In 2017 many people are getting into the Audio Book Narration Profession. The requirements concerning the ACX, as well as other Audio Book distributors are both extensive as well as easy to accomplish if you can grasp the basic concepts of Audio Requirements.
Hello, my name is Dana and I have been recording the “Spoken Word” for 45 years. I have analyzed close to 10,000 Podcast files using the recommended standards set forth by the Audio Engineering Society, commonly referred to as the AES, to wit I am a Proud Member of.
I am an active Narrator with the ACX. I also teach Home Recording. I have taught thousands of people how to record professional audio concerning the “Spoken Word” commonly referred to as “Speech”. If you plan on joining any of these organizations or dive into recording, I invite you to check out my other videos as well as my website @ www.danatucker.com. You can also join our community at www.x32rack.com.

Thanks again. I couldn't play or record CD's from the computer in Edit but I put the CD's on my phone and Edit played and recorded them. I use a USB audio player app on my phone and connect it to an AUX on my X32

Something to keep in mind : "double MAIN LR processing during USB playback" if you record your MAIN LR post fader and you have some channel processing on your MAIN LR (ex : EQ, Dyn (Compressor)...) and then play back this recording (having routed the AUX 7-8 USB Return channels to the MAIN LR bus), it will go back through your MAIN LR processing (ex : EQ, Dyn (Compressor)...), which means you won't hear your MAIN LR recording raw but your MAIN LR recording going through the MAIN LR bus, so you hear the processing done twice. If you wanna hear the MAIN LR as it was recorded, you need to send it to a subgroup that is sent to a matrix and not sent to the MAIN LR. This subgroup can also be used to play back reference tracks without going through your MAIN LR bus and its processing. NB : you won't have this "double MAIN LR processing during USB playback" problem : - your MAIN LR has no processing in the first place (so no MAIN LR processing was recorded) - your MAIN LR has processing bypassed (turned off) when you record to USB (so recorded MAIN LR has no processing) - your MAIN LR has processing bypassed (turned off) when you play the recording back (so recorded MAIN LR is not going through a second pass of processing) - you choose a MAIN LR signal source PRE PROCESSING for your recorder (so recorded MAIN LR has no processing) EDIT : depending on how your scene and routing is set up, you might be able to hear your recorded MAIN LR mix without double MAIN LR processing, by - soloing the AUX 7-8 USB channels and listening through the monitor bus - sending the AUX 7-8 USB channels to a bus and listening to that bus directly, or outputting that bus to speakers or IEMs directly (because this way what you listen to isn't going through your MAIN LR)

You have pointed out some very specific information concerning the USB Recorder, THANKS! Most of the time I am just giving the mix to the group. You never know when they might want to book some studio time.

I tried recording band practice to the USB last night and when I listened back, only some tracks recorded and the vocals sounded like just the reverb got recorded. I can't figure out if it's a channel routing issue, or if I've clicked an output I shouldn't have or vise-versa. Still learning as fast as I can. Got a gig in less than a month with our new IEM system and am trying to get it squared away. Thanks for the vids, I've been going through 'em. *EDIT: I figured it out!!! I didn't have the MAIN L/R selected on each of the channels. The ones that came through, I did have them selected.

If you look under the recorder tab, you will find several options for recording. If you have the L/R Bus selected, then you must have every channel you want to record going through the mains. I am glad you figured that out!!

06:27 i guess you're talking about the USB light from the X32 front panel here right ?

Correct.

Dana, does the setting on Aux 7/8 USB channel have any effect on the record level? Does it need to be set at unity for recording or does it just control the playback level. Thanks
@DanaTucker1
@DanaTucker1 Год назад
No. You can have those faders pulled down to infinity and it will not effect the input signal. AFAIK, it carries the same signal path as if you were recording into your DAW. Input > Pre-Amp > USB Recorder. If you are not using the proper gain structure at the pre-amps, that will effect your input signal to the USB Recorder and that's why you have some trim control to make up for the low input signal.

A couple questions about USB Sticks. Is there a way to tell if the stick you are using is compatible? Should something come up on the main X32 Rack screen to let me know I have a valid formatted stick? Last night I tried to record our band and when I clicked on the record button - either on the recorder screen - or on the right side panel, the record light would flash once very quickly and then go right back off. Is this a sign I don't have a compatible stick - or am I doing something else wrong? If I set to Post Fader I am assuming I will get the L/R mix just as I have all the various levels set, correct? Thanks!

There is nothing on the mixer that tells you everything is correct, other then what you experienced. There are many thumb drives that will not work with the X/M32 Mixers but the ones I use, can be purchased just about anywhere. I use the 8 gig scandisk cruser. This is the thing, you want the highest read/write speed you can get. The only requirements is that it is formatted to Fat32. Once you setup your mixer to either 44.1 or 48, make sure that you NEVER switch back and forth between the two settings.

Hay Dan, I wondering If I have 4 wav track for playback, can I assign each track to sepperate out? Let say I want my guitar playback to Aux 1, Click track to multiple out for IEM on Aux 2, & Stereo keyboard playback to Aux 3 & 4? Or we can send 1 stereo wav only to stereo Aux?

You can't run separate tracks from the front USB recorder. It is only a L/R channel input. You would need to use a DAW to do what you are asking about.

How can I record LR and the Subs? Is the M/C option I need to select as source?
@DanaTucker1
@DanaTucker1 Год назад
I really have no idea. I assumed it would be included in the L/R input source but I don't use the USB recorder that often.

Maybe someone will know.. when I'm recording to the USB. Do I have to push the USB button to dismount the flash drive or can I dismount the flash drive once the rack is turned off?
@DanaTucker1
@DanaTucker1 Год назад
All you need to do is wait for the USB light to go out before unplugging your thumb drive. Once the light goes out, all the information has been transferred.

When i stop the recording, then i press record again, why it override my previous file and not create a new ones like XR16? Do I need to setup anything for my X32 rack? Same thing happens to my M32C. Hope you can help me.
@DanaTucker1

You need to set your clock up in the X32. You will find this setting in the setup screen of the X32.

WHat type files can it play from the USB? Is it only .wav type files?
@DanaTucker1
@DanaTucker1 2 года назад
Yes and they must be 16 bit and the same Hz your X32 is set to play at. In other words, if you have the X32 set to play at 44.1Hz then your way file must be recorded at 44.1. If you have the X32 set to 48Hz then the wav file must be rendered/recorded at 48Hz.

Hi, how can I record multitrack using x32 edit
@DanaTucker1
@DanaTucker1 11 месяцев назад
X32 Edit is simply a program that allows you to run the mixer. You need a DAW, (Digital Audio Workstation) to record the tracks to. You setup the Card Routing to match your input Routing and then that is what goes into your DAW, where it is then recorded onto your computer.
