WHAT KILLED Prince Arthur Tudor, son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York at Ludlow Castle in 1502, where was he buried and what were the immediate effects of his death? This Tudors documentary from History Calling will look at the tragic demise of this 15-year-old Prince of Wales; the boy who was born a symbol of the union of the Houses of York and Lancaster, was named after England’s mythical hero King and who it had been hoped would finally put the Wars of the Roses to bed. Had Arthur lived, he was supposed to inherit the throne and reign with his wife, the Spanish Princess, Catherine of Aragon, to whom he had only been married for less than 5 months, but instead his death upended all his father’s dynastic plans and caused the first big succession upset of a dynasty which would be plagued by them. With Arthur gone his younger brother, Henry, Duke of York, got the throne (and his sister-in-law too) and the princes’ mother died the following year of childbirth complications in a failed effort to replace her lost son.
We’ll look at what we know of Prince Arthur’s final illness, how that illness affected his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, the Prince’s death, his funeral, the multiple places he is interred and at the heart-breaking reaction of the King and Queen upon learning the news. I’ll show you footage and pictures of Ludlow Castle and of the spot in the church in the town where Arthur’s heart is buried.

I think it was pneumonia resulting as a complication of the sweating sickness. The fact that he was reported to have produced sputum ranging from green/yellow to pink implies an infection had settled and progressed to edema.

I find it rather interesting that Arthur has a fine resting place, where his brother, Henry VIII, was placed into a "temporary" vault in which he has remained for almost 500 years. Elizabeth I certainly had the resources to finish the stately monument that Henry had designed for himself, but although she gave the project lip service by commissioning a survey at one point in her reign, she ended up doing nothing. I personally think that putting off the construction of Henry's monument was Elizabeth's "revenge" if you will, for executing her mother. Thank you, HC, for the video. Henry VIII was well hated and broke by the time he died. He was mentally ill and feared by family and the general population. He deserved no more than he got.

Prince Arthur is one of my favourite ‘What if?’ scenarios in British history. What if he had survived? He was the one raised from birth to be king, not Henry VIII, and would he still have had the issues as Henry VIII with pregnancies and children? The Tudor line could very well have continued for centuries had Arthur lived, had children of his own and lessened the pressure on ‘Prince Henry’ to provide an heir.

Prince Arthur and his uncles are some of the biggest what ifs to me. I always wondered what would have happened if Arthur had inherited and had children with Katherine, but also if his uncles hadn’t been usurped, he wouldn’t have been born. Would there still be Plantagenets on the throne to this day?

I find the death of Prince Arthur so sad, at such a young age and just after his prestigious marriage. You can understand why so many of his court mourned him and were so upset at the funeral. And then that his mother died soon after, trying to produce another son 😔 I found the account of the King and Queen's reactions to Arthur's death the most moving, as a parent myself I can't imagine the anguish x

I’d caution against believing H7 reaction. It could be very clever propaganda. H7 was a force to be reckoned with. He could very well have been crying. But was it for Arthur or him? The ruination of Camelot? Makes you think.

I'm a fan of the Tudors, as I find it a fascinating period in history. But I always reflect on how Arthurs death impacted on everything. Had he not died, there would have been no 6 wives, no Mary the 1st, no Elizabeth the 1st and no Edward the 6th. There may have been no issues with Mary Queen of Scots, as there would have been no breaking from Rome under Henry VIII. Its just always fun to think about how history would have differed has he survived to me. So many implications.

I've visited Katherine's grave, and thought about her insulting funeral and burial, and watched your video on it, but for some reason, its only just occured to me that she should have been buried with Arthur! If Henry (and Anne) truly beleived she was the dowager Princess of Wales, they would surely have buried her there. I like to think that Arthur and Katherine actually loved each other and were reunited in Heaven, regardless.

They were very young. I don't think Arthur was the love of her life, Henry was! Catherine was devastated to be cast aside for another woman by the man she had desperately tried to have children with and who turned a blind eye to his infidelities.

I think food poisoning is overlooked in a lot of these old cases. I've had food poisoning several times, once severely almost put me in the hospital. It had to be even more prevalent centuries ago.

