Things I like about the US remake: 1) they added a bit of extra world building and explained how Frankenstien got into the cargo hold 2) the fact that Lister gets another shot with Kochanski right before he's put into stasis - makes it a bit more tragic since it means he changed his mind about going through with it - although I'm in two minds about this since it also means he was gonna sell out an innocent cat to get laid which isn't particularly likeable 3) the fire exit sign joke Things I don't like about the US remake: 1) literally everything else Things I ESPECIALLY don't like about the US remake: 1) the fact Rimmer has barely any character development before the accident. We don't even see him in his exam. 2) Lister and Rimmer look too similar. Like you can tell them apart, but they're still basically two generic looking white guys. One of the underrated great things about the original show was how well it used hair, makeup and wardrobe to convey characters' personalities. You can see the differences in who Lister abd Rimmer are as people just based on what they wear. Prime example is the series 3 ep: bodyswap. You can tell it's Lister in Rimmer's body and visa versa just based ontheir clothes. If they did Body Swap in this version of the show, you wouldn't be able to tell who was who. 3) WHY change the theme song, and if you're gonna change the theme song WHY TF would you make it so bland?

Fun fact: That story about lister getting drunk and ending up on Mimas is canon. I don't think it's ever explained in the UK Show (and was much better explained in the book), but Lister went on a "Monopoly Board Pub Crawl" for his birthday, which is basically going around all the locations in a classic british london monopoly board order and then getting smashed at a bar on that space. Lister saw an ad for a cheap flight to space, and the next thing he remembers is waking up on a park bench in Mimas in a pink filly dress with a passport belonging to an "Emily Berkenstein" with 52 dollarpounds to his name. I kinda like that little inclusion in the US Pilot.

Am I the only one who thinks that, despite the fact this isn't a good episode by any means and not a patch on the UK version, this is still better than the majority of American sitcoms, and might have become a half decent show if it had evolved and developed?

But Kryton wasn't on the Red Dwarf at the beginning.

Apparently Craig Bierko (Dave Lister) was the original choice for the character of Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, but he turned it down. So, this was only his second worst career decision...

Craig Bierko is woefully miscast. Chris Eigeman is halfway there, but he's not nearly enough of a prat. Robert Llewellyn and Jane Leeves are both great. Hinton Battle does his best but Danny blows him away. There were a few jokes that landed but mostly this sucks because there's a ton of exposition they're trying to cram in there all at once.

The dialog reminds me of the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Strange to think that not long after this abomination, Jane Leeves went on to be a critical part of Frasier, one of the best sitcoms ever made.

Surprisingly, I didn't vomit once. A few funny bits. Nobody can replace Craig Charles or Danny John Jules and Chris Barrie. Proof that Robert Llewellyn is one of a kind is that they had to get Robert Llewellyn to play Kryten. Not as bad as I was led to believe, but still not as good as the real thing. All in all, it's just an oddity.

I actually think this is pretty good. It's all a bit rushed and plot heavy but otherwise I can't see much wrong with it.Acting and script are fine and Jane Leeves is great as Holly.

If this had been written well It could have been something. If they made it a stand alone Show, and not tried to make a direct copy of the British version it could have been ok. Like the American version of the Office. The reason it worked is because it was nothing like the original, it was a stand alone show, just the name of the show was all they had in common. If they had done that here, it might have worked

I can imagine the board meeting that created this: We need to remake the show for an American audience. Keep the same great jokes, but strip out the timing that makes them shine.

Really, REALLY glad this wasn't the true thing. Thank goodness this one flopped and they decided to enjoy the British version.

If people are wanting to know more, Rob "Kryten" Llewellyn wrote a book, and a big chunk of that is about his time setting up and filming this! The book's called "The man in the rubber mask"! Read it as a kid when the UK version was on Aussie TV, didn't SEE the pilot until RU-vid existed!

If this show had taken off, we would have had a completely different Daphne Moon on 'Fraiser' and I am not okay with that alternate universe.

While I'm glad this didn't get a full series I will say I found my self laughing more then I thought I would have. But then again, those were all the parts with Kryton and I believe that is his original (aside from the seasons 2 version) actor

Watching this pilot, it feels like the writer's couldn't decide if they wanted to do a comedy or a straight sci fi series.

I recommend Robert Llewellyn's book, The Man in the Rubber Mask, in which he discusses this. There's also a documentary about it, probably here on the youtubes.

After watching the documentary about how this was made and all the behind-scenes shenanigans, the actual show is exactly what I would have expected.

Why is Lister handsome? And clean, and tall?

This was mediocre, honestly, nowhere near as bad as everyone says, if it was it's own series and didn't have the original to live up to it might not have been a complete flop.

I was actually just reading Robert Llewellyns book "Man in the Rubber Mask" and in it, he talked about that mask. He said "It looked a lot worse, but was far more comfortable." I do see what he was talking about, it seemed a lot more wrinkly, like he was looking a lot older.

I used to think this remake was terrible.... but seeing it again 10 years later i have to admit its grown on me. Must be cos season 10 is so fucking terrible it actually makes this shitstained disgrace quite watchable!

I actually kind of like this odd version of 'Red Dwarf' (I know, I know, I'm in the minority here once again...what else is new?...;)...compared to the original, it is terrible, yes...but on it's own, it's cute and somewhat likable, I think... Plus, Kryten is always great, no matter what...

I was just searching for news on Red Dwarf XI and this thing showed up in recommendations... And I've watched every episode of Red Dwarf I can't even count how times but this is the first time I've even heard of the existence of this, and after watching I can understand how this has become the Voldemorte of TV shows.

6:36 First free time? What exactly were Kryten's duties in this US version before the crew got wiped out by the radiation leak? Seeing as he didn't join the Dwarfers in the UK show til Series 3 (after first being introduced in Series 2 as a guest character). Wonder had this US version been picked up for a series, they would've later come across another mechanoid on a crashed spaceship. Basically like the UK show eventually did in the Series 11 episode "Krysis" where they encounter Butler.

I don't understand why they do this stuff to good shows, why not just buy the original show and play it on american tv? Is TV in america 100% american versions only? In australia we play british shows, we play american shows, etc, we don't make really bad aussie versions of foreign shows that we bann. What is that about? Even Craig Bierko thought this was crap and casting him as Lister was a mistake. Although I have to admit, Red Dwarf USA is how I became a fan of Frasier. Jane Leeves played Holly before later going on to fame in Frasier as Daphne Moon. I later came across Frasier on TV and decided to give it a go. Some people have hinted that the Manchester accent that Jane uses in Frasier was obtained from Rob Grant & Doug Naylor. So, for me that is the only thing that I will give Red Dwarf USA credit for. Otherwise it was a total SMEG UP.

I lowkey think this is okay when it sticks to its own writing. The theme is like very reminiscent of a late night 80s Sci Fi show in North America, Lister is actually kind of funny. The second one had a better Cat and Rimmer tho. I hate this versions Rimmer. "I am such a loser, in a sick way its kind of impressive. I have absolutely nothing and I couldn't even hold on to that"
