We can’t get a sense of the isolation in the guitar mic if there aren’t any vocals happening at the same time. You should’ve picked a section with vocals in it.

Good video! Thank you. I noticed when you soloed the 2 tracks, the Mini K47 section there were no vocals being sung on that section, so can’t really hear the mic rejection of the vocal. The vocal mic demonstrated its rejection.

Thanks! I just donated free studio time for hurricane Harvey benefit and the singer songwriters are coming in next month. My goal is to make them an awesome demo! I have a TLM 103 and a pair of CS1000 I've had pretty good results from. One of them will be playing fiddle! I always do a line in recording just for back up along with the live recording. Sometimes if the line and recording is Deason I might blend a little bit of it in with the live to do up a little painting and stuff.

that's a great technique and I'll probably try that out but i feel like it ends up being pretty studio sounding instead of live. I would suggest, although who am I to do so?, putting a third mic just behind those to capture one shot and listen back to see if it's usable. That way with one mic you get the sense of being in the room and where you are in relation. With two mics that all disappears and seems like it may have been recorded separately anyways. Just my thoughts. Hilarious ending.
@HomeStudioCorner

It's not a bad suggestion. If it was an amazing-sounding room I would maybe try it.

This was great! Thanks Joe. What is your personal opinion on this mic setup (with two Roswells) as compared to using the two pencil microphones in XY configuration for capturing the guitar? BTW, thanks as always for all you do. Learning tons over here.
@HomeStudioCorner
@HomeStudioCorner 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching. I wouldn't use XY on the guitar in this scenario, because the vocal bleed would be on one side of the stereo spectrum, making the vocal feel off-center in the mix. For stuff like this, I use one mic per source.
@frodev728

Joe Gilder • Home Studio Corner what about with a M&S setup on the guitar? I’ve not tried that technique as I don’t have a fig-8 pattern mic but wouldn’t that allow you to angle your main mic down still, while the 8 pattern would still reject the vocals pretty well?

Hey, great video. Would this also work with a Small diaphragm condenser microphone on the guitar and a dynamic microphone for vocals? Or will there be too much bleed on the recording of the acoustic guitar? Thanks a lot for your response in advance!

Great input- thx for your knowledge. I've been trying to record with my TC Helicon Voice Live Acoustic box & my Tascam 2x2 interface. Unfortunately, I don't think its going to be possible because the way the TC Helicon works is it uses a pitch correction software that requires the voice and guitar to come through the pedal, I dont think I can use the guitar line in with a condenser mic. Of course I've been using just the Line In jack thru the pedal to my interface, but definitely not quality guitar pick up using my aftermarket internal pickup... Perhaps I'll try doing them seperate, or use a SM57 for vocals and see if I can use a condenser for the guitar pick up. Honestly, I feel the TC pedal is kinda shitty and not worth the $300 I paid, but don't know enough about audio mixing to play around without it. Thx for the vid!

Hi Joe, I was wondering whats your opinion on the Rode NT1-A vs the Mini K47? Seeing that there's only a $70 difference between the two. I own the Rode and love it. Hopefully SweetWater will start carrying the Roswell Mic line soon.
@HomeStudioCorner
@HomeStudioCorner 7 лет назад
It's been a few years since I used the NT1A, but I remember liking it. I'm not good at comparing mics, but the Mini K47 felt warmer than what I remember the NT1A feeling.
@RoswellProAudio
@RoswellProAudio 7 лет назад
Hi Geddy, regarding Sweetwater, please ask your rep to special order the Mini K47 for you. We'd be happy to work with them to get Roswell mics to you. Regarding the NT1-A, it's a nicely built mic with a very different sound than the Mini K47. I personally prefer the Mini K47 for the sources I record, but YMMV. Ultimately, you'd have to compare them yourself to see which works better for you, your clients, and your room. These two microphones sound different, and will favor different sources. See my RU-vid channel for many example/demo videos. In the recent Little Wing video, the Mini was used on drum OH, guitar cab, and bass cab, with great results. Raw stem tracks from that session can be downloaded from the Roswell website.

Why didn't you double the guitar tracks and pan them left and right to expand the soundstage and give room for the vocals to shine more in the center? Just curious about the reasoning for your choice.
@HomeStudioCorner
@HomeStudioCorner 5 дней назад
Because that wouldn’t be live. The whole point of this was to capture a live performance. Overdubs make it not a live performance but something else.
@GS-uk3ml
@GS-uk3ml 4 дня назад
@@HomeStudioCorner I don`t mean overdubs. I mean just duplicating the one guitar track and pan it right and left for more width. Or have two mics for the guitar and pan them left and right. I`m just curious why you didn't do that and chose to have everything in the center.
@HomeStudioCorner
@HomeStudioCorner 4 дня назад
Because that is a very common mistake that causes phase issues and ruins the mix. Watch this video for specifics: THIS IS NOT STEREO ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-od_YQs0mIqs.html

@@HomeStudioCorner You are not answering my question. I was considering buying your online courses but the way you reply to my messages is not very helpful. At 5 minutes and 20 seconds into this video one of the most knowledgable and experienced people in the business is demonstrating and teaching how to record an acoustic guitar with two mics like I told you about in my initial question. He specifically does this to widen the sound of the guitar and make the vocals shine in the center. Here’s the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qggDfSVkU0o.htmlsi=ACAmHcNSDvLoJ033 Graham Cochrane is also teaching this way of recording acoustic guitars in stereo for the same reason. So my question remains the same and unaswered. Why didn’t you record the guitar with two mics at the same time and pan left and right to widen the soundstage and leave room for the vocals to shine in the center?
@HomeStudioCorner
@HomeStudioCorner 5 часов назад
Sorry just seeing this. Maybe you typed it wrong, but in one of your comments you wrote: " I mean just duplicating the one guitar track and pan it right and left for more width." That's why I responded that way. To your question about why I didn't record with two mics on the guitar...mainly I didn't want to. Secondly, when you use two mics you end up picking up more vocal in one mic over the other, so the mix can sound lop-sided. Thirdly, one more mic means 50% more potential phase issues. But really the main answer is we wanted to keep it simple. A simple mono recording. Not saying it's wrong to use multiple mics. I just didn't feel the need that day, for the reasons listed above.

So I’ve tried this and the guitar mic has really good isolation - I can barely hear the vocals in that track at all when I solo the track. With the vocal mic I’m having trouble keeping the guitar sound out. Any tips? (I’m using two Rode NT1-As, the vocal one is upside down like you suggest and the guitar one is pointing down a bit, so the two mics are about 90 degrees off-axis relative to each other).