The mysterious “sweating sickness”, whatever it was by modern standards, seems to be Arthur’s most likely cause of death. It seems to have been a nasty disease that some people just survived and some didn’t. Arthur doesn’t seem to have been the strongest or most robust person, so that might have had something to do with why he didn’t make it, maybe Katherine just had a better immune system.

What is interesting to me is that catherine showed early signs of malaria, which plagued her then for years, as early as summer 1501. And yet she survived the Sweat. And Arthur was never sickly, that is myth. Yet he didn't make it.

I live in Worcester and visted the tomb a few times and its quite ornate its worth a visit for anyone who happens to be in the area. Elizabeth 1 apparently visited it was well to pay respects to her dead uncle , unlike her father/ brothers reign when it was vandalised, so disrespectful 😮 you get to see the final resting place of King John as well. Its really fascinating that Henry V11 and Henry V111 neither of their first born sons made it out of their teens , Henry V111 in particular: his legitimate heir died a couple of years into his reign, even Henry's illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy died as a young teenager making his obsession for sons to carry on the male Tudor line all the more ironic

Just a note regarding "sprinkling" vs. "sensing." They are two different actions. Holy water is sprinkled from a metal device that has a top shaped like a globe with holes in it on a metal stem. The other "sensing" refers to incense being burned in a thurible or censer, a lamp-like structure that has holes in it to allow the incense to escape. It has a chain attached. This allows it to be swung in different directions or "sensed."

@jegsthewegs ....Why did the child's parents leave him around it? The priest only puts a small amount into it and waves it back and forth as the priest is walking throughout the church. Alot of asthmatics in all of our churches are not affected at all... unless they are standing on top of it as it's setting on the alter. That "story" sounds very made up.

THANK YOU for pointing out what the Bible actually says about marrying your brother’s widow. In all the years I’ve read about Henry’s excuse for annulling his marriage I never understood how he got away with it. It literally doesn’t matter if Arthur and Katherine consummated their marriage. They didn’t produce children so it was technically required that Henry marry Arthur’s widow and produce heirs in his brother’s name. But King James came along much later (as a result of the mess Henry left arguably), so people who spoke Latin or Hebrew and had the opportunity/desire to read the Bible were less common (though surely Henry knew both these languages and more).

Personal faith is not Organised Religion, I've quite a track record as a seer medium handling the interventions of the numinous, and it's hard stuff, not wishy-washy feelings. Things like completing Gandhi's unfinished business, and creating new futures for entire nations, doing what I was created to do. If you want a starter on where they go wrong - from the Boss' viewpoint - Chapter 6 of the Gospel of Matthew's a fair start. Organised Religion is based on the thesis all are equal, which isn't true. We each have a path to tread, I'm not you and you're not me, mine was created 70 years before my parents met.

In 60 years, when travelling and living around the world I have undoubtedly, seen it, heard it or thought it. Religion, the following of and the belief in, causes war and death. In listening to your description of Prince Arthur's death and theories thereof, I was suddenly struck by the death of King Edward VI. Both were 15 and several month's old, and both died of a similar illness, possible TB. Uncle and nephew dieing at nearly the same age is one of those wierd facts of history.

I feel like sometimes it's hard to connect with historical (especially historical aristocratic) parents because they tend to be written about as somewhat emotionally removed from their children, but the stories about Elizabeth and Henry VII (and also Richard III and Anne of Neville) really radiate all the grief any parent feels when they lose a beloved child.

What was truly sad and tragic was the murder of Edward of Warwick, a prisoner of the Tower for 14 years, since the dust of Bosworth. An orphan, Edward had been knighted by his uncle, you know, the worst man who ever lived, then places in his own household at Sheriff Hutton, probably alongside his Neville cousins, the daughters of John, Marquis Montagu, and likely the bastard John of Pontefract. But the decision was made to bring the 10 yr old down from the north and keep in in such heavy isolation in the Tower for the rest of his life that as his sister, Margaret, said, ‘he knew neither goose from gander’ - usually misconstrued as a mental deficiency of her brother Warwick. Had that been the case, that Henry VII set up and then executed a mentally deficient threat to ‘his’ throne it makes the crime even more appalling - but systematic elimination of his wife’s family was the point. All her cousins, one by one, and second cousins, would be exiled, imprisoned, executed, charged with treason. Margaret, the sister, would fall to Henry VIII’s axe, without being charged, not trial, in her 60’s, after that Henry exterminated her sons, one, another Henry Pole, was incarcerated with his young son in the Tower. Henry Pole was duly executed for … well for being in the bloodline, but his son was never seen again, being murdered in the Tower, probably poisoned or starved to death. But no one does podcasts about him, or Edward of Warwick.

