Red Eared Sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) are the world's most common pet turtle. That sad fact is due to their ability to withstand subpar conditions and, most importantly, their ability to lay a very large number of eggs. This makes it easy to farm them, but doesn't make them a suitable pet for the vast majority of people that choose to keep them. There is a huge difference between the large ponds in Louisiana, where they are farmed, and the small aquariums around the world, where they live out their sad lives, which is most often the case.
