In that case, I have 3 serious questions. How many universes have there been? Is there more than one universe at a time? And when the universe collapses into something the size of a golf ball, what is everything around it? This is what keeps me awake at night.
@@GeoffreyCroker Those are good questions. I'm not a cosmologist so I'm not sure about all the details. But here goes: 1: We can't know for sure. There is no proof that several universes have or have not existed before this one. But it's possible that there have been a (virtually) infinite number of them. Also, billions of universes may exist in the future after our galaxy has died. But the thing is... during the big bang not only the universe came into existence, also time itself started at that, ehm, time. So technically there is no "before this universe" or "after this universe". Regardless, the whole cycle may have repeated itself an unknown number of times. You and I may have existed in any number of galaxies until now. Perhaps in one or two of those I was the one making RU-vid videos and you were the couch potato watching them :P 2: Some people believe in the multiverse theory, where an unknown number of parallel universes exist simultaneously. That topic is almost philosophical instead of scientific. You can't disprove the existence of other galaxies so the theory cannot be falsified. There is even a theory that says that every quantum event sort of "generates" an entire new universe. Google "many-worlds interpretation" or MWI for more info. 3: After the collapse of the universe into something really small like a golf ball, an orange or maybe a singularity, there is NOTHING around it. Because technically there is no around it. Also, during the big bang, the universe did not expand into a vacuum or something like that, because that would imply that there was more than just the universe itself into which it could expand. It's a bit like the start of time. There is no before it because time itself did not exist before. During the initial phase of the big bang (the Planck Era), space and time had no actual meaning. Yes some of this stuff keeps me awake at night too, even though I know a tiny little bit about the theory behind it.

Hard Mode: Replicate all your grandfather's random tool strokes in the new copper jaws and shape them by hand so you don't remove any material from the No 1. Go on!

Just prior to watching your video I witnessed another ‘restorer’ butcher what was a lovely No 6 Record vise. Using what looked like wire wheels and dare I say it, grinding disks, he ‘flattened’ the exposed cast iron surfaces. Anyhow, it was a relief to come across your video - especially the part where you used the scraping machine to bring the exposed surfaces back to life. I’m here in search of ideas as I’ve just recently acquired a No 5 vise that requires some work. Thanks for your video. I’ve also saved it.
Nice work, as usual Mr Croker. I usually attempt to loosen the jaw screws before I dismantle the vice:. I close the jaws on a 5/16 hex screw driver bit from an impact driver. I normally have a 5/16 ring spanner (aka wrench) on the bit. The clamping force of the jaws helps prevent the flats camming out of the slot. As the screw turns, I gradually unscrew the handle. P.S. The current Irwin swivel base will fit the No.6 (& No.24QR), but the swivel locks aren't as elegant, functional and well designed as the original ones, offered around the 1960s.
I just bought a battered Number Zero for almost zero money. If I attached it to the front bumper of my car, it's rip the bumper off. That made me smile. Thanks Geoffrey, that was a great video!
Nice work Geoff and great to see what you've been messing around with. I found long ago, that mothers don't like a lot of things, like, leaving the 6' ladder out that the two year old can climb and fall off. I'm glad they bounce fairly well... and toes mend.
Never thought I'd laugh at vice restoration humor, but here I am! 😂 I just restored a NO 6 Irwin myself. I got it for free and was rusted so much I couldn't move the handle with a karate kick! I can certainly appreciate your attention to detail, very nice work!
First YT vid that actually cares about the slide bearing clearance in a vice, well done! All other "restorations" are simply clean and paint. Could have peaned the buttons on the end of the handle.
Another great video Geoff. Here in the UK I have just restored a pair of vices. A number 83, and a number 84. Both quick release. I used Paragon paint. The colour is known as Roundel Blue. I like the idea of copper jaws. Fortunately, the original fibre jaw attachments are still available.
Hi Geoffrey, great video. You have an excellent sense of humour. I AM sentimental... I have most of my Dad's tools (he's 80 and still going strong) and some of HIS Dad's (he died at 52 when I was six months old). I care for them because they're better made than a lot of stuff you can buy today, and because I would like my daughter to have them someday.

I am sure your daughter will adore them. I've inherited about 2.5 generations of tools and they are my most prized possessions.
Rhys, I agree... of all the tools in my garage, the ones from my Dad and Grandfather are the irreplaceable ones. At some point in the future the universe may well implode, but until then their history and care are in my keeping. Even the tool chest was made in a small town less than an hour from here, in a factory which has long since closed.
Nice video again! When u drill stuck bolt out most of times you dont need to drill beyond bolt head. Take big enough drill and drill bolt head out. Many times left over bolt stump is relatively easy to remove with pliers.

