Pointing a camera at a CRT TV is one thing, but recording computer monitors is a bit different. I've received lots of questions about this over the past decade, so here we are! These are my current tips and tricks for filming CRT monitors.

Hey, Clint! Professional sound recordist and sound designer here. I’ve never had any issue with the audio from your content, and seeing your approach to combating noise from your CRTs was refreshing. Often times I see (or hear, rather) content creators going too far in the way of audio post production, and I think you’ve found a great balance of getting as good a recording as possible, and then only doing what’s necessary to make the content great. Premiere Pro isn’t the most audio friendly (I assume Adobe is trying to get you to use Audition CC for serious audio work), so almost all of our content funnels through me and my audio-specific “toolbox.” All that to say, great work, and keep it up!

Same. I saw the parametric EQ and thought .. oooh, that's probably too wide to be used as a whine notch filter. But the audio always sounds fine in the end, and that's all that matters. I am impressed at how much trouble Clint goes to, to get good looking and sounding clips. You make it look easy, but you're really all up in the details, tweaking with finesse. 👍

Not that I'd ever recommend it, given that I always say to keep things lossless until the end, but lower quality transcodes (720p and lower iirc) won't have the 15khz whine, as the AAC audio at 96kbps and lower cuts those frequencies off automatically, so you COULD get super lazy about it and just use 96kbps, buuuut I'd rather people didn't.

I can hear 20 kHz, though it's not something that I'll notice unless I hear nothing else... I remember taking pictures of Classic Concentration back when I had a Polaroid camera (DON'T SHAKE THE DAMN PHOTOS!!!) and a Tandy 1000. I ruined them because of that damned moiré pattern and the half-opened window glinting in 1 PM partly cloudy sunlight, but I still wish I had them because dammit, I loved the T1000... @@LGR yes, spectral de-noice in iZotope pretty good. Also Waves have X and Z Noice. Also noice filters.
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 4 года назад
Viewing with a spectragraph helps, if that's an option. It's the colorful plot of time on the X axis and frequency on the Y. (Rather than a waveform view of amplitude on Y.) Whine would look like a straight (usually) brighter line across the top of the spectrum. You would see if there's anything there, and know by the intensity how much needs to be removed - or when you're done. I think it was Audition that used to have a tool where you could highlight and select a frequency region and apply edits (like amplitude) on just that selected region. Kinda surprised Premiere doesn't have that built in since they're both Adobe products.
@Akkordinator
@Akkordinator 4 года назад
@@nickwallette6201 This exactly! Clint, you can activate this spectral view by using shortcut shift+D in Audition. It's use is really dependent on the frequency resolution and amplitude range you choose. Frequency resolution can be changed with shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Up/Down, which you probably want to set pretty high, to see where the CRT noise is. Increasing it decreases the "brightness", which you can counter by increasing the amplitude range in Auditions settings under spectral view (you can also set the frequency res there, but it doesn't refresh the spectral view until you click OK, so the shortcut is the better way). Lastly you can scroll over the frequency scale to the right of the display to zoom in and maybe use a parametric EQ or notch filter to just filter out the frequency you need instead of a broad range with a graph eq. If you activate the preview you can see right away, if what you need is gone. Still your audio sounds perfectly fine to me and probably everyone else, so your usual editing is definitely more efficient :D (Sorry for strange/sloppy translations, I don't use the program in english, so I don't know the original terms it uses.)
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 4 года назад
Adobe Premiere Pro has a spectrum analyzer seperate from any audio effects and a spectrum analyzer in the Graphic Equalizer, so, if you know how to read the spectrum properly, you can get away with that perfectly well.

There's this fantastic Australian comedy from the 90's called Frontline (It went by Breaking News/Behind the Frontline in the US I believe). It's about a fictional current affair news program and it is filmed mostly in a real TV studio. A big problem though is that sometimes their can be a dozen or more CRT's in or around a shot at once and they never filtered out the CRT whine, it gets so bad that it makes your example sound like ASMR in comparison. Imagine a million crickets on a summers evening but instead one solid CRT hum. The intro theme is full of all sorts of early 90's computer and broadcast equipment goodness and ASMR though, definitely worth a watch if that sort of thing gets your socks wet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KAGD0vW6rR8.html

The local television station had 8 tube monitors (and since we are in the 50Hz region here, they sound just a little bit different) in the director's room with 4 being the preview monitors being synced together so they refreshed all at the same time (it was basically the input's being synchronized that we watched as to stop screen tearing upon a cut to a different camera by avoiding cutting into a different refresh moment, but ok). That was absolutely horrible, but the chief technician and a camera operator present there never heard it :P.

