Poor Juliet, though good for her for coming in for the interview for the extras, overall you wouldn’t know things weren’t working out as this is one of the best series
Indeed. She does seem to have taken it in her stride. Though to be fair who wouldn't want on their CV "directed 2 of Red Dwarf's finest episodes, in a very popular season/series of that show.."?
@tilasole3252 yes I feel sorry for her. But they might have been good episodes even without her direction. Either way, she seemed like a fish out of water, and I wonder if the existing team were a bit too 'cliquey', leaving her with little chance as an outsider joining the party late. And little things like not knowing what p.o.v means won't have helped her gain much respect as a director.
Having met Hattie in person, she's such a sweet person, Anyway series five is a psychologists dream. Incredibly well written and directed. One of the best.
This is the first series I watched. When we were kids, my brother and I saw it randomly at the video store and hired it on a whim. Turned out to be one of our favourite shows of all time.
The editing rlly makes the cast discussing 'the oil scene' hilarious, especially the jump from "made some heterosexuals feel a little interested" to "I would've shagged him"
Series 5 was the peak of Red dwarf. Some would argue series 6, some would say the original concept of 1 and 2 were the ultimate, some would argue that 3 and 4 were the best. I love all of them. Repeated viewings with friends of series 1 through 6 on VHS and I watched all with my brother when aired, lost interest after series 7.....
That was when the BBC cared about the show. With the three year hiatus between producing Series 6 and 7, the BBC management changed, and the BBC got bored with the show.
@@johnking5174 hahaha, the BBC NEVER cared about the show, they rejected it repeatedly when Rob and Doug shopped it there in the early 80s and only greenlit it because they'd gone and given a financial allocation to a series two of a 1985 comedy drama penned by Ben Elton called Happy Families starring French and Saunders and Adrian Edmondson which Ben never intended to do a second series of but was apparently routine for the BBC to do for shows at the time. It was because this didn't go to a second series they then tossed Rob and Doug those funds to go and film series one of Red Dwarf because they'd already allocated the budget, if they hadn't they would never have commissioned Red Dwarf and even then they relegated it to BBC Manchester. So that shows the care they had for the show from the outset. Everyone cares when the ratings come in yeah but they never inherently cared about the show and once the ratings died they quickly passed it off to Dave.
Feel a bit bad for the director, although not knowing what POV means (which every teenage boy knows nowadays lol) and probably a loyalty to Ed Bye didn't help her. Still loved series 5 though some of my favourite episodes.
Yes, especially since she did such a great job and for many, her episodes are some of the best. Reminds me of Diana Mulder as Dr Kathrine Pulaski in Star Trek The Next Generation. She was cast to replace Dr Beverly Crusher and the cast who had worked with Gates McFadden from the very beginning were giving the new girl the cold shoulder. She did a wonderful job and wish she would return at least as a guest star in the future. She did mention that the TV series was difficult though and she was not used to the rigors of acting in that context, but also the clique was against her. And fans complained she was too critical of Data, but that was the writers, not her. But she also had some of the best character development of the entire show and she was only there for a single season. 😅
I get the feeling there was a cliquey attitude on the set by this time, and they probably didn't give Juliet the time or respect they should have because she wasn't "one of the boys"
It wasn't just that. Her inexperience was evident. She didn't know what POV means in direction. When Craig saw that, and any actor, they would become concerned when a director doesn't even known the basics of directing terms.
There's very few of these types of extras worth watching, but these are always worth the cost of the disc alone. You have to LOL hard when Craig says 'we got a load more cash!!!' immediately followed by Doug 'actually, nope'. Bet you don't get interaction like this on the "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps" DVD extras...!
Series 5 is my favourite series, and I'll give some of the credit to Juliet May when she didn't have to worry about the effects. Though her inexperience with said effects and her not knowing what POV meant despite being the director were marks against her sadly. (Though TBF, the former made me wonder why they brought her on in the first place, or not hire a visual effects supervisor as Doug admitted they should have)
series 5 great series, back to reality was my favorite episode great premise and years ahead of its time as the matrix wasn't released until a full seven years later
Ha, man... realising that this came out only 7 years before The Matrix was a bit of a shock... in my memory this came out ages ago while The Matrix just came out a few years back... funny how perception of time changes as you get older...
