This is a quick little demo I did of a vintage cassette recorder I got from Craigslist. It's a Sears Model 34201 Solid State "Dual Power" Shoebox style cassette recorder. It records in mono and sounds pretty cool.

Great video and concept. I'd love to hear it if you could mic up the kit with a kick mic, snare mic, and two overheads or room mics all plugged into a small 4-channel mixer and then feed the output of the mixer into the tape deck. Drums and tape = Audible Caramel : )

+sound11advice yeah, I thought about that too. It does have an aux in as well that I could use, mono of course ;)

When the CD format came out the CD'S were really high in price. Then stores started selling used CD'S. Companies had said the CD'S would go down in price since the players got cheaper. Never really did come down,then the digital downloads came about. Its really hard to find CD'S anymore in my area. When I buy cassettes,I get the weirdest looks like the sellers are relieved to get rid of them. Also they'll give me a feeling I'm crazy for buying them. Their loss. My gain.

+cretta wva haha, well you're not alone, there is a pretty big niche revival of cassettes happening on small labels all over the world, like my label anthillrecordings.com/ has a whole section of cassettes.

Get a tape head demagnetizer, then swab the heads with dedicated solution, or alcohol. Chances are, the high end will be much improved.
@demonicsweaters
@demonicsweaters 7 лет назад
I actually did all of that already, it didn't make too big of a difference. The weird thing about this recorder, is it's mono, but doesn't use the full tape to record. If you look at the record head, it only has one strip for recording on the left side of the head, essentially not making it mono, but L only. When you play it back on the unit itself, you can't tell, but if you put the tape into a stereo player, rather than having the recording on both L and R channels, it's only on L.

I doubt that I'm telling you anything you don't know, but as fer meself, I'm stunned to discover that cassette recorders are still in current production. I was in Walmart, and just to play a joke on myself, I looked for one in there. They, HAD some ! :O And altho I mainly use a DAW to record me and my friends' stupid music, I also still have my Yamaha cassette 4-track, and I use that sometimes. So, thx to hipsters who were born 8 months ago, it would seem that cassettes will be here for awhile. Now, I went into Staples trying to replace my portable CD player....I jam up at work...The guy almost LAUGHED at me. Those are basically not made anymore. And this is in a podunk small TX town that I'm from here, LOL. so how "uncool" must CD players be in "real" places, such as L.A. or something, sheesh.

I prefer the tape sound TBH! can you blend them with say 80% tape 20% camera just to get the treble boosted?
@demonicsweaters
@demonicsweaters 8 лет назад
+Robert T yeah, I think it sounds cool, just a bit muffled, which can be interesting too. I'm going to disassemble the whole thing though and clean it. The weird thing is it seems to have more presence when played back on the unit itself. So I may transfer directly from it rather than using my deck.

The trick to using an old cassette player as a drum mic; and, still having the cassette audio line up with your camera audio ...would be to use a cassette recorder that has Automatic Volume Leveling built in. Many of those old-school cassette recorders had these limiters built in and they compress the incoming audio in a really cool way. Now, you won't be getting the analog tape "sound", because in order to keep the cassette recorder audio lined up you will just be running a line from the cassette's headphone/external out into your computer. Not actually recording on the cassette. While this won't get you the benefit of analog tape; it will let you get some pretty incredible drum tones thru the Cassette Recorder's Audio Leveling feature. Think of it as a really retro audio compressor hooked up to a room mic. By the way, you are a fantastic drummer.

Just finished watching the drum to cassette recorder video. I got a recorder put away. Can't remember what brand though. No mike it has the small speaker ? ...on the corner of it. to record into. Bought at a yard sale for 3 bucks. Generally in my findings. Most people in my area don't care for cassette. I'm not kidding. I've bought factory cassettes with music for as low as 10 cents. Bought 2 black cases with 36 cassettes in one and about 20 in the other of various 80's music. For 8 bucks at a flea market. It'd be wild if it made a comeback. Its just me I think the CD format is about toast.

With the 57, it sounds really, really phat. Honestly could be quite useful for certain styles of music. Slow that beat down with the tape recorder (if it has it) and bam you've got a really really good hip hop beat. Or go boards of canada style

when you mix the 2 signals , analog and digital together it sounds nice to me, very garage, which i like, but i have a question.... how do you mix them toghether without latency, and without its sounding flangy. even when i have 2 similar drumtracks digital and mix m toghether i get a flangy sound. how do you do it? cheers from the Netherlands, europe
