I took a Winchester Model 94 AE 30-30 lever action deer hunting rifle and added a Primary Arms SLx MD-25 red dot and a XS Sights Model 94 Scout Mount with picatinny rail to setup the ultimate short range deer rifle for hunting on foot. In this test and review I use this setup for a series of drills to test accuracy from a rest and off hand, multiple target acquisition, and did a ballistics gel test.
Primary Arms SLx MD-25 red dot: www.avantlink....
XS Sights Model 94 Scout Mount: amzn.to/3WHxV2I
MidwayUSA Pro Series Rifle Cheek Rest: amzn.to/3ABvd7w
This test was done at a certified shooting range using all proper safety gear and protocols. I shot several groups, clay targets, and ballistics gel under controlled conditions testing this close-range deer hunting rifle combination. The 2 MOA red dot optic worked really well, as did the scope mount. #deerhunting #huntingrifle

I love my 30-30 but where I live center fire guns are mostly prohibited for deer hunting except straight wall cartridges. Still, I’m glad to see the old gal going strong.

You never know, laws could change. Sadly as hunter numbers go down, many older restrictions are slowly being loosened.

Same for my area but in IL its center fire only, at least .30, straight wall or bottle neck shorter that 1.4” so 300 blk is the only bottle neck worth mentioning.

I prefer my 47 year old Marlin 336 that my dad gave me. The flat receiver with the side eject is much better for scope mounting. Very few moving parts make removing the bolt easy for cleaning or bore sighting your scope. Remove one bolt, & you can remove your lever & slide out the entire bolt. It's a rock solid design. The Micro-Groove barrel gives my .308 Tikka 3 competition at 100 yards. The 336 is just a very solid performer that has features I prefer over the model 94. I'm glad that Ruger is doing a better job of carrying on the Marlin tradition. My older 336 doesn't have the extra push button safety, and I prefer that, too. If my house was on fire, & I could only save one gun, it would be my 336. It comes with memories that would be impossible to replace. I've always said, "if someone can't harvest a deer with a .30-30, they probably don't belong in the woods." I like the red dot option, but I would stick with a low power scope at my age. Most deer I have shot with that gun were @ power 2X or under. Thus, a red dot would surely get the job done, too.

Also, one chart I think you could have shared with the 30-30 is the felt recoil compared to the other calibers. I think people tend to overlook that, especially when shooting offhand.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 5 дней назад
It's a good point. It has drastically less felt recoil due to the lower velocity. Much less than other 30 caliber rifles, despite how light weight it is.

I have my grandfather's original 1894 Winchester with a Tang peep sight! fed his family with venison and Partridge an anything else that he could see he could shoot what's that rifle! He had hunt camp in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and lived in New Hampshire, rifle never let him down. You have a good woods rifle there 👍😎🤠.

🎉anybody that says the 30-30 is inadequate for deer hunting has officially drank the creedmoor kool aid....ivectakem deer cleanly with a 25-20, 25-35, and even 22hornet. Horsepower is no excuse for poor markmanship. Everything has its place as long as you, the rifle, and your situation are all in agreement. Smaller cartridges simply require closer ranges. Most deer hunters nationwide average a 36yard harvest. Nearly anything will work at that range. I havevyet to lose an animal due to shootinng a diminutive cartridge because i understand my limitations and ive done my homework at the range. Its dissapointing others find no value in actual rangetime and learning. Average guys deer rifle comes out of the safe 3 days before season, he takes three shots at a measured 100yards only, then says "good enough". What does it do closer in terms of point of aim/point of impact? What is the best bullet construction for your required ranges? Most dont know.

I had bought a little .44 tactical carbine rossi and the front sight was not tall enough. I could not adjust with the rear sights low enough to adjust for the high shooting. It already had a rail so the best thing I could do get a red dot for it too.

Great video George. I’m always one to recommend copper projectiles and Hornady makes a Leverevolution copper load that may be worth trying. Still hunting gives you many quick, reactionary shots where your best shot can straight at the shoulder of s hard quartering to deer and I’d rather not have a lead bullet turn that all into bloodshot waste.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 5 дней назад
So how does the copper bullet result in less bloodshot waste?
@Snailz5
@Snailz5 20 часов назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide Pretty well documented observation of how copper bullets perform. I'd guess it's because there isn't a bunch of small to microscopic shards of material spewing off the projectile into the surrounding tissues, but I'm not 100% on that. Even fragmenting copper bullets don't typically make much bloodshot. It can accumulate in the interstitial layers beween muscles, but I've shot square through several soulders where there's almost no meat loss beyond what the projectile itself removed.

Nice setup. I have a model 94 myself but a top eject though I use a screw on scope mount with a 3-9x40 but don't shoot over 100 yards. Though sometimes I've thought of just using a setup like this though not sure the mount would work on top eject as it's made for the angle eject.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 5 дней назад
Mounts are tricky for these guns. Took me more time to find this mount than anything else with the test. If you have a scope mount you could probably use it with another optic. Just read all the fine print lol

I've been kitting out my Marlin 336 with red dot as well, but it has a much easier mounting option directly on the receiver. It's definitely a 1 MOD rifle, but unfortunately, I need to get it down to a 1 MOC rifle. Those buggers are getting Wyllie.

You should really run the same test during the last half hour of the day when you can legally hunt. Rifle is fine, as good as any other for woods deer but low light will really show you the difference between a red dot and a low power 1x3, 4, 5, 6 or a fixed 4x. You won't realize how much you lose in low light until you experience it. Setup your target without the white background and compare. Don't even need to use the lever action.. Just my experience. Love your shotgun videos
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 5 дней назад
Well, I don't think I'll be hunting on foot in the woods during the last 30 minutes of legal shooting light. It's hard to see anything when you're walking and it's that dark. No optics are good in the dark under canopy. Your eyes don't work too good either lol.
@KHANPHOTO1
@KHANPHOTO1 4 дня назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide If you want to take more than one gun great, but I take one gun and the start of the hunt usually begins on stand in morning at first light, then still hunting during day and ends on stand at intersection till end of legal light. Not saying to shoot in dark but they lose so much during any low light situation at distance. I have used the same setup but 44mag and noticed the issue and now use 1x3x and just as fast. Keep up the videos. Best wishes.

I ordered one! Scheduled to deliver on Tuesday. Wish I would have done it sooner. I was on the fence about throwing all in to get a fancier shotgun but decided not to, wouldn't do as much to improve the channel as the shotkam. What settings do you recommend for ducks in flight?
@Windwalker_Outdoors

@TheNewHuntersGuide Awesome! You'll love it. It's also a great training tool. You'll see your mistakes, stopping swing, cheek not on stock (shooting high). There's an app you connect to to sight it in so the dot,cross hairs are exactly where you aim. There are different settings for different things....the one you want is flying birds. You can adjust playback speed so the video is slower or faster when you play it back..Shotkam has a series of videos on You Tube to help you set it up. Can't wait to see it on your channel. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

If shots are within 50 yards why not use a slug gun?
@TheNewHuntersGuide

The rifle had a much flatter trajectory which gives you more margin of error at various ranges. But if you already have a slug gun use it.