Apparently there are several shades of the original blue like Dawn used several shades of red. It’s actually called Roundel Blue but I couldn’t find it in Australia so I used Ford engine blue on my number 0 vice. A Record officianardo said it was a good match so I was happy with that. Personally I alway have a vice at each end of my bench. They don’t have to be the same size but I make sure the fixed jaw of each vice are in alignment with each other. This makes it easy to hold long pieces on the bench. Your six and three would work well for that. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
I just picked up some of that gun blue last weekend. I left a part that was rusty in some evaporust, and it ate the bluing lol, so I went and picked some of that gun blue up, works really great.
The impact driver would have had a better chance if you'd secured the vice in some way - so that it didn't move when the impact driver was struck. The initial impact of the hammer on the driver is the most important for releasing the stuck screw. By not restraining the movement of the vice, energy is wasted overcoming the inertia of the vice to get it moving, rather than turning the stuck screw. Looking forward to seeing the refreshed vices in future videos.
On my workbench I have two N°:6 vices on opposite ends to help me out - reason being, I only have daughters. Great and versatile. Bought the extra one at a pawn shop when my dad passed away. Really missed it when he wasn't there anymore to help. Whenever I work I still imagine its him helping me...
I've recently stumbled onto restoration videos in the last week and have been binge watching channels like @my_mechanics and @Mister Patina. The calming vibe of precision work on old tools with no dialogue or music is just totally relaxing. This is... nothing like those and I am all for it. Instantly subbed to this channel and will begin watching all the videos immediately.
Very nice work. If you don't care too much about keeping them completely original I'd suggest adding a rubber o-ring against each ball of the handle. That way when they drop from gravity they don't make a loud clank and peen the hole open slightly.
Nice work, they all turned up really good. If you are unsure or unhappy with No:6 colour, I suggest that you can sand out the paint on all the writings like No:6, Record and Made in England and go over them with white enamel paint. That may brake up somewhat dullness of dark blue and make it look bit more interesting.
I did my Record number 6 last week, oddly enough, when I tried to remove the jaws I had a few issues. Discretion being the better part of valour, I bailed, and worked with them in alone. The finish was high gloss 5002, detailing with a white paint pen. Looks smart
Some have made it to the end, maybe over 5000 have. I like that the you have come to the conclusion that the "universe" will implode as in it will all become a giant black hole :)... maybe the No 6 vise (vice) will hold the implosion in place :). Thanks for sharing another good project.

Come for the work, stay for the beats. It's awesome hearing a heavy electronic soundtrack where you'd usually hear some twangy guitars. Not that twangy guitars aren't enjoyable.
Satin finishes, be it in paint or clear have an additive in them to create the satin or flat appearance. The product must be very well stirred initially and continually stirred during application so it does not settle out.
@@GeoffreyCroker Glad to help. It is somewhat unintuitive to most that solvent-based paint typically* by default is glossy and to achieve other finishes requires an additive. (*there are occasional exceptions naturally, but by-and-large.) One would think it is the opposite, you add components to MAKE it shiny. For instance, some enamel automotive finishes might have a hardener added will slightly enhance the gloss. But this is due to how the hardener also -slightly- makes the paint level out more.
It's crazy how with a seemingly simple project, there can be all kinds of snags. This must have been a test of patience! The end results were great though.
Great vid loved t. The correct colour for all Record vices is Roundall Blue. And the best thing about those old vices is that they are Made in England and are very good quality. The same cannot be said for the Irwin one you have that was made in China.
the No0 would be most useful mounted on a post, that can be clamped into the bigger vises. Excellent for small parts that need to be rotated and tilted.
I'm having lustful thoughts over your No.6;), seeing your collet chuck on the lathe, reminded me, I need to pull my finger out, I got a couple of the Adjustable backplate kits from Hemingway, one for the 3 jaw, and one for an as yet, unpurchased ER40 collet chuck

You need one of the "shake and bake" drivers that Mustie1 uses. Screwdriver on an air hammer with a lever for a bit of directed torque. Much more controllable than the impact screwdriver.
Geoffrey, none of us actually own quality tools. We're all just curators until we can pass them off to another temporary keeper and hope they can say we took good care of them while in our possession. 😊
