Red Dead Redemption 2 Trailers vs Retail Xbox One X Graphics Comparison

Some of you've been waiting for this comparison so without further ado let's take a look on how the game evolved since 2017.
I've took scenes from almost all trailers and compared them with the scenes from retail version of the game running on Xbox One X at 1080p display.
Please note that it was impossible to match all scenes 100% since the game has dynamic weather system implemented. However some scenes has predefined conditions like train robbery (ndusk/night), bar fight (rain), etc.
ther than that most of the scenes shown here are as most accurate as possible.
So what do you think, was it downgraded or not?

Unless gta 6 comes out on next gen consoles ps5/xbox (???), rdr2 will still probably look better because gta games normally has a bigger map gta has to render more npcs, buildings, cars,also it has a faster gameplay which means they have to cut corners for gta because it will likely require more processing power. Its like red dead redemption and gta v last gen where rdr 1 looked better than gta v.

I think Bully 2 shouldn’t surpass RDR2 in graphics it would take a little long. Plus Bully isn’t as big as GTA and RD, but it should still improve and add from the first game.

It's not really intentional, this is just how Rockstar have always developed their games. There was a delay or two after the first trailer was released so they had plenty of time to otimise and change things.

@@fimostudios7176 that's about it though... Gta 4 online was shit, modders everywhere. Gta5 has a ton more stuff to do like - mod cars, customize weapons, better jobs, heists etc. And the different areas like the mountains for eg are good enough.

@@drunkbrian6637 there were relative reasons to why gta4 didn't have car mods and it all tied into the personality of niko bellic, I can't remember who confirmed it but i think rockstar said that it wouldn't make sense for him to go about in fancy done up sports cars because he didn't have the hype like Brucie did hence the reason he was where you did races and for planes the map was too small for them to even add them in, as for tbogt and tlad they were more of expansions so they wouldn't have really added much more game changing things.

Exactly, that's what I thought. For example, in my game, in the saloon fight when the big guy throw me through the window, the light and the look was more like the trailer, not the retail 2018. And, 3:16 and 3:18, not only a different time of day but different moments in the story.

Probably the 1st game I noticed to do this, but I also noticed that they kinda over did it; my fingers were sometimes glowing red from an angle when I was playing Dominoes in the game.

Hard to clearly compare as the lightning and time of the day is not the same along with clothing NPC's wear. However the scene at 5:00 clearly demonstrate that the retail version is actually superior then the 2017 trailer. Once again Rockstar did an astonished job. By far the most beautiful game and living world to explore.

@@Ne0ne It's called Subsurface Scattering, and started to become a standard graphical feature with 2012's Far Cry 3. RDR2 actually has a really crude implementation, though, with the cartilage mask having next to zero blending.

Game devs usually make their trailers look better to make the game more appealing so that more people will buy it when it comes out. Whether the retail looks better or not is all but opinion as it's very similar. The trailer appears to use better particle effects as seen with the train scene here 0:42.

the game has a dynamic weather, in addition the missions can be done at different times of the day, a trailer mission on a sunny afternoon can be done on a cloudy morning, for example.

5:00 Left: Cartoony Right: Real Life Amazing how good rockstar has become. Glad they have set a new cap to video game development for other companies to make better games. After playing the whole story and 28% away from 100% completion. I looked back at other games but they just look ugly. I've taken a bit out of many ordinary apples but rdr2 was the perfect one that spoiled the rest for me. So i'll be waiting for online.

I am just so confused as to how the actual game looks so much better than the trailer?? Like maybe I am just used to companies not displaying real game play footage and displaying seemingly-perfect graphics in the trailer only for the game to look like sh*t, but here it seems to be the opposite way around with the actual game looking a lot more realistic.

The difference that I really noticed is the color (temperature cmiw). If the trailer used reddish and warm color tone, the retail uses blueish and cold color tone. The rest feels like an update from the trailer

Scene between Trailer version and Retail is different graphics and models. Trailer Version was development Retail Version is improved graphics and model before game be released on date. Scenes looks different lighting and shades due to Day Night cycles and weathers when start missions .

