Recuerdos de la Alhambra or Memories of the Alhambra is an iconic piece in the classical guitar repertoire. As a solo piece I rank it next to the Concierto de Aranjuez as one of the most recognisable and transcribed pieces for guitar. Written in 1896 by the great Francisco Tarrega it stands alone as the most popular piece ever written for guitar using the highly specialised 'tremolo' technique.
The tremelo technique involves the rapid repetition of a note sounded by any combination of right-hand fingers but usually thumb, annular, middle, index. The tremolo is used to give the impression or the illusion of sustain that is similar to that of a note being bowed by a violin.
Other tremolo patterns are as follows:
- p, i, m, a
- p, i, m, i
- p, i, a, m, i
From a technical standpoint the idea is to produce a rapid series of notes with an even and consistent tone in terms of both volume and duration.
Players considered to have the most legendary tremolo techniques include:
- David Russel
- Xuefei Yang
- Manitas de Plata

someone asked me recently can I play this knowing I play classical guitar , it hurt to say no ! , this happened with cavatina some year's ago as well so I went and learned that one ,recuerdos different animal though ,have to learn to play tremelo first ,but you are right Josh it is one of the most famous pieces ,you did lovely job here and inspired me again to get this one started somehow
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 5 лет назад
Hi Alan. All the best with Recuerdos. There's certainly a few challenges in there but you'll be able to overcome them especially if you can play Cavatina. Pepe Romero has a wonderful tremolo lesson here on YT. Well-worth checking out. All the best buddy :)

+joshua rogers thanks joshua, how would you rate the left hand for recuerdos ?is it really comparable with cavatina ?
@nbnguitar

Alan I believe it is. Chords held for several beats, a few extensions here and there. Although they're inherently different pieces the left hand chords pose similar difficulty.

You're welcome man. 3 hours...not too bad at all! Perhaps you just need to adjust the action on your current guitar to remove the fret buzz.

@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 5 лет назад
It sure is Josh. Scott Tennant has a great book called 'Pumping Nylon' (link in the description) that has an excellent section on improving tremolo and identifying issues.
@sergiodario58able
@sergiodario58able 4 года назад
@@nbnguitar Hi Josh Yea i watched all of Pumping Nylon video..Regarding the Tremolo, he really insists starting doing it slow Staccato way...And after say 10 bits of staccato add a burst of speed for a couple of bits, then go back on slow staccato..And then slightly increase the speed on the staccato and the speed of the Speed bursts. I thing it really helps that way. Regards. Sergio

Hi Josh I Should have known this would be in your Repertoire ...I've been (trying) to learn this piece...I read in Guitar Techniques magazine Tremelo practice-- try to emphasize the "Middle finger" to give a smoother more "even" sounding Tremelo...I think it helps...Also have good shaped fingernails...goes without saying. It's taken a few months to get a half decent tremelo happening (incremental metronome practice) I have the 1st half memorized...the tempo and trills are a bit tricky...I need to keep at it ...but I got side lined with "Hotel Calf solo" haha 5 STARS! --Van
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 7 лет назад
Haha yeah it's a classic. It's probably in every serious classical guitar player's repertoire. Tremolo is probably the most difficult technique of all on guitar. My biggest tip is to aim for even articulation just make the notes all sound the same for the same length of time - including the thumb. Got sidetracked aye....story of my life too Van haha
@van1976
@van1976 7 лет назад
I've made this mistake before...I such a "Dummy"..it's "TREMOLO"...DOH!

@jgrossma
@jgrossma 7 лет назад
Responding to 2:42 Mateo Carcassi used to do his tremolos P-I-M-I. I like to play the famous Carcassi Op.60 Etude 7 in Am that way. If you want to see a brilliant modern rendition using the PIMI right hand fingering for Recuerdos Del Alhambra, guitarist Ana Vidovic plays it that way. In fact, a video of her doing so is popping up right now in the "suggested videos" on the right. With regards to difficulty, that's subjective. I think PIMI gives a more consistent tone than PAMI, and that's why Vidovic likes it, but it is a little "busier". While I'm sure its possible to do PMIM, and maybe there is somone out there who does it that way, I'm not aware of anyone.
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 7 лет назад
Indeed I have seen Ana Vidovic playing Recuerdos with P i m i. At the end of the day I'm a firm believer in doing what works for you. Most of the greats had some kind of quirky technical thing that they'd do that would kind of fly in the face of what is considered to be a 'sound' and refined technique. We're all different and therefore sometimes we have to depart from the norms and just do what works even if it goes against or contradicts modern pedagogy.
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 7 лет назад
I think most "hardcore" classical guitarists know about Vidovic and her tremolo, though I'd assume many who are watching this video may not. For those who haven't seen her play this, its instructive. I agree with you 100%. At the end of the day, if a given technique lets you make the sound you want easily, and doesn't put you at risk for injury over time, its "good". If not, its "bad". There is invariably more than one "right" way any given passage can be executed, and some of this has to do with anatomy and just personal preference. EG, I like to lead with "m", you like to lead with "i". . .at the end of the day, the piece comes out the same and it makes no real difference.
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 7 лет назад
With respect to modern pedagogy, so far as I can tell that's mostly about general principles on position and playing that correlate with anatomy, are supposed to require least effort, produce good tone, and don't predispose to injury. Different instructors still perform and teach things a little differently, though I think the best ones all accept that when it comes down to things like specific instrument position or some of the fine details of specific movements, those things are idiosyncratic and every player still has to figure out what works best for them personally.
@nbnguitar

Hi Joshua. I found several positions you use very different from what we see a lot of classical guitar players doing (and consenquetly from what is written in the scores found elsewhere). Is it something that you've came up to? Regards.
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 лет назад
Hi Waltriani. Yeah, I do plenty of things my own way. The older I've become the more I realise that a lot of the greatest players play things however they like. I just uploaded Capricho Arabe and you should check out the differences between the way Jason Vieaux plays it compared to Marcin Dylla. They're obviously both phenomenal yet they play it in their own unique ways.

BTW, I like how you rest your chin on the upper bout of the guitar! Segovia would probably have given you a dirty look for that, but no less a guitarist than Sabicas used to do that too, and if it was good enough for him, its good enough for me!
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 7 лет назад
Segovia may have even scolded the great Paco de Lucia for sitting with the guitar on his right leg too! He may also have chastised the mighty Kazuhito Yamashita for moving the guitar all over the place. I'm of the opinion that if it's good enough for me it's good enough for me :)