I'm always learning something new from your videos and I'm impressed by your vast amounts of knowledge. Love these videos, and the fact that you offer engaging, charming, fun reviews without resorting to swearing to keep one's attention. I've got nothing wise to contribute but I will say that I've seen that exact same parrot sticker you have on that monitor on a monitor at work -- how random. Thanks for all your hard work!

Clint always shows vintage technology, so it’s odd to see him hold a modern smart phone. I always just imagined him using a Nokia 5100.

Great advice mate! I remember when I got my PSX and started using CRTs again, fun times for me and not so much for my family ;) One thing that threw me off guard was the fact that my dad (he was 41 at the time) could still hear the sound that that CRT made! Then I learned that CRTs get louder with time, but slightly quieter when they warm up. Anyway, helpful video

Thanks for this! Very helpful. One question: I want to do an animation cel painting video where I am using a lightbox and as I live in the US it refreshes at 60 Hz. I noticed that shooting with 1/60th sec shutter speed @30fps seems to reduce the flickering more than 1/60th @ 24fps, but I really wanted to keep 24fps for more of a cinematic feel. Is there a reason why this is so? Could I perhaps record at 30fps and then convert to 24fps in post to join the rest of my footage sans lightbox at 24fps? I could try the polarizer idea too, I hadn't considered that. Thanks for showing a bit of how you tackle these issues, I really appreciate the effort you take in making your videos look and sound great in addition to the entertaining content and host :) I have a Panasonic FZ1000 camera, perhaps it has a synchro shutter feature as well because if the lightbox was truly 60 Hz it should go away completely. Maybe it's like 60.1 Hz and when I blow it up on my 65" TV downstairs especially I can clearly see it.

I don't think anyone actually liked Waterworld when it came out. What with the Mad-Max copy-paste plot and the bad writing.

Compression compromises the highest frequencies first, it might be very obvious in the raw footage but once the output file was done it might have been compressed away (remember low-kilobits MP3's and how hihats and cymbals used to sound like they were underwater? That's the compression scheme working on the high frequencies and due to the low sampling bandwith not being able to read the sound fully and as a result, making some sort of estimate). As for high frequencies in the human ear: they are the first ones to go as well when it comes to hearing damage, unfortunately.
@DevirothS
@DevirothS 4 года назад
@@Dutch3DMaster I've been searching around and trying out different uncompressed audios, but the most obvious way you can realize you can't hear high frequencies is to listen to an old fashioned TV - it always made some high noise, nowadays it's just silence for me
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 4 года назад
@@DevirothS I got what you were trying to say, don't get me wrong, I was just merely trying to point out something that might not be obvious to everyone. You were literally hearing the coils that were bending the electronbeam to hit the right spot on the screen.

The torture you must have been through to make this video and keep some of those crt annoyances untouched to show us. i feel bad for you man. (the flicker lines cause of refreshrates bother me a lot, i tried to get a through the lens video of the Index HMD for a friend (he didn't believe that the Index was so clear), so i recorded a through the lens of both hmd's, zooming in a bit to on both of them after a while of normal through the lens (you could see the difference already without zooming in, just 1080p 60 fps recording through my Samsung Galaxy A70) but the Index didn't wanna cooperate that nicely and show my the refresh flicker on the recording (both he Vive and Index HMD were on 90Hz).)

When you color correct your CRTs in post do you make it as accurate to how it looks to the eye as possible or do you intentionally make color corrections as good looking as possible?

That high pitched "whine" is never something I've really had an issue with for CRTs, but low quality LCDs can be really bad in this regard. I'm in my low-mid thirties now, and I still sometimes have to leave electronics stores that have TVs and computer monitors on display because of that noise, so I guess that's something that's worth keeping in mind