I read an interesting article of Ms.Sarah Bryson about the Death of Arthur Tudor.She said the exact cause of Arthur's death remains unknown, several theories have been put forwards. It has been suggested that Arthur may have suffered from some form of cancer or possibly consumption.Another theory that has commonly been suggested, which ties in with Katherine of Aragon's illness at the same time, is the dreaded sweating sickness.Thanks for your video, i always appreciate very much.

The 4 great candlesticks of latone or latten as its more often spelt would have been made from cast brass with a high tin content giving the candlesticks a silvery colour. I guess the 4 candlesticks would have been floor standing and placed around the coffin in much the same way as the ones where placed around the coffin of our late Queen in Westminster Hall.

For instance, when Carrie Fisher died her mom, Debbie Reynolds, while making her funeral arrangements the next day had a heart attack and died her self. It’s a lost that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, if that’s a thing?

I went to Ludlow castle 2 years ago. It was amazing to behold. As is the town of Ludlow to be honest. I'm from Herefordshire so I find all of this fascinating. I was reading the other day about how the city of Hereford was actually part of Wales and was invaded close to where I used to drink with my mates as a teenager. A place called "The Castle Green" 😅 that must have been terrifying to see that I can't even imagine!

Because Catherine was sick as well I think it was a contagion such as the sweating sickness. I think Ithere was an outbreak where they were at. It’s so sad that he died so young. The outbreak scenario is likely. Catherine's parents were releaved that she was swiftly moved from 'unhealthy place' (Ludlow) fallowing Arthur's death. But Ludlow at the time was fairly comfortable residence. No dump. Imo unhealthy place meant 'place where there was outbreak of disease'. Also Catherine was very sick even weeks after she was brought South, so there must have been reason why she was swiftly moved while still so sick. Outbreak could explain it. People were worried they would catch it and since you could catch Sweating Sickness more than once, perhaps they feared she'd catch it again.

There facts are almost always spot on, and when a mistake is made, she corrects and lets the audience know immediately where what and why in regards. Thank you, that was really interesting! I really loved tour footage of Ludlow Castle too! Do we know anything about his personality to know if he would have made a good king or not? How might have things been so vastly different had he not died when he did? Would life today have been better or worse than it turned out with his younger brother in charge of the country with his own interests driving everything? Arthur would have been coached from birth to rule, a strong marriage was planned for him to give him good, political ties however this was not considered for his brother. Without being controversial, it doesn't seem that far removed from our current royal situation really had anything unexpectedly happened to Charles at a young age. It would have defaulted to Andrew who may not have received anywhere near as much coaching for the position as his older brother. I suppose the difference is that it mattered a lot more back then than it does now. Wow history is fascinating for sure!

@ 5:46 you mention the “other candlesticks,” besides the silver ones. In Spanish, that word is still being used today and it means “brass,” an alloy of copper and zinc. This would make a lot of sense for the other candlesticks to be made from this metal. A R

Similar to the tomb of Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick in the Beauchamp Chantry of St Mary's Church, Warwick, the tomb of Prince Arthur was meant to have been highly coloured as a reflection of his status but sadly this was never carried out.

Just demonstrate that the current House of Windsor, which is always described as a ‘dysfunctional’ family are fairly tame compared to the powers (beheadings, assassinations, kidnaps & wars) wielded by previous Monarchs. As the presence of a hacking cough wasn’t described I’m not convinced it was TB or influenza/pneumonia. It also seemed to end with Arthur’s death, quite quickly. My vote is typhus.