@@DodderingOldMan yeah I know, time speeds up as you get older for sure, when I was a kid a year was an eternity, now a year is gone in a flash, sometimes I wonder if it's just perception or is time actually speeding up as well, or maybe there is no time and its only our perception and we are all living in a simulation...the more I think about it the more likely it seems to be honest 😱
@eclectic_gamer It's all relative. When you're 4-years-old, one year is a quarter of your life so would of course feel like a significantly long time. Whereas to a middle-aged adult, 12 months will feel like it passes far more quickly.
Problem for the character Holly was there wasn't much for her to do. When Kryten arrived properly in Series 3, he took over a lot of the explanation lines from Holly. Also, since Holly couldn't move out of the TV monitor, there wasn't much action for the character.
Okay, so what really happened here with the director? Series 5 is one of my faves, but it sounds like it was a bit of a mess behind the scenes. Everyone is being very diplomatic but Doug clearly isn’t happy that she was on the job. Seems like Paul Jackson did a favour to someone who was maybe a bit too green (at the time) and they were just out of their depth
@@christheghostwriter Yeah. I would be willing to bet that there's a misunderstanding happening there. The way Craig tells it seems a bit off. I think it's possible that he was being a pain in the arse and she was just trying not to engage with him, and he's concluded she doesn't know what she's talking about. HOWEVER... this is pure speculation and probably wrong. But maybe not. Everything else notwithstanding, I find it really hard to believe that she didn't know what 'POV' meant.
Series 5 was the first series I owned on DVD so I've rewatched it the most despite eventually collecting them all so though it's not the best series it's the one I am fondest of though I'm astounded they could hire a director who didn't know the term POV. How did she get the job if she wasn't properly trained?
Does seem like jobs for boys, or gals. But she did direct some great and beloved episodes. Whilst learning her craft, it seems. Maybe that stuff has always gone on in the industry. But as craig says it may undermine your confidence a tad.
@@elfboy29 well yeah but it was Craig who was the problem at the time cos he was being an idiot and she didn't know how to control him, Craig was a nuisance many a time, it's possibly why Chris got sick of him, they were shooting television and he was forever arsing about which on a studio set costs money.
@@user-et6pj4db9s Do agree with you. If you don' t know this I' m giving you a treat. A genuine first time viiew of the show from some americans. They picked it ramdomely due to the writing strike. Craig was at the Haçienda who wouldn't be. Series 5 now. As genuine as it gets ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1lg5rGTOCXY.html
They've dragged the entire thing on too long, series 6 was as good as it got, seven is okay 8 gets too stupid and the rest has been recycling the same ideas ever since plus Craig and Chris are really looking old now and Craig has gained so much weight, they need to end it really but I don't think they realise they need to.
On the chicane scene Craig was steering the same way as they were leaning. 😂😂 Which would have been maybe, right for the driver. But the others should be thrown the opposite way. 🧐
She wasn't inexperienced in general, she'd actually been working as a director for a year longer than the guy she replaced, according to her IMDB page. The problem was that back in those days the BBC tended not to allow directors to cross over between drama and comedy, and very few sitcoms had the level of effects that Red Dwarf did. They had the same problem with The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series - Douglas Adams wanted to bring in one of the directors he'd worked with on Doctor Who, but the BBC told him he couldn't do that, and it ended up being directed by someone whose other credits had mostly been on Last of the Summer Wine.
cast egos coming into play in this series as often happens in sitcoms after a number of series and it shows as the show went into decline from series 6 onwards and has never recovered, control and direction should not be the arena of the cast
Series 5 had a lot of issues. No Ed Bye directing. Juliet May coming in, and literally had no sci-fi experience or interest. She was also lacking in her basic directing skills. It was a tough series to make. The show was BBC 2 highest rated shows, pulling in millions of viewers. Their episodes sold a lot by BBC Video and it was now airing internationally to millions. So yes, ego would start to increase, but also annoyance at the lack of support the production was given.
Yeah I must admit I've never really bought the line that they ran out of ideas for Holly. Especially as they brought the male Holly back and suddenly he was in pretty much every scene in Series 8. This is just pure speculation, but I just get the feeling they didn't gel with Hattie. You notice when the doc talks about Hattie leaving, there isn't any contribution from anyone else saying what a shame it was or a mistake that she was going. They spent a lot more time talking about Norman leaving in the Series 2 Doc. I think it was unfair considering when Hattie was given something to do, like in 'White Hole', she was great!
