Well df did a mistake they are testing xbox one x wireless instead of usb connected wireless controllers have input lag the xbox one is better in that regard than dualshock 4 Bluetooth but it is probably about 80ms, also they did vsync on pc it can be higher than consoles, consoles are better optimized vsync or adaptive vsync than windows, if you turn vsync off it will decrease input lag very serious and that’s the way to play on pc unless it is implemented really good like games as call of duty modern warfare its vsync implementation is the best I ever seen

Not necessarily. They want to do some neural network preemptive caching thing, which would eliminate network latency as in it would predict your input before you make it, and so that will happen as if it was a local machine.

If anything, games like this one that have all these animation built-in will kind of mask the effects of the added latency due to the network round-trip. Whereas the difference will be much more noticeable if playing something that is meant to feel much more immediate, like say Doom Eternal.

Try 10 seconds in heavy scripted story missions on PC, open world is fine, as soon as there is a load of peds spawning with music and companions shouting at you what to do the game starts getting latency in the seconds, up to 10 seconds at times..it's complete garbage that they don't give input high priority above everything else, Rockstar games suck for this reason, they make sublime stories and nice visuals, and then they fuck up with bad coding.

Seems like we have two completely different views on what latency is (for me it's about input latency). What you did in this video is show how much over-animated rdr2 is. Latency is how long it takes the game to register the input, so you should measure the time between your button press and the start of the animation, not the end. When the animation is playing it's normal that it takes the same time at 30, 60 or 120 fps, otherwise that would be a bug. Input latency should be inversely proportional to fps but animation time shouldn't be influence by it. In the video you said you were surprised by the little difference between 30 and 60 fps but it's perfectly normal and what I expected.

They said its 18ms on nu8000 game mode. Purpose of this video is to show fire action after movements. Action on screen starts after 18ms on nu8000. That's the tv limit. On monitors will be about 4-10ms. But the question here is the animation for completing the action.

@@jidenshaotoko of course it makes sense. That's why it is PC vs Xbox One X. Not PC with specific settings vs Xbox One X
@asmilex
@asmilex 4 года назад
@@dmitriibob that's not the point. For every test, the display latency is taking into account. But, to prove whether the high latency is due to animations or not, more scenarios should be tested. Moving the camera is one. It should involve no animations at all. If moving the camera takes significantly more frames on Xbox One X than on PC, but many less than shooting, it means we're taking any factor of realism out of the equation. Then, shooting would be laggy because it is in real life. But looking around not. That would provide a more in depth comparison, as well as a insight behind the engine/animations

One of my favourite experiments from the 2011 era was late capturing inputs a second time during the same frame, right before camera view matrix is uploaded, just to get any extra mouse inputs rendered to the screen in a first person shooter, combined with late frame re-projection and front buffer rendering (and threaded input polling for eliminating vsync delay) you could make a first person shooter demo that was just insanely low-latency and just incredibly responsive. Direct mouse device input makes a world of difference, also. Pretty much all of these techniques were left at the experimental stage (with things like front buffer rendering creeping in on Overwatch and threaded input polling appearing every now and then) but if someone wanted to make a freaking insanely responsive mouse-driven first person game then it would be very possible. High refresh, low response time displays are a cheaper and quicker win that applies to any game. Another interesting thought is using a PS/2 mouse instead of USB to take advantage of the PC's mouse IRQ and avoid the delays in USB, I remember reading an experiment on this and the conclusion was the gains were negligible. It's kind of a shame that GPUs no longer render by scan and now buffer multiple pages with their tiled architectures and scan that out, although there's a movement currently for GPU drivers to only buffer a single page.
@Xilefian
@Xilefian 4 года назад
The comments section names a few points where this video could have improved in methodology. Guaranteeing freesync and gsync would have help a lot with the vsync problem and using a digital, wired input method would have made some difference (although on PC we're at a point where wireless can now be faster than wired regarding some input methods!).
@knighty
@knighty 4 года назад
I can't say this for certain but I think a lot of games also now stick rendering on a separate thread which samples from game state that has to come from the previous frame which ends up adding another frame too. Combine this with various techniques that sample across frames (like TAA and various other post processing effects) so many games just have appalling amounts of input latency.
@jc_dogen
@jc_dogen 4 года назад
Recent CoDs have around 35-40ms at 60fps on console, which seems pretty good (not sure about the latest one though). Apparently they use a lot of tricks to get there too.
@Xilefian
@Xilefian 4 года назад
@@knighty rendering on a separate thread to game logic has been standard practice for many years now, all that does is move GPU business away from game logic (which these days is split over multiple threads, as is GPU command buffering - particularly with D3D12 and Vulkan). The behaviour isn't game state being sampled, it's more that the CPU and GPU related logics are decoupled into their own loops - this alone will still create a CPU/GPU bottleneck when one thread completes before the other, so it has pretty much no impact on input to photons latency beyond potentially reducing frame time and increasing frame rate.

