RECREATIONAL PILOT CERTIFICATE: Flying Lesson #18 - Steep Turns & Unusual Attitudes
So today, I'm back in the Jabiru 230 and flying out to the training area with the instructor to learn about steep turns and unusual attitude recovery techniques.
Steep turns are about precise flying - maintaining level flight at a high angle of bank. You also get to pull some G's which is pretty cool. Unusual attitudes on the other hand require quick thinking to recover from potentially dangerous situations.
Lets go flying ....
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:

Epic videos man. I am 3 lessons in and have been in the 160. I will be buying a plane and I am pretty sure it will be a J230. Great work

Another good video. One routine I teach when thinking about which runway to use and where to join...which side is active and which side is "dead". Always remember as a pilot you are always "Dead Right" LOL. When you visualise yourself on final on that runway, remember your are "Dead Right". The right side is always "dead" and therefore usable (but watch for conflicting traffic)...but of course it only applies to LH circuits. Then you need to switch sides.

Thanks Biggles! And thanks for the tip.... I like that one! I have my own little nmemonic that I use-handy for flying into unfamiliar airports - RDCD. R is for runway and that the first thing I do - from the windsock or other means identify runway in use. D is for direction of circuit left or right. C is for crosswind and to visualize the crosswind leg as this is where we will be joining the circuit most likely at an unfamiliar aerodrome. D is for dead-side. This is where we need to be to descend to circuit height and be able to join crosswind previously visualized.

I had done that many times xplane, so it was nice to do it in real life :)

Good to watch, as a student RA pilot myself. Only question I had was, I thought that those steep turns to avoid the oncoming aircraft, would have been to the right.

Why is that?

Romeo Juliet Whiskey I understood the rules of the air to say that both aircraft move to the right. With commercial aircraft where the ACAS is operating the system will tell one aircraft to climb and the other to descend.

@@alankroit Yeah....good pick up. Probably a good idea to practice these to the right :)

Romeo Juliet Whiskey Thanks. I was surprised that the instructor did the same. ☺

G'day RJW good videos are all about camera position and content, content great, guess you'll learn from the camera position. Key is some of the cockpit and instruments and all of the outside VFRworld, Gopro have the spot monitor system, works well for inside outside contrast. Flew Special VFR low level circuits today @YSCN with 3 Citabrias and a CT4 in the circuit plus a blow in from YSBK [LOL] when ATC called us all in as poor 'ol Gupta couldn't see us, even so checked the recording and still had a good result. Keep up the great work mate and look forward to seeing you up here in YSCN. Cheers wtrofoz.

Hey mate, thanks for your feedback. I was a bit dissapointed how this video turned out. The camera position is a little low (like to be at eye height), and I had spot metering ON which means outside is whiter than it should be...oh well! Mind you its hard to get good contrast with a dark panel and an overcast sky. Planning to start my tailwheel/aerobatics training up in Camden in the next couple of weeks with Curtis so I probably will see you up there! You have a video of that flight?
