ladies in waiting as gifts to special friends. They were exquisitely beautiful and showed that the queen had very tiny feet indeed!

@@astroterf. I guess ERII had a somewhat small applicant pool for the most important job of breaking in her shoes. Yes, Her Late Majesty actually would have someone [in socks/hose] wear her new shoes long enough to stretch them and also would have the sole scored to minimize her feet aching/getting sore during progresses, or cocktail/garden parties much less slipping. Of course, her low heeled shoes weren't as flat as her double-great-grandma Vic's usual ballet slippers she'd wear whenever possible in spite of the fashion for high heeled boots despite being so short in height.

If we’re considering Royals and not just Monarchs, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, cousin to Queen Elizabeth is currently still alive and has held a Dukedom for over 81 Years since 1942 at the age of 6. This was 10 years before the Queen’s Reign, and in the middle of her father’s reign. He was alive during their grandfather’s reign, which was before both their Uncle’s and King George VI reigns.

Mary Queen of Scots was likely the tallest queen regnant in history - she stood just shy of six feet, which would be unusual even by today's standards but was practically unheard of in the 16th century. :)

You keep forgetting the Danish monarchy. Current queen Margrethe has shrunk a little bit since her back surgery but she was 6 feet tall most of her life. Her father Frederik IX was 6 foot six when he reigned and her grandfather Christian IX was 6 foot seven.

Peter the Great of Russia was said to be 6’8, beating Edward IV by several inches. He was so tall, in fact, that people laughed at his frequent attempts to disguise himself and travel incognito! Edited to add: Love this video and would very much like to see more of its kind!

Of course, the fact that this 'ship carpenter' never stopped commanding the 200 or so soldiers and attendants didn't help Peter the Great's 'disguise'. On one occasion (in Holland) he even went so far as to show off how disciplined his troops were by commanding one of them to run up to the top of a tall tower then JUMP to his death which the soldier instantly DID to the shock of the Dutch hosts! Undoubtedly, the soldier knew his own life was forfeit regardless of what he did but likely didn't want to chance his own family back in Russia being punished for any 'insubordination' !

While almost certainly an exaggeration, Maximinus Thrax was supposedly 8' 1". Based on sculptures, he does seem to have had facial features associated with acromegalic giantism and therefore could very plausibly have been taller than Peter.

That was delightful. You must have had a great time looking up the record-holders for these various royal accomplishments. I don't really have an opinion about the shortest-reigning monarch. Being king for only twenty minutes seems remarkably short, so I'm content for both persons to share that distinction.

Peter won't get it now because Guiness rules require their people to document it and now awarded can only be beat by a future breaker. My family broke their record for largest family reunion by 8 people and they refused to show up for fear of insulting the French family. Lilly family in WV. I normally go to a smaller branch reunion with a couple hundred only going back to my late Grandmother and her eight siblings and only did the big one a couple times while a kid. Guniess rejects many records simply because they failed to show up and likely 2/3 of their records has been documented as beat but they were not there so they say it never happened. When I was young it was interesting but after seeing the politics and denial of facts I take Guiness with a grain of salt outside the league sports.

⁠⁠@@HistoryCalling the Kings Column in Roskilde Cathedral confirms this. Not all the measurings on there are accurate though because it states King Christian 1. as 219,5 cm when his skeleton was only measured later as 188 cm

Emperor Gordian I of the Roman Empire was about 79 when he was accepted as Emperor, his reign was only three weeks and contested by Maximinus Thrax. Despite his short reign, and the fact his predecessor was still alive, Gordian was accepted by the Senate as Emperor, and at the time that was required to be an official Roman Emperor.

the fact that Alexandra’s sister Elizabeth was still killed, in spite of being a childless Nun who did a great amount of charity, is beyond me. The revolutionary leaders (not the starving people on the streets) were brutes, I’m sorry. Also, as I’ve written this, the video has progressed, so, incidentally, lemme just say how handsome Prince Albert was! Good catch Vic (though I find her good looking too, but this is much more disputed)

Yes, the Russian Revolution really showed up the worst in humanity in some ways. The fate of the Romanovs was repugnant. Yes, Albert was a 'dish' to use an old phrase and Victoria thought so too :-)

I agree with you. This is exactly why I think I disagree with people who argue that getting rid of the rich will solve the problem. It won't. If anything, it'll more than likely just clear the way for someone else, and a lot of the time, they're just as bad, if not worse. And I think I've realized why revolutions are called revolutions. They try to get rid of something that didn't work, only to discover that their ideal wasn't all it cracked up to be and go back to what they thought didn't work. All with the unnecessary terror and violence that comes with revolutions. It's kinda depressing when you think about it. 😒

What I find particularly weird (and this is also true of the French) is that having slaughtered their ruling family down to the children, they now exhibit their palaces and personal possessions (how did they survive the holocaust?) as if the revolutions had never happened. Enormous tourist draw, but very incongruous.