You disable vsync, go into real fullscreen mode (if the game is not dx12, then being in borderless mode is not an issue as the game runs in flip mode) and then test it. Limit frames so that your gpu does not hit 100% as this raises the input delay with RTSS the fastest limiter with under 1ms response time. Blurbuster has a test somewhere. I'm suprised that som many people look forward to their testing. I literally close the video the moment I hear them talking about using vsync to limit frames. I knew it just like I was thinking... Because I can clearly see the input lag on the PS4 Pro when aiming vs shooting or doing actions are 2 very different things, there's just a bit of lag while aiming but much more when doing actions or shooting so I totally already knew the game was designed that way and I totally enjoy it with a controller, maybe it will kinda be strange with mouse and keyboard since I'm used to fast shooting FPS games on the PC, but with a controller I totally love the smooth animations\transitions...

I have restarted this game five times since it launched, each time convinced I was going to get into it. It’s exactly my type of game! Unfortunately, every time, I am reminded that it feels like I am playing Mashed Potatoes the video game, and have to quit. This finally has given me the understanding I could not put my finger on until now. Thanks 🙏.

I feel like this game in particular is hard to test the latency because of how it operates. There are times where doing things like shooting a gun will happen right as you pull the trigger. But there are also times where mashing the button to get off your horse could take 3-5 seconds depending on what animations are trying to end. Everything takes forever anyway, so latency feels like an afterthought in Red Dead.

As someone who has played and finished RDR2 on Xbox One (S version, which still looked incredible considering the hardware limitations) a while ago, I can assure people that you will get used to the animation lag the longer you play. I remember my first couple hours of RDR2 and I damn near thought it was unplayable; the controls felt so unresponsive and sluggish, but a lot of that is due to just how "weighty" your character animations are, modelled with real-time gravity and momentum. This is a huge departure from games like COD and BF. It takes a while but you WILL get used to it, and when you do, you'll actually learn to appreciate and understand how the controls and animations fit into the theme of this *masterpiece* of a game that is, admittedly, a bit of an acquired taste until you get a few hours into it, and then it just gets better and better.

wow... thanks guys! I was yelling at my screen saying things like, "Why does it take a half a second to F****** Shoot!!?!??!". And this shows that it literally takes 453 ms (just shy of 1/2 second) to shoot. I thought I was going crazy. I actually stopped playing the game due to this, but now I may try some things with graphics settings and tweaks to play the game in first person mode whenever possible. Side note: I'm reinstalling the game at the moment, but isn't there an ADS button that would allow faster speeds due to no animation? or maybe different guns that have less animations? I could maybe use those guns if so...

I know this is a very old video but I would like to leave a comment on lag on Xbox One X. Yesterday I found out that with 4K enabled, all titles has some animation lag. Not as bad as as RDR2 but definitely there is a latency in both 30&60 FPS. I found some amateur RU-viders who discussed this, but it weird that here for instance never brought up. It’s definitely not my setup as I am still on 4K thanks to TM scaler, this lag is definitely is from the One X and it’s all gone if 4K is disabled. I just wanted everyone to know this.

For this type of game I don't mind the latency. The animations are fairly big part in setting the overal feel of the game. It's meant to be slower paced. I've been playing PC @ 60FPS with a controller. With mouse/keyboard it may feel like more of a problem I think. The on-rails quest/mission design is much more problematic...!
