"A broken collarbone is a common injury. The collarbone, also known as the clavicle, connects the shoulder blade to the breastbone. Common causes of a broken collarbone include falls, sports and traffic accidents. Infants sometimes break their collarbones while being born." - The Mayo Clinic - mayoclinic.org
Symptoms of a broken collarbone include:
* Pain that increases when moving the shoulder.
* Swelling, tenderness or bruising.
* Skin over the break might look like a tent when gently pinched.
* A bump on or near the shoulder.
* A grinding or crackling sound when moving the shoulder.
* Stiffness or not being able to move the shoulder.
There's also those injuries where there is no break of the clavicle, but similar to above, swelling, tenderness, or bruising. No matter the outcome, Clavicle / Collar Bone injuries are among the most common that affect cyclists, no matter your chosen genre.
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew talks about a recent crash injury, his history with broken clavicles and associated injuries, and recovery. JOM will document his recovery from start to full healing, more to come in Part Two. We sincerely hope you find this information helpful, but it in no way is indicative of professional medical treatment. What is working for JOM, may not work for you, consider consulting a medical professional with your treatment plan.

Been there done that .. twice. Once hit by a taxi at Olympic Park and the other one over the bars at Dungog on the gravel.(have no memory of it whatsoever) Plated for 12 months then removed. Does make you a bit more cautious.I was back on the bike in 4 weeks riding around an out door velodrome at Gosford with one arm. Take your time recovering

Broke mine 4 weeks ago. Had surgery for a plate. Tips that helped me: eat like 3000+ calories and 200-300% daily values worth of protein and calcium. Take like 3x recommended multivitamins with vitamin d. Stay off ibuprofen once bone is set in place, the inflammation is your body trying to push nutrients in. Icing helps cycle this. Button up shirts are easier.

Sorry to hear about your malady, solid tips there. Glad your surgery is working out. I am on the button up shirts, t-shirts are a total PITA at the moment.

Sorry to hear JOM, I had a close encounter with a gravel road and survived it with nothing more than (gravel) road rash. I now realize how lucky I was and wish you the speediest recovery and good feelings!

Bummer, sorry to hear. Hope you heal up soon JOM. You’re a clavicle injury veteran! I fractured my clavicle 3 years ago on a mtb ride crash. Had surgery, was riding again in 3 weeks. That’s what got me into gravel bike riding. Probably a common story.

You referenced one of your accidents was related to a dog getting tangled up in a group ride. I had that scenario happen when I was by myself. The dog took out my front wheel and put me in the hospital for 3 days with 4 broken ribs, broken pelvis and a severe concussion. No riding for 2.5 months really sucked.

Well I'm also on the mend! I detached my left bicep tendon and have been quite gimpy this last month. I also collect broken collar bones but I think you've got me beat! Well, at least you did it doing something and not slipping on a banana peel on your way to the refrigerator. Hope your sleep is as good as it can be! Cheers

I was sideswiped by an SUV on 5/20. Took my first ride today, about a mile or so around the neighborhood just to check out the repairs and see how the arm feels. I talked to a guy on Reddit who had to sleep upright for 10 weeks after his surgery, so I guess I got lucky.

Firstly, glad to hear you survived an encounter with a vehicle. Good luck with your recovery. I need to post an update video ASAP. I'm into about week seven at the moment, but I still have a lot of pain, particularly while sleeping.

I slept in a recliner when I fractured my clavicle. It may not be a good idea to ride outdoors for at least a couple more weeks. Riding on the trainer is okay. When I started riding again, I rode a mountain bike. The fork absorbs a lot of the shock. It helps to keep a non displaced fracture from becoming a displaced fracture. If that happens it’s another surgery.

JOM..mate..so bummed to hear this news. 25 miles home post crash? Definitely double tough. Been there myself, most recently in 2021 but with the added spice of two broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung. Slept in a recliner for the first 2 weeks. Hang in there and like you said, listen to your body and dont push too hard too fast. Hope you heal up quick!

Jom, sorry to hear. I've been riding/racing since mid 80's, broken 4 clavicles (2 each side), all with no surgery. I highly recommend the figure of 8 brace over the sling. On my first and most traumatic break I took a xray both with and without the brace and the alignment benefit was noticeable on film. I did the walking thing as well and benefitted from a tightly cinched daypack for support and posture. I too was noticeably tired while my body was busy repairing. I will take a clavicle break over a hip fracture, but rather do neither. My shoulders had some ligament tearing and are a bit looser than before, but otherwise function pretty well. "6 weeks" and don't fall again for a while. One of my fractures was 6 months after a previous one and it was emotionally devastating. Not to mention forces me to take 1 month off work as a chiropractor. Affordable real estate in the Palatka area, but how many months are intolerably hot and humid?? Speedy recovery and Nice Ti bike!
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 2 месяца назад
Thank you so much for your real-world insights! I've never messed about with the figure eight brace, but I will check into it. I am with you, clavicle over hip or load bearing anything. Palatka has some nice spots, but it isn't my bag... and well, the heat and humidity is present here in Gainesville too, but I have a goal that is getting closer... just three years before I am eligible to retire :)

I joined the broke left clavicle club back in February (first time in 57 years of ridding). My tip, don’t pan while shooting video on a fast descent with snow on the shoulders! My bike followed the direction of the pan, because I wasn’t paying attention. Pretty much back to normal now.
