Matt Starr is an incredible drummer and producer, and has recorded and toured with Mr. Big, Ace Frehley (KISS), Beautiful Creatures, members of Guns ‘N Roses, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, and more.
In addition to being an accomplished touring and recording musician, Matt has been teaching drumming and production for the last 20 years. He draws from real world experience to give you practical and useful direction for maximum growth and success!
The goal of every drummer and engineer should be to create recordings that sound as close to the final record as possible, and this course will show you how to do that!
In this course, Matt will explain his drum kit choice and his philosophy behind choosing the right components to create a huge drum sound: kick, snare, cymbals, toms, heads, and pedals. You will learn how to control the ring of your toms and snare, how to make your kit and tom sound cohesive, and how to keep your snare tuning consistent through longer recording sessions and live events.
You will also learn how to create a signature sound for your drums by learning special micing techniques. With these techniques, you will give your drums more character, attack, or you can alter the tones of your room mics.

I put the standard mic's to get my drum sound and then always some special mic's, for example my old phillips mic from the 70's in the middle of the drum-kit and then distort it super hard, this makes fun if the music fit's to it ! Also I love to put a Sm57 directly to the wall - like this you can simulate a PZM Mic and get some interesting sounds to thicken the drums up :)

Thanks so much for this, Warren and Matt! I've been a fan of Matt's for a few years now, from when he started playing with Mr. Big. Along with the more technical details of recording, editing, and mixing, it's very insightful to get a glimpse into his thought process behind building his parts for the song and making tweaks to what he's playing after listening back.

Matt - Thank you so much for this. Your playing at attitude are tasty and thoughtful. 2:09:00 - I couldn't possibly agree more. Being a great musician is maybe 25% musical abilities and the rest is just human decency. Gobs of appreciation for Warren, and the PLAP crew and customers for making this all possible. I'm a novice engineer/producer and really found this video helpful. I'm currently reviewing several tracks from a local artist to produce, engineer, and play drums on. I must say that the challenge before Matt with this "modern" style track is a big one. Especially the part "hey you" is a combination of Get Off My Cloud by the Stones and some cheerleading rant. Glad it is him trying to figure something out and not me. Overall, the insight into how drum parts are envisioned and the thought process that goes into it has really confirmed where I am on the right track, and pointed out the areas where I have gaps. Thanks for this.

I love Matt Starr's druming, this is fantastic material! I'm a studio drummer/operator who also records some great drummers and we all use Ludwigs. I will add that having a highly skilled, balanced sounding drummer like Matt makes the cake, and the tuning, mics, preamps and all that other stuff is just the icing on top. I'm still watching but here's great tom dampening tip that was passed on to me a drummer (Benedikt Stehle) here at the studio: we place a small amount of cotton batten (approx. 2.5 sq cm) inside the toms (also rack toms if necessary, but a smaller amount). The cotton batten basically vibrates on the inside of the tom on the bottom head. Since it bounces on the initial impact of the tom hit, it allows the tone to pass through but cuts down the sustain perfectly. HTH!

Love all your drum videos, thanks PLAP To get rid of cymbal bleed use a low pass filter right when the drummer hit them, then use commit and crossfade (this is just on the "tail" of the toms) . That way you get the attack and the sustain.
@uwebaganz5144
@uwebaganz5144 4 года назад
Great files thanks - and for me gate worked on the back kick mic, I only had to apply a filter on the side chain, and to enhance it, you can copy the kick track, shift it a bit back in time and use this as side chain (learned that from you to use copy to side chain) and you'll preserve the attack, the room mics I hardly compressed added a bit reverb and added It a bit to the mix, really had some fun with the files

I’ve been recording and mixing drums for 20 years. First of all to put it bluntly this guy gets it! I think one of the most import things he mentions is how he crushes the snare the same every time. I can not express how much this makes a difference!!! The snare is the most important drum in rock music!!!!! Save snare dynamics for jazz music lol. Hitting the snare hard with a rim shot gets a nice crack and it gets the shell to resonate and get great low mid tones. And if it’s played loudly you can use the ambient mics for more room tone without getting all cymbals :)

This man gets hired because he plays to support the song. As a drummer, that’s our job; that should be everyone’s job in a band actually. He’s got great ears, this was a joy. Also if i were a producer and had the choice of two drummers with great musicality groove and skill and one of them looked like Ming the Merciless i’d totally hire that guy. 😂

Thank you for this. So interesting. My takeaways were the thing about Bryan Adam’s drummer ‘implying the rhythm’ meaning even if you’re not playing very much the groove is still going, choice of snare is important and I must buy more crash cymbals.