That's exactly why I'm still very intrigued by royal history and just high society culture as well. 😊 I know it can be a odd thing to be intrigued by, but I can't help but feel fascinated by all things high society, mostly because underneath the wealth and glamour, there are stories underneath, some are inspirational, others are tragic and many are just like the rest of us when you think about it.

Record for the shortest tenure of a British peerage: Charles Brandon (the younger) Duke of Suffolk, who inherited his title from his brother Henry and died (as his brother had) of the sweating sickness, an hour later. (The were the children of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and his third wife, Katherine Willoughby.)

What a great resource for a pub quiz! Well done HC, loads of interesting historical facts. Were the 2 20 minute kings actually kings? Yes, I think they were. Being a monarch isn't just having a crown put on your head. It is the responsibility that goes with it. The legal framework in which you inherit the throne, whether you want it or not. What you do with that responsibility, is another question. As the UK found out in 1937.🙂

I read recently that the current King of Spain, Felipe VI, is 6 feet 6 inches tall or 1.97m. Would that make him the tallest monarch?

Yesterday, on 16th December 2023, The Emir of Kuwait died, and his half brother ascended to the throne at the age of 83, beating King Charles' record

Excellent work. I can tell you spent alot of time and effort to get these right. Informative and enjoyable. I think the record should go to the Portuguese Loui as the French Loui was never intended nor was expected to rule. Had Portuguese Loui survived im sure he would have been crowned. I would not say the «French Loui was never intended nor was expected to rule». Before the revolution, he was the heir to the throne and was supposed to become king after his father. But, yeah, the abdication was not in his favour. Anyway, French royalty did not allow abdications, meaning Charles X's abdication was invalid. As for «Louis XIX», he ended up as the legitimist claimer to the throne from 1836 (Charles X's death) to 1844 (his own death).

Yes, there was such a law. I read that in Portugal, you had to be declared monarch by the Cortes to be such. that's why the short reign of "Luis II" is very much disputed

I really enjoyed this video of Records-breaking royals.Thanks. It is difficult to consider the two 20 minute kings were actually monarchs. I have recently read about Edward I, also known as Edward longs hanks because of his great height and stature. However, we are not accustomed in measurements of feet and inches. So I had to convert feet to meters to find his height.

Great video as usual! Actually I think I found a lesser known monarch who can beat Charles for being the oldest to take the throne by a few years, there was a Byzantine Emperor who took the throne at the age of 76, Nikephoros III Botaneiates in the 11th century

Is there a good source for that? Some others have asked about Peter the Great too, so I now wish I'd limited that record to tallest English or British monarch. I was guided by the record holders I found listed online, but I'm certainly open to being corrected if that information is inaccurate.

8:03- Although John II 'the Posthumous' of France and Alfonso XIII of Spain both reigned from birth thanks to their respective monarch fathers having died while they were in utero, it also needs to be mentioned that Mary, Queen of Scots was the youngest person to BECOME a monarch in 1542 when her father James V of Scotland died of dysentery at age 30 when his only surviving marital daughter was six DAYS old! He'd just been defeated in battle by his maternal uncle Henry VIII of England and the year before had had both his marital sons die in infancy. Anyway, when the dying Scottish king was told that his queen Marie [of Guise] had safely borne their daughter, he supposedly sighed that his dynasty 'began with a lass, it'll end with a lass'! The Stewarts had gotten their start with Robert the Bruce's daughter Marjorie having died in shortly after her and her husband Walter Stewart's son the future Robert II was born in 1316 but while Mary, Queen of Scots would survive infancy and even bear the future James VI of Scotland and I of England before her forced abdication in 1567 and her execution in 1587 at Henry VIII's daughter Elizabeth's hands, the Stuart dynasty would cease ruling both Scotland and England with the death of James V's great-great-granddaughter the first monarch of Great Britain Queen Anne in 1714!

I think you are pretty much accurate on what you said about the 20-minute kings. I think the French example was just a sorta devils advocate argument about the weird nature of succession law, less than genuinely calling him a King in his own right as he was signing away his rights to that throne. Great video as always! For the oldest person record, I think if Sophia of Hanover managed to succeed Queen Anne in 1714, she would have been the oldest person to ascend the throne, because she would have been around 83 years old! But she died weeks before Anne. After King Charles, I don't think someone will be able to break his record.

