Pinterest isnt lacking in diversity. What YOU choose to follow does. Not trying to sound rude, but you are shaming a platform that is one of the ones that I actually see myself. Mixed, tattooed, not your normal style. It is geared to what you keep choosing. It's all based off of your likes. So that's you babe❤

Well what you search for will be the same as if someone else searches for the same thing... so maybe when you search 'style inspo' it should be more diverse. I searched it and you get the same slim white girls. So don't blame Sierra.

this is like a perfect representation of "it's not fashion, it's being thin" that points out that people like these outfits because of the body that's wearing them, not being they're interesting or original. people don't want the outfit, they want the body.

I think.. And correct me if I’m wrong.. That if you’re pinning a bunch of skinny white girls on your Pinterest boards, you’re going to get more of that on your home feed. It’s curated to what you search and pin..
@rebeccathomasanderson8677

Trying again, in hopes this comment will not be deleted like my previous comments have. Pinterest "default" of images of thin, white women when you put in "fashion" is not driven by Pinterest, but by users. They are simply showing you the top result - driven by images that are most pinned and posted by users - until you curate your own experience though more specific searches And it's absolutely a problem that thin, white woman are seen as the default societal beauty standard and that's reflected in the most pinned and shared images on Pinterest, but that's not what Sierra is discussing in the intro. Additionally, in her explanation in the comments, she's mis-understanding why thin, white women are the first search results - it is NOT because Pinterest as an organization is promoting those images. Let's start a conversation about beauty standards, but blaming the Pinterest platform is misplaced and not accurate.

Algorithms are created by people with all their biases, therefore most social media algorithms are biased to show white and thin as the default. That is a problem

I think this video shows how Sierra still needs a lot of work in her self love . I mean when I look at Pinterest I’m not worry on the size or the color of the model, I’m looking for inspiration. It’s just like Sierra doesn’t have the same body type as me or skin color but I’m not worried about that cause I like her videos .

Pinterest as other social networks are based on an algorithm, it will keep on showing you what you actively search for. Also if plus size stores, models, influencers don’t upload their pins, it doesn’t means that Pinterest is doing something wrong. The content is generated by the users, so if you are a plus size influencer you should start adding pins that represent you, without making such a big fuzz about it. I could easily complain that there isn’t enough content on Pinterest in spanish or for latino audience because the majority of the users are from the USA but instead I just add the pins and contribute with the content that others like myself will search for. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So as an Opinion, from someone who works with feedback in my actual line of work: cool video concept, but the semi rant was unnecessary. In my opinion. No hate, just feedback.

To me is just useless to complain about the white skinny girl content that white skinny girls are creating for white skinny girls like themselves 😂. I also wonder if Sierra uploaded those pictures to Pinterest and contribute it to the content she wants to see in there. 🤗

Winter Wonder please pin point where was hate in my comment. Seriously. Where is the hate? Did I name called? Insulted her intelligence? The video could’ve been “I recreate this Pinterest outfits” because your experience on the app, my experience on the app, and her experience on the app are not universal. And by the way. I don’t need to force any diversity into my playlist and the content that I consume 🤗 where I live what you call diversity comes naturally when we respect each and everyone but that’s too much to ask for other countries.

Jenna Qasqas hi! Just wanted to pop in and clarify that I choose and order the clothes through the thredup website / app just like anyone else would. Thredup just pays me to do it, that’s the only difference. The way I sort when I’m shopping on there (whether for a sponsored video, a video where I need a specific item, or just trying to find something for myself) is by sorting by my size first, and clicking the boxes of my favorite brands that I’ve had success with on thredUP before (usually madewell, american eagle, free people, torrid, old navy, etc). Sometimes I will also sort by condition and just select “like new” and “new with tags” to narrow it down to the highest quality items. If I’m looking for a specific item (like I was with the brown pants) I uncheck the brands so it shows all brands, and then check the item (pants in this case) and check the color I’m looking for (beige in this case) then I go through the results from there. Hope that helps on your search!

I watch a lot of your videos with my 7 year old daughter. She loves your style and I feel like I can’t start early enough in teaching her to love herself and not fall into the trap of judging bodies-her own or anyone else’s. We are doing virtual school and during her “class” free time she was talking to her classmates and one of them made a comment about their body. These are second graders. My daughter responded with, “Be kind to your body. You are perfect the way you are.” I am so proud of her. Thank you for the positive message you put out in the world.

