Recycled clothes DIY, Turn a skirt into zipper pouches!

This week I have a recycled clothes DIY and I am going to turn a skirt into zipper pouches. I am tackling my fear of zippers and I made some box corner pouces. These are a fun beginners sewing project that you can knock out in an afternoon. I loved this old skirt and I didn't want to part with it so I decided to cut it up and reuse the fabric and make something new from something old.

I too have a fear of zippers! Thank you for demonstrating that zippers are not as scary as we think! I might just try sewing something with a zipper 😉

Hi Catherine. Big thumbs up for tackling zippers. The extra panel, you can make yourself a tote bag to use for the market or for when you’re riding around on your bike. You can also use it to upholster a chair or a pinboard or frame (a decorative piece your house). Jess ☺️

I think you are amazing. You should have your own show. I love seeing what you are doing. I live in Toronto Canada....we have a beautiful vintage store here that sells old Tulle prom dresses. About 10 years ago I bought some on sale day and must daughter and I trimmed off the top and gathered the skirts and sewed them. A little lining and then sewed a rod pocket hem and hung them in her window. I stuffed the back with tissue paper to make them Fuller and billowy. They were really pretty and the soft colours we're too. I gave them to my friend a couple of years ago for her daughter. I also made a shower curtain from a gorgeous old tablecloth. You have a beautiful sense of colour and style and I love watching what you will make or do next. Bye for now. Catherine.

Both of my cats have made it their business to sit or sleep on my knitting projects. Oh those bags are brilliant. They'd make really cool gifts. I had a t-shirt that I converted into a bag when one of the straps got torn in the old washing machine we had. It was one of those tank style t-shirts, and it hangs off my computer chair. We don't throw away things that can get a second life here. Even old pillows and old pillow slips get reused. Both of our dogs have one each. As they weren't any good for us to sleep on anymore but our dogs think it's great.

Catherine, you did a fantastic job on your pouches. Zipper may be a little challenging but adding a small piece of fabric to each end will make them more professional. I watch on ‘you tube’, a lady from England who makes a lot of bags. Her name is Debbie Shore. Check her out. She is easy to follow and she has different ways of putting in a zip. I have been sewing most of my life. My Mom told me that I was 9years old when she taught me how to make my first simple dress. I have been sewing for almost 70 years. My husband just bought me a baby lock Aria for Christmas. I also have the baby lock Elizabeth. I spend a lot of time in my sewing room. I absolutely see a lot of wonderful sewing projects in your future. You are a natural. Ann from Va. USA 🇺🇸

I have recently awakened my dormant sewing and crafting skills, and this project was fantastic! Well done! Also, I stopped what I was doing after watching this video to watch The True Cost on Netflix. What an eye-opener! I'm heading into my closet to see what can be re-purposed, repaired, and renewed. Thank you for the inspiration! Oh, and by the way, there is no project I tackle - whether it's making a bed, paying the bills, or sewing a button - without feline involvement. It's kinda like a rule. ;-)

Hello again! Loved the little bags. I used to make my late husband, shoe bags for traveling. Just a basic draw string bag long enough and wide enough to fit a pair in with their soles together. His old plaid shirts where good for that. I've also hung onto a couple and when I'm ready I'll make Christmas stockings from them.