“Censed” does not mean “sprinkled with incense” 14:59 . Rather, the smoke from burning incense (held in a brass censer) was passed around the body, with its sweet scent passing upwards to Heaven. And yes, we Catholics still burn incense in precisely the same way before funerals and during Masses on major holidays like Holy Thursday and Easter.

This is just off the top of my head so don't quote me on it, but I think it was a matter of decorum. You weren't supposed to imagine the death of the monarch and having them attend funerals would have made that extra challenging. I'm assuming it extended to their wives too. Also, having the top royals there would have been a distraction as everyone craned their necks to catch a glimpse (just like today really).

It sounds as if the young couple might both have been stricken by a virus which just happened to affect Arthur more severely. My doctor once told me that severe dehydration from loss of fluid, such as can happen with vomiting and diarrhea, could have potentially life-threatening effects on the kidneys, and then the other organs begin to shut down. The description sounds as if he was violently ill and I bet the efforts at treatment were worse than the disease. Despite the sadness of the event, it was extremely interesting to follow all the details of the funeral arrangements for the unfortunate young prince. I particularly appreciated your footage of Ludlow Castle and the church, the pictures of other points along the route to Worcester, and of the Cathedral itself.

Severe food poisoning dehydrated me so badly my brain was having "mini seizures" from lack of electrolytes. It will also cause your heart to "misfire", and as you mention effect other organs. Should've gone to the doctor sooner. I was 25 and fit but that was many years ago. :)

It was truly Sweating Sickness, the period treatment was more likely to kill him than to cure him. Because sweating sickness's symptoms point to severe dehydratation and overheating of organism even before sweating began and period treatment was to wrap person warmly and not give them any water.

Great research and information as allways. I was doing some building work at Buckfast Abby and got friendly with the Monk who Kept the bees there, was about 10 yrs ago. He told me, its probably nothing as we often talked history, That prince Arthur was going to change the Patron saint of England back to the original patron saint of England, St Edmond ????, and that he was buried with a Token of Edmond, just a thought and probably of no meaning ?.

Interesting in the description of Arthur’s elaborate send off, that Katherine is not mentioned. She may have been a daughter of Spain but all her prestige in England came from being Princess of Wales. It’s difficult to imagine what it was like for her, a newly widowed, foreign 15 year old woman, who presumably spoke little English. We know even worse was to come for this very young woman as Henry VII did not treat her well after this. Henry VIII must have been absolutely charmed by her that he married her once her ascended the throne.

Back then royal marriages where not determined by "being charmed or loved." Catherine of Aragon was chosen as a wife for Arthur when he was age 3. She was chosen to create an alliance between Spain and England against England's enemy, France. When Arthur died, the alliance between Spain and England against France was still extremely important so she was still the smart choice for England. Henry was lucky that she was so beautiful. Henry VIII and Catherine were very happy together until Catherine got too old to have children and didn't produce a male heir. Only then Henry VIII did everything he could to cast her out and eventually divorce her.

Katherine’s prestige was actually and factually above Arthur, since she was At the time, the House of Trastámara was the most prestigious in Europe,due to the rule of the Catholic Monarchs, so the alliance of Catherine and Arthur validated the House of Tudor in the eyes of European royalty and strengthened the Tudor claim to the English throne via Catherine of Aragon's ancestry. Also, she was the great granddaughter of Catherine of Lancaster, which tied her more solid to the English throne than Arthur.

He’s in a small chamber just off to the side of King John. You should have Patreon mailed me! I could have got you some pictures of the chamber and cathedral! 😀 It sounds like Henry 7th and his wife did genuinely love each other with how they comforted each other with the loss of Arthur. So many kings separated themselves from all, but he instantly made sure his wife knew so they could be together, and he came later when she needed him.

If it was indeed "sweating sickness" (assuming no evidence found of other, known, ailments), this information might finally tell us what that illness was/is. Also, can you elaborate on why Worcester Cathedral was chosen for the burial? I know he had been christened at Winchester Cathedral,, and had thought that might be a preferred burial site for him.

We have access to many many bodies of people who died of the sweat so his wouldn't be of any higher value than theirs. I don't see the royal family allowing his grave to be disturbed.