my issue with thread up videos is that they seem to inflate the ‘original prices’ cause atmosphere is a very very cheap clothing line from primark - there’s almost no chance of it costing 22 dollars! and also with threadup, you can’t talk about where you got the other clothes from, only the stuff they sent you.
@caitarix9955
@caitarix9955 4 года назад
I kind of get what point she is trying to prove, but my Pinterest is based off what I search. You can look up plus sized clothing inspo on Pinterest and find plenty, so I don't think it's fair to pretend that 'nothing on Pinterest represents me'. Also, I laughed OUT LOUD when she said she switched to Instagram instead of Pinterest to find something more suitable? Instagram? I would 1000x times rather be on Pinterest, than Insta, because atleast there I can search up something suitable that I will be comfortable in. All this to be said, not every fashion trend is meant for all bodies and that is ok. Not everything has to be made for every size and we just need to accept that as women. I have a large chest for example, so little bralettes will NEVER work for me, just like I'll never be comfortable wearing oversized sweaters because they don't do justice for my frame. This problem you're having isn't Pinterest's fault, it's yours. Your search history and pins probably reflect those of skinny white females, so that's what they're showing you.

@@caitarix9955 I hate when Plus size people make such a fuss about stores like brandy Melville, but when it comes to Torrid they make it seem like it's some savior. Now I'm not saying that thin people don't have places to shop at or whatever, but why bash someone when another store is doing the exact same thing just on the larger end of the scale. And Brandy Melville never claimed to be one size fits all. It's one size period. And I get it thin people have note places to shop than larger people, but don't be a hypocrite about you opinions. Either you agree that all stores should have inclusive sizing or you disagree. Don't just change your mind to make a point in an argument.

Beforehand, I just thought I had to lose weight and sizing up never crossed my mind. After binging your videos, I walked into American Eagle, tried on a pair of jeans in my new size, and I felt a huge weight off my back. I remember feeling happy that I was finally going to have jeans that fit properly and that sizing up is okay and normal. Yeah... I agree with the other comments. Pinterest gives you what you are interested in if you click on/pin/follow lots of plus size, poc etc posts, it will recommend that for you. If you click on/pin/follow white thin models that’s what it will recommend. I didn’t even know this fashion inspiration stuff was on Pinterest cause I only use mine for art and painting stuff, that’s how customized your feed is

You have to expand your search on Pinterest and include "curvy" or "plus size" in the bar. You should also pin from these searches and have your setting to where Pinterest feeds off of your pins. You will get much more of what your are looking for without having to actually search for it after a while. I love pinterest

Many people with eating disorders save thinspo they like to boards on Pinterest, but they'll title the board something like "Fashion Goals" instead of "Thinspo" so Pinterest won't take the board down for promoting anorexia. Plus, then if anyone they know in real life sees their board, they'll just think it's fashion inspiration and won't get suspicious. (I know this because I have an eating disorder.) So if you ever see a "fashion" board on Pinterest with exclusively super-skinny models, that might be what it is.

It's been on the table how nowadays "fashion" is just thin people wearing what ever clothes. The post went viral on twitter where someone was laughing at two women's outfits because they looked trifted or whatever, and someone went "imagine those clothes on thin people and you'd call it style inspiration" and it absolutely blew up. And I think it's a good reminder to all of us. Posts like that one with shorts and t-shirt isn't about the clothes but the way the clothes fit on thin body. It's gone so far we aren't even judging people by clothing anymore, which already is harmful, but at least migh show something about the person as a... you know, person. We immediately judge the person UNDER the clothes (creepy when you put it that way but actually it IS kinda creepy) and THEN decide if even the clothes are acceptable. Not even talking about aspects like personality. This video is important reminder and I hope more and more people start aknowledging this modern problem.

I’ve got to agree with most of the comments. I’ve never had an issue with getting my Pinterest to match what I’m looking for at that point in my life. I feel like maybe Sierra’s wasn’t because when she was using it last (as in before using it again for this video) what she was searching and saving didn’t match her body type and head space. She mentions in about the middle of the video that she used to use it for “thinspo” and so one (or a few) day or using versus years of using it isn’t going to immediately change her Pinterest algorithm. Apologies if this sounds bad, I could be wrong or maybe the algorithm sucked back a few years. No matter what Sierra looks super cute in all the outfits.

I think the issue Sierra was targeting is if you type outfits inspo. or fashion the default setting are white slender woman and that you have to customize it to go to your targeted feed. So the lack of representation is that why aren't people of colour and other body sizes default setting and that isn't a Pinterest issue to me but a society issue. Similarly with LGBTQ if you just type love or couple on Pinterest it goes to heterosexual sexy couples as default and not same sex , transgender or asexual, etc couples. This default setting isn't just on Pinterest or on every social media app (like Tik Tok- I know how many times I had to actively seek out people of color and LGBTQ to get that level of representation on my FYP) but exists in our society and that's the issue that needs to be tackled.

