This is a video of me restoring my fathers old bench vise.
It's Record No25 and I'm very pleased with the result.

A great restoration. If it were my Dad's, I would find it impossibly difficult to to sell - but maybe that's just me? Keep up the great work

Great to see you have not painted the letters over. So many projects ‘fall at the last fence’ due to that.

Beautiful restoration on a beautiful vise! I wish I had one of those! I'll have to make do with my Record #3 and Record #100 for now, I guess. :)

Lovely video thanks - I took my 114 apart to renovate and needed a reminder of how the QR works - I recall mine has the washer too. I think the original paint was Roundel Blue matt but yours looks great in semi gloss. I've no idea why people think they look better in bare metal sometimes. Nice job and well done

looks simply amazing. Vises with them funny cone threads are not very common at all but that is a VERY good thread profile for the application

As has been mentioned, a washer on the end of the screw should be there to stop the slide coming out past a certain point.

Yes. Big washer. Many workshops remove them too for easy maintenance. He does mention using a stop bolt on the slide, but the washer is much more beautiful solution

Not sure if it's factory. But mine has a washer on the end of the spindle before it goes into that bearing housing at the end of the slide. The washer will stop the vise from opening too far.

Thanks James I will look at that.

Correct, there's a washer (or should be) on the end of the lead screw to prevent the dynamic jaw coming out.

I suggest not being sentimental about tools, just take a picture of them. Tools always better used constantly

I can’t help being sentimental about using my father’s old vice but there’s nothing wrong with that. Certainly, tools are for using and, as an engineer myself, the old vice is still regularly used. It also gets plenty of TLC …oil👍
