We recreate the look and feel of shooting on an old Super 8mm film camera with this camera rig build that I call the faux Super 8 rig. I used the Fujifilm X-T4 for my setup, but really you can use any digital camera to fake the super 8mm film look. Most of super 8 look comes from the camera work itself and the editing to make it look grainy, distorted and vintage.

Awesome! Soooo nostalgic. I grew up watching my dad film stuff on Super-8 film cameras.... I currently use my a6000 as my every day camera, rigged with a 3X loupe and a Sony grip (SONY GP-VPT1 a must, to stabilize my shots and avoiding the start/stop recording bump). One thing I've noticed recording like that, is that people get so interested on what you are doing (they see you like a weird bug), that they rarely get upset on public spaces because you're portraying them. Even if they approach to tell you that they do not like to be photographed, if you remain looking thru your viewfinder they get discouraged to confront you because they realize you're pointing at something else. :) *And it is also 100% legal in here to portrait strangers in public spaces, but some people just don't know their legal "rights" very well.

Oh that’s legit!! I never saw my dad use super 8. The first cam I saw was some Sony digital cam that went on little tapes (still not sure what it was exactly) That’s a really cool setup you’re using. I just looked at that Sony grip again and realized that’s the modern super 8 grip with start and stop and a mini tripod, pretty cool! Also, that’s cool you’re using an eye loop, I still need to try shooting with one to see if I like the feel and usability of it. Haha strangers often hate being filmed and just end up staring me down!

@@chadwin Yes, that grip will change your life I got one and after two months of using it, I ordered 2 more for my other cameras. There is a cheaper version from Sony, but it is way too plasticky. Having the camera on three points of contact with your body (loupe and two hands) makes all the difference stabili-wise. And you can start/stop, zoom, and take photo without letting go of the grip. I get you, people are too sensitive about their public image. They should feel flattered!!! LOL Take care Chad!

Great video! Have your tried threading the strap through the gap and passing though itself to secure it to the handle? Would mean you don’t need the zip tie.

Interesting video! 'Just wondering if you remembered that a cartridge of Super 8 film held ony 2 and a half to 3 minutes worth of shooting time depending on your shooting rate? To get the full experience, one must run out of film in the cartridge just at the most important point in the action. On another note If you are interested, one can pickup used copies of "Super 8 Filmaker" magazine on Ebay. This periodical published in the 1970's catered to the serious Super 8 shooter.

Yeah, I did know that 8mm film had a limit of about 3 mins max, so I kept my final edit short (but I did cheat and film raw footage for longer than 3 mins!) I thought about setting a time limit for roll time, but that was just gonna be too difficult for me to stop rolling haha! That’s cool, I’ll have to check out some of those old super 8 magazines.

There's no film grain links in the description. You never added them.

okay, I'll take another look and see if i can add some! you can also search youtube for film grain, and there should be some you can just rip from there easily.

It is to shaky. Back then people with 8mm film cameras tried to hold camera as steady as possible and holding with TWO hands and looking thru the viewfinder which also adds support for stability. Usually they stopped walking and then from standing or kneeling position did the filming. Also contrast is to high . 8mm film projected on screen never had such deep blacks, clarity and resolution.

Interesting. I’ve seen some super 8 films that are crazy shaky and blurry, but maybe those were from absolute amateurs and home videos as opposed to professionals trying to actually hold their camera still and make it look good haha! I hate camera shake, so it was really hard for me to just let it happen, I think if I do it again, I’ll be more intentionally stable tho but still handheld only. Yeah, my color grade did have very deep blacks, whereas my in camera film simulation actually had very light muted shadows (maybe I should’ve kept that to be more accurate)

Well, with the 55mm helios lens it makes it like 80mm ff it’s very very hard to hold it steady.