If you haven’t curated a feed, the algorithm will show you the most popular results pinned by other people on Pinterest based on your search term. So, more people are pinning photos of thin white woman as “outfit inspiration” than a different body type and diversity. The fault isn’t Pinterest’s - it’s just that more users are pinning those photos than others. Pinterest is not promoting anything, they are merely showing you the top results until they gather more data about you and the algorithm kicks in.

I use Pinterest for myself but also aesthetics of fictional characters, my algorithm doesn't know what to think of me, but it is pretty diverse. A lot of my outfits pins are Korean/Japanese fashions at the moment, so I see more Asian women than white women pins. For a while I had Indian wedding looks coming up because I wanted to see what Indian trends in formal makeup looked like for a sim I was making. Other times there are next to no fashion images, just crochet patterns and sims custom content. I did, however, have to search specific things for that to happen. I shouldn't have to curate diversity to see it.

Pintrest shows you (and emails suggested boards) based on the content you're searching for and engaging with. Tags are added by the users who upload the content. If you search plus size fashion, size 16 fashion, etc that is what you'll end up seeing in your feed/suggested boards. Complaining that Pinterest doesn't represent diverse body types/races/etc just means that isn't what you're searching for. It would be interesting to see you do a video where you actively search for and engage with the content you want to see more of and then check back in on your home feed and suggested boards to see how your activity influences the algorithm.

First of all, my Pinterest experience is very diverse. But, as I mention below, so are my searches. So part of the issue is what you choose to look at and for, and what you pin. I not only get pushed plus sized fashion, I get ads for plus sized clothing. But I have very specific fashion interests, very wide artistic interests (I use Pinterest mainly for reference images), and zero interest in trends. Second of all, what's on Pinterest is put there by users. Same goes for Instagram. Instagram has an unusually large black user percentage, while Pinterest has an unusually large white female user population. If you think it should be more diverse, encourage women like yourself to start going out and pinning more diverse content, and following the threads of the diverse images Pinterest does find. Sorry if that last bit came off snarky! I honestly didn't mean it to be. I just mean that a significant part of the issue is in the hands of it's main users, who are people like you. It is possible to teach the app to present diversity as a default, but it will take their average white female user deliberately and consciously not settling for a homogeneous feed. Oh, and I think you look great in these looks!
@SierraSchultzzie
@SierraSchultzzie 4 года назад
hey friends, in reading through the comments it’s clear that everyone’s Pinterest experience is different- some shared my struggle in the “one look” representation in the app, and some had the opposite experience with Pinterest feeds full of diversity! I’m glad that not everyone’s experience was as negative as mine, that’s great to here. To some, I’ve seen that my discussion of this topic came across as complaining or hating on the platform, and I do apologize for that as it was not my intention. I was aiming to start a conversation about why white/thin is the default from my experience using the app to research for this video. Yes, there are more diverse people on the app if you search with specific keywords, but my point here was that I was searching very broad fashion related terms on a new account with no search history, and it was almost entirely white and thin by default. As someone who frequently talks about inclusivity, I felt it was an important to talk about as part of my experience using Pinterest to find popular images for this video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I will continue to welcome respectful discourse and respect your opinions and experiences. 💕

Personally, I completely agree with Sierra. Sure Pinterest is algorithm-based, but in my opinion, there is still an unnecessary overabundance of the skinny white girl rhetoric (this is coming from a skinny white girl lol). I'm an artist and am constantly searching for diverse references for my work. In my experience finding good, dark-skinned references (or POC of larger body complexions) has been much more difficult and typically takes twice as long. I don't think it is right that we have to actively search for diversity and engage with it to make it a part of our Pinterest feed, it should ideally be presented as the default.

Defenetly she needs to do a bigger discussion about Pinterest and do like a experiment or something. I really love Sierra's content and bravo for speaking about her experience.

Daniela Villalobos Cascante she has stated that she used a new account. So why is thin, white the default?

If you haven’t curated a feed, the algorithm will show you the most popular results pinned by other people on Pinterest based on your search term. So, more people are pinning photos of thin white woman as “outfit inspiration” than a different body type and diversity. The fault isn’t Pinterest’s - it’s just that more users are pinning those photos than others. Pinterest is not promoting anything, they are merely showing you the top results until they gather more data about you and the algorithm kicks in.

I found a plus size in white shirt and denim shorts...a few actually. Maybe you should be posting your outfits on pinterest when you post them on Instagram.

I’m a thin white girl. I prefer Pinterest because it’s one of the few social medias that shows diversity and allows me to find diverse brands. Honestly, the Pinterest shown in this video looked like something I would’ve liked as middle schooler eight years ago. Perhaps you have stunted the growth of your board because you continue to click on white, skinny women?

Thank you for doing this Sierra!! More people should be embracing their size and diversity. I would definitely love more plus size and people of color showing their amazing outfits in Pinterest.