@@HistoryCalling True- especially considering that despite being 36 years older than Queen Anne, Sophia was in far better health than the wheezing, badly swollen first British monarch -until her own sudden death of a heart attack after she ran for shelter to avoid an unexpected rainstorm! Of course poor Anne had also endured nineteen (19!) pregnancies with only four children born living and the single survivor of toddlerhood (William, Duke of Gloucester) having hydroencephalitus before his death at age 11.

This was a very intriguing and fascinating video! 👑 Thank you for sharing! This is exactly why I'm still very intrigued by royal history and just high society culture as well. 😊 I know it can be a odd thing to be intrigued by, but I can't help but feel fascinated by all things high society, mostly because underneath the wealth and glamour, there are stories underneath, some are inspirational, others are tragic and many are just like the rest of us when you think about it. I'm honestly surprised that you didn't cover the queen who gave birth to the most children though. I can't remember her name vividly, but I do know that she was a queen of Georgia when it still had a monarchy(and I can, I can't pronounce her name). 😅 I know Queen Charlotte was the British queen who had the most children, but I did see a video where other European queens and empresses had more children than her. Getting back on topic, I find these royal women having given birth to so many babies AND live to tell their story is incredible! ❤ After all, pregnancy and childbirth are tough things to go through, especially if it's constant. All that being said, I'm glad I learned something new today. 😊

For the 20 min monarchs I would argue this: if Louis was forced to sign an abdication then he must have been (however briefly) considered the monarch. You don't make a normal citizen sign an abdication. As for Luis, he also is valid since most countries do recognise that as soon as the monarch dies then that automatically makes the heir the new monarch. That's just my opinion, however.

I loved it. Positively one of the funnest ones. Thoroughly enjoyed it. BTW, just for fun, let's remember that King Solomon also had 300 concubines. I'll have to listen again. Did you mention the ruler with the most children? I was thinking of Pharaoh Ramesses II who had between 48 and 50 sons, and 40 to 53 daughters. He did this while reigning for only 66 years. Good point! Even Louis XIV's 72-year reign consisted of him starting out as a four-year-old boy with regents until he turned 13. IOW, he ruled for 63-years at most while Elizabeth II started as a 25-year-old woman and indisputably ruled until her death 70 years later at age 96!

@@libiusperseus While I grant that Her Late Majesty was not the absolute monarch of Great Britain and could only advise the PM but not overrule the head of government, she (and Charles III) are still quite legally capable of commanding others (and she technically could have declared war but she wisely knew if she tried, she'd have that power taken away). Moreover, the fact that she read and processed government 'red boxes' full of legal motions, government intelligence (it's believed that she was supposed to know EVERY state secret) and her signature was required for laws to be passed, shows she was by no means powerless. BTW, she only skipped 140 days of looking at red boxes during her reign. Yes, she read and processed through them every single day save Christmas Day and her own birthday!

Awesome that you mentioned Prince-Royal Louis Philipe of Portugal! Not only he could had the title Louis II of Portugal, but his uncle, the Duke of Porto also held the title Afonso VII for less than 24 hours, after his youngest nephew became King Manuel II of Portugal. Thus making Manuel II the last King of Portugal, and the Duke of Porto became the last Prince-Royal during his nephew's reign beetween 1908 to 1910. Awesome video! 😊

I think Louis XIV’s record as longest reigning monarch. As healthcare outcomes get better, people will live longer, so many monarchs will live longer, but won’t accede to the throne until they are older adults, so there won’t be many people becoming monarch as children, barring an accident of some kind.

Wow-what a great video! The story of the Romanov's is so sad. I know Nicholas did some horrible things (he was an extreme anti-Semite and he was an awful warrior) but the story is still so sad. I think one of the Russian aristocrats was thrown alive down a mine shaft and they lobbed grenades down after her. Good grief! Not one of Nicholas' family, a relative I think.

I view that the shortest reign belongs the the young king of Portugal, for some reason I had thought it was Spain. For years I possessed a 1989 Guiness Book of World records, and he was listed as having the shortest reign, and I recall no contenders to the contrary. I am therefore content with his claim to the title of monarch with the shortest reign. Technically would not the oldest ascenedant monarch be Benedict XVI who reigned over vatican city from his 78th year until his 86th? He is the electected soveriegn of Vatixan City, an independent city-state. 😁

Louis XIX and Marie-Thérèse being king and queen is pure legal fiction that follows a juridical norm that only royalists recognize (just like Louis XVII being king).