@@Black-Re4per There is a difference between scripted demos and actual gameplay footage since of course you will polish an area if it's ready for showcase and remove some details to the area in the final product to make the world more consistent The downgrade of FC5 isn't nearly as bad as R6 or Watch Dogs and from the footage from what I had seen the difference between E3 and Retail isn't something you spot by playing the game normally. You have to see E3 and Retail footage side by side to see the difference and I haven't met someone that played FC5 and said "Holy shit it's downgraded and literally unplayable"

It’s weird because in some scenes the retail is better and in other scenes it’s better in the trailer. Honestly I think it has to do with the time of day and weather affects. This game has to be easily one of the best looking games around. I have a friend who has a couple thousand dollar pc and his games look amazing with the highest resolution possible. However when he pops in red dead redemption 2 on his PlayStation it also looks freakin amazing to perhaps even more so. And remember this is running on current-gen hardware. I honestly think rdr2 is such a good looking game that it can even compete with ultra high end pc games or even surpass them!!!!!!!!

Pretty sure that was a mistake with the most recent patch. They wouldn’t purposely remove something that’s going to make a game they spent millions of dollars and 8 years making look bad. I bet you enjoy ubicraps games don’t you

@@pchtommy1268 the graphical downgrade was to optimize the game for online play on the Xbox. It runs smooth now but looks like shit compared to the original release. Has nothing to do with PC version, as it didn't exist at the time.

The bluer color palettes in the cutscenes were definitely the right move because they make the game look way more cinematic.

Si se fijan bien, no hay downgrade, hay upgrade, tan solo comparen texturas y modelados, tienen una mejora en la versión final, también chequen la comparación del minuto 6:28, claramente se ve el upgrade en las texturas.

Los trailers fueron capturados en ps4 pro, y el retail es de Xbox One x, por eso se ve mejor

a big thing here guys to keep in mind is that in a lot of these cutscenes that were used in the trailers, I am assuming someone video captured from his xbox one x the same cutscenes, YET the time of day in game that he captured them, the appearance of his character, etc. are all different and can alter the way we perceive the quality. Yes, there are obviously evident changes in hardware and overall graphic quality that can be seen, but just keep that other stuff in mind.

Coming from someone who lives in Wyoming, The snowy parts they captured are spot on to how it is here. Early morning hunts, going through the snow. The game looks so real I can almost feel the crisp air. Its astonishing.

The first scene is better in the 2017 trailer, Arthur has best facial animations, and the illumination is change too, in the 2017 was more hot, instead in the retail we have a cold illumination.

Theres a few shots where the atmosphere feels more full, but thanks to the power of mods, you can bring all that glory back if your PC can handle that type of SSAO and very, very HD Volumetric Atmosphere. From my understanding you can even bring back the Trailer facial animations, which sometimes I thought they were a little more expressive.

It looks more refined in 2018. Also, time of day, is different,so you could see some differences there. ALSO, people who use TVs, always play this in game mode with a 0 colour temperature to get the best lighting as possible

En realidad, la diferencia está dada por el momento del día en que se hacen varias misiones. En el tráiler, muestran las misiones en los horarios donde se ve más vistoso el paisaje, generalmente en atardeceres. En mi caso la pelea tuvo lugar a la noche, y el brindis en el bar, también a la noche

The only major difference appears to be time of day (besides the train getting extra effects) which does look exactly like how it does in the trailer just not in those scenes.

Some people are saying that this is an unfair comparison... but I say so what, because I think the retail version actually looks BETTER then the 2017 trailer! It's not all bright and colorful like the trailer but darker, grittier and dirtier... giving it a gruff, tough and slightly more deaden'ed, look that frankly, is a much more honest representation of the time that the setting of this game takes place in. I think it's a considerable, improvement!

You’re also missing HDR, even if the trailer is 1080p or lower it was still captured in 4K with HDR before being converted. Also, at 1080p the textures look less detailed than the 4K textures.

The only thing that doesn't seems too real in the retail version it's the ear and nose lighting reaction to the sun when it shows the blood, like when you put a flashlight near your finger and you see all red. The skin on the ear and nose are not thick enough to show you that, you don't see the blood on the ears on people in the streets on a sunny day. That is the only thing, all of other reflections and light effects are spot on.
